Do not avert your eyes
It is brutal. Nor should it be kind, since it on the topic of Obama’s foreign policy debacles.

One does not simply backhand the US intelligence establishment without consequence
…unless you defect to, say, Russia. But Hillary can’t do that. Oh, would that the delightful piece quoted below prove to be prescient. I am sure that casual mishandling of classified data is rampant among the political elite in DC, but as with most casual legal transgressions, if they all have the nation’s best interests at heart (and I believe most of them think they do), then no harm, no foul, and they police themselves.
The problem with the Clintons has always been that they took the parallel attitude that prevails in business and law, and took advantage of it by brazenly pushing their transgressions all the way to the edge as a routine course of action. Obviously having her own server is an extension of that attitude, as you’ll see if you read the below link.
Where that fails is that if her team helped in any way to ensure a Petraeus is nailed (to get rid of what would have been Hillary’s most formidable competition for the presidency) — and for what I presume are fairly routine practices among the top, trusted folks — the intelligence community takes note, and not in a good way. Money quote (emphasis mine, and you will want to read the whole thing):
The media correctly saw the news as political trouble for Hillary, but they missed two other crucial elements of the story. Somebody high up in the intelligence community leaked that story. And Hillary faces far more than political trouble. She’s being fitted for an orange jumpsuit.

Never letting a crisis go to waste
So, I have a sister who likes to travel. Damn near every year she takes all of her vacation time, which is a considerable amount, and goes somewhere far, far away. The past couple of years it has been somewhere in the UK.
She has a friend who visits another friend who resides in the Champagne region of France every other year. On the other “every other year” this friend comes out to visit my sister’s friend here in Seattle.
This year is the year for going to France. Having met this French friend when she was out last year, my sister was invited to visit this year, and she accepted. She is visiting Versailles today.
A couple years back, before I was laid off and went away to learn welding, her and I had made plans for a grand European vacation. My sister has a romanticized ideal of Berlin, and would love to go, but not alone. I told her I’d sherpa her around Berlin and greater Deutschland, if we could spend an equal amount of time in Prague and maybe a few days in Budapest.
Well, I got laid off and had to go to college so as to be employable, and that plan was put away.
I had dinner with her the night before her flight to the land of the Francs, and she brought it up again, since I’m employed and she still really wants to go.
I agreed to our departure next September.
I knew of the “refugee crisis”. And of the hassle of getting a rental car anywhere east of Germany. And of having to get a new phone, since US phones don’t work “over there”. And that, not counting food, fuel and other daily costs, this trip is going to set me back $2500 before I even get to the airport. But I agreed anyway.
Trust me, I do want to go. Rather badly, actually. If only to see Prague and Budapest before they get swallowed into the caliphate (but I’d also like to visit the CZ factory in Brno, and leave some flowers for Vaclav Havel, and maybe urinate on some infamous communist’s graves, etc), but also because, if I don’t take her to her favorite historical monument, the remnants of the Berlin Wall, she’ll likely never see it.
So, any bets on whether Germany, the Czech Republic and/or Hungary will be touristable in a year’s time?
On a more realistic note, does anyone know if there is a “Security Personnel” certification I can take so I can go in heavy? My sister is a VIP (to me at least).

This might be a new record
Somebody needs some range time.
An attempted murder suspect who fired at New York police was apprehended only after police engaged him in a gun fight, firing a barrage of bullets.
Of the 84 total shots cops fired, one struck the suspect.
OK, a bunch of somebody’s need a lot of range time.
I’ll just save this link for the next yahoo who says that only the constabulary has the training needed to use a firearm effectively.

They must have had the glaucoma
I’m sure it’s cured by now though
Deer got the munchies at an industrial hemp crop in southern Oregon.
The deer got by barbed-wire fencing a couple weeks ago and went through the hemp plants like high-powered mowers, the Grants Pass Daily Courier reported.
“Generally, I don’t think they like cannabis. They liked ours, though,” said Cliff Thomason, a real estate agent who is the steward of the first industrial hemp crop in Oregon, which was planted near Murphy by Thomason and his partners with Orhempco.
The company planted roughly 1,000 plants in the section the deer got into, and Thomason said there are only about 40 left.
Industrial hemp has a low level of THC, the psychoactive property of marijuana. Kit Doyle, another partner in Orhemco, said it’s high in protein and that’s likely why the deer went on a binge.
Yeah, I’m sure that’s why.
It wasn’t because of the Dorito’s truck that was driving through town or nuthin’.
When you and your deer friends eat 950 some odd hemp plants, I don’t care how “low level” it is, you’re gonna want some Cool Ranch.

Wikileaks a Cut-Out for Russian Intelligence
I’ve run into a couple of DC-connected folks who are generally favorable to privacy rights, but when you bring up Snowden or Assange they growl and mutter something about “not what he seems.”

Ready for Battle
With a box.
The wife has been a subscriber to a service called “The BarkBox” for a year or so now, and she enjoys coming home to find them on the porch and then acting like Santa Claus to the pooches every month.
Monday, I came home to find a box on the dining room table with her name on it, but with a note for me to open it.
The Box had this logo printed on it,
so I was more than just a little bit excited.
When I opened it, I found a plethora of pretty cool stuff
1 – P38 can opener
1 – P51 can opener
1 – Signal Mirror
1 – Emergency Survival Blanket
1 – Gerber Fire Starter
1 – CKRT Eat ‘n’ Tool
1 – FM 21-76 Survival Manual
1 – Lensatic Compass
1 – 300 Lumen 3 LED mini flashlight
1 – Aquamira Frontier Emergency Water Filtration System
1 – Solar Cell Phone Charger
And because she went for the top of the line option,
1 – Kershaw Cryo II Blackwash
You can see the items in their video here
When she got home, I was quite open about how awesome this gift was, and then she told me that I’ll be getting one of these every month for at least the next year, AND that because she was able to collect some online coupons and other things, she’s getting them for over 50% off the normal subscription price.
I think I’ll keep her around.
The BattleBox website is here. Take a look around and if you know a prepper who could use a monthly pick-me-up, I recommend giving these guys a your business.

At least
They weren’t giving out participation awards.
If you haven’t yet read Rolf’s account of the Hugo Awards event at Sasquan, you should do so now.
Also, this post at The Stars Came Back site.

Aware of My Tongue
A delightful long-form review that somehow left me aware of the rapidly fading relevance of the memories of my generation. All the while I was grinning wildly and laughing at snark and old tech.
Can’t stop thinking about it, now.
