They Collect Everything

Y’all may not have seen this.

Recall, please, that the NewsHour is venerated in Washington as the sober Word of Truth among the elite. For very good reasons, frankly; bias aside, they’re still better than most at what they do.

So I’m just gonna accept what Tice and Binney say as potential gospel. The NewsHour may be a lot of things, but they don’t put cranks on the air.

RUSSELL TICE: This was in 2002-2003 time frame. The NSA were targeting individuals. In that case, they were judges like the Supreme Court. I held in my hand Judge Alito’s targeting information for his phones and his staff and his family.

First they find you guilty

Then they convict you.

U.S. directs agents to cover up program used to investigate Americans

A secretive U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration unit is funneling information from intelligence intercepts, wiretaps, informants and a massive database of telephone records to authorities across the nation to help them launch criminal investigations of Americans.

Although these cases rarely involve national security issues, documents reviewed by Reuters show that law enforcement agents have been directed to conceal how such investigations truly begin – not only from defense lawyers but also sometimes from prosecutors and judges.

The undated documents show that federal agents are trained to “recreate” the investigative trail to effectively cover up where the information originated, a practice that some experts say violates a defendant’s Constitutional right to a fair trial. If defendants don’t know how an investigation began, they cannot know to ask to review potential sources of exculpatory evidence – information that could reveal entrapment, mistakes or biased witnesses.

“I have never heard of anything like this at all,” said Nancy Gertner, a Harvard Law School professor who served as a federal judge from 1994 to 2011. Gertner and other legal experts said the program sounds more troubling than recent disclosures that the National Security Agency has been collecting domestic phone records. The NSA effort is geared toward stopping terrorists; the DEA program targets common criminals, primarily drug dealers.

“It is one thing to create special rules for national security,” Gertner said. “Ordinary crime is entirely different. It sounds like they are phonying up investigations.”

Equity, the New Buzzword

Straight from a San Francisco Bay Area leftist board’s retreat to you:

It’s not enough to be equal, you see: we must work to provide equity–through the coercive power of the government, of course.

I sit through these things and marvel at everyone smiling and smiling, the Hamlet quote ever -present in my mind.

Something Very Strange Is Going On Here

I appear to be officially unemployed.

For the first time in multiple decades I cannot list an “employer” on paperwork.

However, I am not yet enrolled in the “Government Teat” program, partly because I’m not exactly sure how to do so. But I’ll figure that out and will likely make that happen next week.

Trade school starts mid-September, so it appears that I am at the beginning of a vacation of sorts. But I am also without income. So, while it would appear that this year’s Gunblogger Rendezvous would be in my future, the cobwebs in my wallet speak otherwise.

I hope this means I’ll be able to post more here as soon as I get into a schedule. I’m going to make that a goal. I’ll also be doing extensive yard work, eliminating that damn honey-do list, helping out family and working at getting my motorcycle endorsement during this time.

Getting back into “fighting shape” will also be on my list of things to do. Working 50+ hours a week on a night shift will contribute heavily to making you fat and slow. This needs to be fixed in short order, so I recently bought a bicycle and now I’ll finally get to use those parks I’ve been contributing tax money to for so many years. Also, The Wife purchased a treadmill this spring for the rainy days soon to be upon the PacNW.

I guess that is about all. I’ll be back tomorrow when I am finally adjusted to this thing you all call “daytime”.

Yeah, yeah, Tom. I’m working on it.

Normally

I do not advocate for leaving a firearm in your car.

But it seemed to work for this guy, so I’m OK with it.

Two bank robbery suspects were shot in Colorado County Thursday night by a man who said they kidnapped him and his wife, a bank employee.

According to the Colorado County Sheriff’s Office, the couple had been held at gunpoint by the suspects inside their home just north of Columbus. They were then forced to drive to the First National Bank of Eagle Lake in Columbus.

The suspects then forced the woman to take out an undisclosed amount of funds, investigators said.

“We believe they had knowledge that she was an employee of the bank for them to be at the residence and to take her back,” Sgt. Andrew Weido with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office said.

He said the suspects then forced the husband to drive them in his truck south down Highway 71, and that’s when the husband of the bank employee was able to gain access to a firearm inside the vehicle.

And he used his point and click device to “thumbs down” their behavior.

And good for him.

RNS Quote of the Day, Signs and Portents Edition

Here’s a twofer. You really want to click over and read the whole thing on each. They’re short but pack a wallop.

Nothing the government has said should give you any confidence that we are not bound for the crushing of all dissent. In a nation in which the President claims the power to decide, without public scrutiny, who we are at war with, and then to execute those people with no judicial review, dissidence is fraught. The only safe course is to agree.

–Mark W. Bennett, “Signs and Portents”

Really, read the whole thing. Best “putting the pieces together” bit I’ve read yet.

And then, of course, there’s this:

…most people who work in a government job think what they do is sufficiently important to justify having any information that they want about you.

So Jimmy, this is not really about porn at all.

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Predictive Fiction

Lazy days are for truly decadent forms of self-entertainment. Why, just now I recalled to mind my the gem of a short-story thriller Frederick Forsyth crafted decades agoseemingly inspired by this truly sad 2013 news report. But even the reporter can’t resist sly, read-between-the-lines speculation towards the end of the article, it seems….
