Canada Can’t Get It Up

Canada has disaster response teams called DARTs that they wanted to send off to help with the tsunami relief. But they couldn’t.

Problem, the supplies the teams require weighs 600 tons and they only have enough serviceable aircraft to haul 52 tons.

There’s little to say about the tragedy of Canada’s response to the tsunami tragedy that hasn’t already been said. A lot of excuses have been bandied about for why Canadian soldiers weren’t sent, when Australia, Taiwan, Israel, and other countries despatched forces early, and the American military launched its largest operation in the area since Vietnam to try to save lives.

In the end, though, the answer’s pretty simple: 600 tonnes.

That’s the amount of airlift required to move the DART (Disaster Assistance Response Team). Since Canada only has the 4 CC-150 Polaris (modified Airbuses) for strategic airlift, with a cargo capacity of 13 tonnes each, rapid deployment of DART anywhere outside the effective ferry range of our 30-odd additional short-range Herc transports.

Sounds like Canda needs to dump socialism and get some good capitalistsic Viagra!

Like a rat in a trap

An insurgent was caught planting bombs under vehicles in Baghdad on Monday.

bombercaught.jpg

I think I’m liking the Iraqi version of ‘street justice’ right about now.

In Reutersland, this guy is only ‘a suspected insurgent’, even though he was caught red-handed.

DANEgerous has his own idea as to this guy’s true identity.

Always keeping the little guy under their bootheels!

Ignorance shrouds capitalism’s profound impact on reducing poverty

It should come as heartening news that 2004 was one of the most prosperous years in history. Not because the U.S. economy grew by a solid 4.3 percent, but because developing countries experienced an explosive 6.1 percent economic growth.

According to a recent study by the World Bank, 2004’s growth reflected “an expansion without precedent over the past 30 years.” Equally encouraging, the report notes that “the rapid growth of developing economies … has produced a spectacular, if not historic, fall in poverty.”

Amazingly, the World Bank report did not get much coverage in our mainstream media. It seems the press was more interested in covering the evils of globalization than in taking notice of how world trade — which grew by an astounding 10.2 percent this year — is driving economic growth.

When Americans do hear about the World Bank, it’s usually because an unruly mob is protesting against it. The protesters are long on rhetoric but short on facts.

sarcasm set to stun/ I never would have guessed that! /sarcasm off

What, are they prejudiced against hippies?

I wouldn’t fault her, because I am too.

Minorities Leaving?

Eugene, OR – Eugene’s first diversity manager… who is also the local NAACP president… has resigned from her job and is moving out of the area.

City officials say they are sad to see Marilyn Mays leave… but minority rights advocates say she is just the latest of many minority professionals leaving the city because of racial concerns.

“She’s gunna be a real loss to the organization and the community,” Lauren Chouinard, Eugene Human Resources.

I guess Eugene must have gotten their crime and homeless rates down to zero to be able to waste time with a ‘Diversity Manager’.

On a side note, go read the entire article. If the writer, Carla Castano, was raised and educated in Eugene, I’d say that Eugene needs to fire a few of their teachers.

I spotted three gramatical errors and two spelling errors.

I write better copy than that!

Massive Gun Posting

First up, I was looking through my Miday USA mailer and saw these 50 round 10/22 mags on sale for $26!

50rounder.JPG

I know they’re not $15 like they were before the AWB, but this is truly cool beans!

But I wonder why this was not on the front page of the mailer and instead buried at the bottom of a page in the middle of the thing?

Next, I see that the NRA will now have a woman as it’s President once again. Tuscon, AZ resident, Sandy Froman.

Here is Ms. Froman’s story,

Sandy Froman heard a strange noise in the middle of the night.

She peered through the peephole and saw a stranger trying to break into her home. Fear gripped her. As she waited for the police, she tried to scare the man off: She banged on the door. Cranked up the stereo. The man left, but the feeling of helplessness was life-changing.

“I realized that no one was going to take care of me but me. The police can’t be on every street corner. You need to be prepared,” said Froman, who lived in California at the time but now lives in Tucson.

Sounds like she did the right thing and took control over her own safety and wants to get other women to do the same.

In local gun news, Seattle Police Chief, Gil Kerlikowske, is an idiot for leaving his service pistol in his unmarked cruiser, where it was STOLEN!

You’d figure that the guy with a title that gives him the ability to do what I can’t, take a gun into any building in the city, wouldn’t leave his damn Glock 26 in his Crown Vic.

I’m going to keep an eye open for new laws coming down the pipe covering the possession and storage of firearms after this little episode. The news commentators are already starting in with ‘If it can happen to the Chief of Police, it can happen to anyone’ crap.

With the unveiling of Mr. Mollbot’s newst projectile thrower, the Rivrdog decided to show of his newest aquisition, the Black Rose (aka Rosie).

Much Kewlness. I’ll be writing you soon, RD, and we’ll figure out a way to put some rounds downrange.

After yesterday’s Boomershoot extravaganza, I stopped by The View from North Central Idaho and saw that I was just a pawn in Joe Huffman’s plan.

‘Analog Kid at Random Nuclear Strike posts about Senor Mollbot at What Hath I Wrought picking up his new rifle to be used at Boomershoot 2005. I also would like to note that these guys are buying/building new rifles for Boomershoot 2005. It looks like my secret plan is working…’

It may be your plan, Joe, but I love it when a plan comes together!

And if you haven’t done so already, don’t forget to stop by the Bommershoot 2005 site and take a look around.

Count ANY Vote: Part Shestnadtsat

In new Washington State Gubernatorial Election developments, the Repubs think they have found the smoking gun.

KIRO7 News – State Republican Party leaders say they’ve found 8,400 more ballots cast than the number of voters registered in the state’s five largest counties.

State GOP Chairman Chris Vance says the mismatching numbers in King, Pierce, Snohomish, Clark and Kitsap are troubling.

Republicans are mulling a possible legal challenge to the election, and Vance says discrepancies like the ones they found so far are clear indications that things went wrong.

8400 is a large number, yes it is.

But is it enough for a judge to toss out the results of the last recount?

Sadly, I do not believe so, unless they find someone with a truly open mind.

When the R’s take this to court, they’re going to have D lawyers playing every single excuse they can think of for the discrepancy, from the plausible “domestic violence victims who have requested confidentiality so their names will never appear on a voter list” to the insipid “aliens took one of the voter registration files”.

And like I promised, if they R’s succeed in find an open minded judge who is willing to toss out an election and let the Lt. Governor sit in the big chair while we sort this out, I will be the first to say I was wrong, right before your very eyes.

But one thing I will not do is link to the poorly named “revote” site.

How about “NewVote” or “FairVote” or something that doesn’t sound like we’re sore losers asking for a ‘do over’. Is that too much to ask for, huh?

Another dent in the Dems ‘let’s quit counting now’ armor is this, from Sound Politics,

Intrepid SoundPolitics reader Michael Nervik pulled published death notices from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer for August 25th, 2004, then cross-checked the results with the King County voter database. Out of 37 names he found 4 of these that seem to have had an absentee ballot sent in for the November election. He found 4 other identical names from the obituary that voted at the polls, and/or in a different city in King county, that we haven’t included here.

In trivial news, after Gregoire was certified as Governor elect, a woman wanted a refund for the tickets she bought for the Inaugural Ball.

The powers that be, of course, said no.

“We had one lady who wanted her money back. She liked Rossi,” Neuhauser said. But the committee has not given refunds in 150 years, and is not going to start this year, he said.

I meant to post this yesterday

But I got caught up in other stuff…

Ed Lynch’s “You might be a Liberal if…..”

You think that if someone is getting richer, someone, somewhere, must be getting poorer.

You think that Rush Limbaughs listeners are mindless dittoheads, but you have never doubted anything that you heard from Michael Moore.

You believe that more federal regulations will make your life better.

You believe that there was never, ever a problem with biased news coverage until Fox News went on the air.

You believe that Mikhail Gorbachev deserves more credit for losing the Cold War than Ronald Reagan deserves for winning it.

You mentally subtract 100 points from someones IQ if the person speaks with a Southern accent.

You think that the phrase separation of church and state is in the Constitution.

You are dedicated to helping the poor, the downtrodden and the less fortunate, but you have never given blood.

You think that raising taxes will reduce the budget deficit.

You deplore prejudice and bigotry in all its forms, but think that everyone in the red states is an idiot.

You believe that nativity scenes should be banned from public view, but that anyone objecting to pornography only has to look the other way.

You are worried about how the French view Americans.

Just some of my faves. Follow the link for more.

Those ‘Civilized’ Europeans

Those lovable french folks ring in the new year in their own special way…..

Vandals torched a total of 333 cars in France during New Year’s celebrations, according to official figures released at the weekend – an unpleasant annual tradition that is not seen anywhere else in Europe.

The total was up nine from last year, prompting the interior ministry to note a “stability in the phenomena of urban violence”.

More than 270 people were detained for questioning in connection with the blazes, while 19 police officers were slightly injured.

In nearly all cases, the arson attacks came in what the government considers to be “difficult” areas on the outskirts of Paris, the eastern city of Strasbourg and its suburbs.

France is the only country in Europe where torching cars has become a New Year’s custom, according to data collected by AFP’s bureaux across the continent.

That’s OK in my mind, the French don’t make any decent cars anyway.

More Useless Information

This isn’t just ANY BBC story, it’s their ‘100 things we didn’t know this time last year’ list.

#1 Popped out at Rodger of Curmudgeonly & Skeptical fame,

1. Street brawlers sometimes arm themselves with potato peelers, according to the Home Office, which wants to make them banned weapons.

#63 Made me sit up and take notice

63. Just one in a hundred workers goes to the pub for their lunch, according to a study. The same proportion spend lunch having sex.

I go to Jack in the Box. Not quite a ‘pub’ per se, but I work at the garbage company, so that is the more favorable of the two options.

PSQ

Public Service Question….

My mom and my Aunt were going through the last of the personal effects from my great uncle Roy’s estate and found boxes of stuff from his memberships in the Shriners and the Masons.

And she has a question,

What do we do with all of this stuff?

I’ve gone into Google and all I can find regarding the proper disposal of certain things is 1. Give it to a fellow lodge brother 2. Donate it to the lodge he belonged to (one in Tacoma I think. I was there once, but couldn’t tell you where). But never, never just throw it away, or put it in a garage sale or give it to the Goodwill.

Any tips or suggestions would be welcome.

A list of the items is in the extended entry.
