Just because they act like children

Not everyone was happy with my “Watering the Hippies” meme from last week.

So, I’d like to just point out a couple items before things get warmed up:

First of all, for those who haven’t been paying attention, this “sit and lock arms and refuse to be moved” tactic is exactly that: A Tactic. It has become SOP for the professional protesting left because it gets headlines. They either get pepper sprayed and complain about it or get separated by officers and complain about it. Think of it as martyrdom for socialists.

Other tactics include “getting arrested”.

If you watch the video, you’ll see that the organizers have lists of those who are supposed to be arrested at that particular protest. You’ll also be able to notice that just because the protesters are seen walking away with their hands behind their backs does not mean they have been handcuffed. They’ve just been trained to do that.

Secondly, this was a large group protest. You are seeing about 25% of the total number of protesters in the video all over the TV. The line is actually a circle. Around the building. These protesters are blocking public access to public property on a public walkway. The police attempted to separate the protesters by hand and epic failed at that. Too many protesters and not enough police. This particular group had a “leader”, and that leader agreed to let his group be pepper sprayed. See this video

He could have disbanded his protest or at least warned the group the spray was coming and that those who didn’t want to get sprayed should leave. Instead he gave the OK and everyone was left to fend for themselves.

Third, when used on a crowd, pepper spray is not a “weapon”, it is a compliance tool. It works like fucking WD40 for childish protest tactics. The effects wear off rather quickly. Watch the video and see some of the childish protesters less than an hour later.

You’d think that if they’d actually been in “excruciating” pain, they wouldn’t be smiling about it shortly afterwards. They can do that because the organizers have set up pepper spray washing stations nearby. Usually, just outside camera shot.

Fourth, THESE ARE NOT CHILDREN. For fucks sake, people. These are no more “children” or “kids” than the gangbangers the CDC and Brady Bunch use in their statistics. These are full grown, adult human beings. Capable of making their own decisions as to their actions.

While I do feel sorry that no one seems to have taught them that actions have consequences, that is not my goddam fault. Sometimes the consequence to acting like a child when you’re an adult is pepper spray. Get over it.

Fifth, While this was not explicitly a #OWS or Fleabagger protest, it was the same bunch from the FSA (Free Shit Army) that attends the #OWS camps. They want more government and, well, they got it.

There are already calls coming from the Fleabaggers to have CS, pepper spray and all other compliance tools banned from college campuses. Doesn’t that sound like a fun time!?! They are equating it with “torture”. Here we go again. You should have seen some of my waterboarding discussions. They usually ended about the time I gave them the number to a local private club where they could pay to have a very leatherclad person (male/female, their choice) waterboard them. For some reason they would huff and walk away. I’m going to check and see about pepper spray at the club. I doubt it would be a problem. I’ve seen the gas masks used for other things.

Now, a review: Just because they act like children does not mean they actually are children. No one was harmed by the use of pepper spray at this protest. They are only being given what they asked for. They will do this again in the hope that more people will fall for the fake media outrage. This is actually NOT the coming of “the police state”. If you believe that it is, you’re about 20 years too late. Welcome to the party. No, I’m actually not worried about being pepper sprayed by police when it comes my turn to protest for my “cause”. I’m not going to be protesting sitting down like a child who refuses to move.

Enjoy your day. Also, enjoy the meme.

Obsolescence

My 5-year-old nephew was happily pointing out all the different Legos in his collection when he frowned and said he didn’t know what this one was.

It’s not strictly a television antenna (I believe it’s from my brother’s old 1970s Moon Rover Astronaut Lego set), but, well, it looks like a TV antenna, I told him.

I received the blankest of blank looks.

You know, they mount on your roof? I said.

Nope.

Ladies and germs, I hold in my hand a symbolic miniature of the modern buggy whip.

(I tried sticking it atop a Lego airplane we built for flair, but he discarded it as both functionless and gauche. Sigh.)

Alaska’s Last Week

I found Alaska, our white wolf-white shepherd wolfdog, as a pound rescue in December 1999. He was six months old, and a few months earlier had been found abandoned on the side of the road, with a shattered elbow and hip.  The hospital staff came to love him so much during recovery that the doctor who’d saved him — pro bono — stationed a clandestine intern at the pound to prevent Alaska from being euthanized before they could sweep in and adopt him if no one else would. But it was doubtful he’d ever run without lots of careful rehab, so no one adopted him. I saw him in the local Davis newspaper, and very shortly took him home.

Another new liquid energy storage medium

Chemists in Oregon have come up with a new way to store hydrogen in liquid form at room temperature.  Easy to get it to absorb H2, easy to get it to let it go.  Just gotta work on the energy density (so no, you won’t be seeing this at the gas pumps anytime soon, it’s just cool, like Robbs find of the MIT Electro Goo).

Two from Balko

First up, a prosecutor in my home state of WI is taking things a little too far, as she tries to prosecute a 6 year old boy for playing Doctor with a 5 year old girl (an obvious case of an older man taking advantage of a younger woman).  First off, shame on this DA for trying to make her bones on the back of a 6 year old boy.  I know Grant County is not the hotbed of violent murders and suave criminals that you’ll find everyday in… well, not in WI, that’s for sure, but this is as manufactured a case as it gets.

And second, which adult in this whole mess called THE F*CKING POLICE OVER A GAME OF DOCTOR?!  Sh*t, I can’t tell you how often I played doctor when I was a little boy, and it was certainly a quid pro quo game.  We all got our curiosity satisfied, and no one got pregnant because, well, we were 6 years old!  Girls still had cooties, and the only reason the game was on was because curiosity got the better of cootie fear.  And yes, our parents knew.  I didn’t know they knew until the decided that telling me would result in the maximum amount of teenage embarrassment, but the knew, and recognized it as harmless, and now that I think about it, that’s about when mom gave me a copy of “Where Did I Come From?” and told me to read it, and come to her with questions.

Major responsible adult fail, here, and not just on the part of the prosecutor and the DA who signed off on it.

Next up, for us outdoorsy types, seems Iodine is now verboten because Meth heads use it to make Meth.  So your iodine tabs for killing bacteria in water while hiking?  Yep, those are now evil.  Good thing I have a healthy supply of them, and a medical grade water filter.

I am so tired of the fed.gov banning shit because it might be used for X.  I don’t care what X is, you need to have a really damn good reason to limit access to X.  And, as the Sudafed ban has shown, the drug makers will just crack out the organic chem and figure out another way to get there.

A good way to spend transportation tax money

Screw light rail, never gonna happen in the Puget Sound.  Gotta improve the highways, gotta improve the flow.

But how?  Money is tight, and there is little room to expand.

Never fret, I have a cheap solution that will relieve some traffic pressure!

See, I drive 30 miles to work every day, and then 30 miles home, all on the interstate.  One thing I have noticed is that the drivers I share the road with are a bunch of morbid freaks.  What I mean is, if I am in the southbound lanes, and there is a wreck that is blocking a lane or two, or even on the shoulder, of the southbound lanes; and there are cops and ambulances and tow trucks around, slowing down is a good idea, and I only curse the idiot who caused the accident.

But if that accident is in the northbound lanes, then there is only one reason for the southbound lanes to slow down, and that is because people want to look at all the blood!

See, morbid freaks.

My solution, however, is simple.  Visual barriers down the center of the highway.  SB drivers got no need to see the NB lanes, and vice versa, and if you can’t see the accident, and don’t know it’s there, you got no reason to slow down.

Seriously, every time I pass an accident on the other side of the highway, and the slow down disappears right there, I want to mount the .30-cal and open up.  Or maybe an EMP gun.
