The Alamo a Symbol of Slavery?
A claim on the children’s cable TV outlet Nickelodeon that the 1836 Battle of the Alamo was fought so ‘white farmers could keep their slaves’ has sparked controversy and outrage in this city, where the Texans who died in the historic battle are held up as examples for people to emulate, 1200 WOAI news reported Tuesday.
The fifty second long piece on Nickelodeon, which is part of an ongoing series of features about the U.S. called ‘My Back Yard,” shows a San Antonio teenager telling the largely pre-teen audience that ‘in the early 1800’s, most of the people living in San Antonio were white farmers who brought their slaves with them.’ It goes on to claim that conflict over slavery between slaveholding settlers and a Mexican government which had abolished slavery ‘led up’ to the Battle of the Alamo.
When the left talks about the revising of history, they should look in the mirror.

For the RNS readers who are in the Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia/Everett area, NBC affiliate KING 5 will be airing footage and interviews taken by their producer/reporter Kim Griffis and photojournalist/editor Mark Morache on the primetime show, Evening Magazine tomorrow night at 1900.
For readers in Portland, Spokane and Vancouver, you may be able to catch the rebroadcast of the episode on your local Northwest Cable News channel, but you will have to keep your eyes peeled for that as the Seattle station does not know the rebroadcast schedule.
And for the non-northwest readers, Boomershoot staff member, Ry Jones, will be finding a way to put the video on a DVD and I will point you in that direction when it becomes available.
I will be at work and will not be able to watch it live, so I will be relying on you all to tell me how it looked until I can watch the tape.
One tip for the local Seattle readers, if they treat us well it might not be a bad idea to write Kim and Mark and commend them on the segment.
No, not a terrorist.

Rock Hill student charged after bringing nails to school
May 7, 2005 – An 11-year-old boy was arrested this week for carrying ten nails in his pocket at a Rock Hill middle school and charged with carrying an unlawful weapon.
Dianne McCray, assistant principal at Rawlinson Road Middle School, asked the child Wednesday what was jingling in his pocket and the student gave her the 3.5″ long nails.
A school resource officer arrested him. His father picked him up and he was not taken to the police station.
The father said the nails were left in his pocket after a Boy Scout outing. He says it is ridiculous that his son faces an unlawful weapon charge. He says the boy threatened no one.
An upstanding youth with no previous history of trouble gets arrested for not threatening anyone. But how much do you want to bet that the schoolyard bully who beat threatened to beat the crap out of a fellow student just got a stern look and a note sent home with him?
Another reason to abolish the public school system altogether.
Sometimes you need to wonder about the Euros sense of priority.
Stealth Tax Heaped on Horse Manure
The horse industry is about to be hit by a new stealth tax – on manure, a business pressure group warned today.
New laws by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, which come into force in July, will mean that equestrian businesses from livery yards to studs and riding schools which compost muck to use as fertiliser, will have to obtain a permit costing up to £500.
Andrew Mowlah, Head of Research at the Forum of Private Business says the move will hit the smaller firms hardest.
Mr Mowlah said the legislation came as a double whammy as from July 1, to compost, the waste businesses will need to have installed leak-proof concrete flooring beneath the muck heaps with a sealed holding tank for the liquid run off, all at a cost which could run into thousands of pounds.
Sounds like a load of shit to me.
You’ll have to excuse me, I’m still getting caught up on reading my blogroll so I apologize if I’m late with this one.
It seems as though Fidel is going to get another bunch of admirers down to the country he turned into a shithole for a ‘visit’.
The American band Audioslave is to become the first US rock act to give a free open-air concert to audiences in Communist Cuba. The event, on Friday night, has been given the rare approval of both the Cuban and US governments.
For those not in the know, Audioslave is the resurrection of Rage Against The Machine, except with Chris Cornell, formerly of Soundgarden, in the lead vox slot.
Luckily for me, I was never concerned with RATM and was highly unimpressed with Audioslave, feeling that they hadn’t come close to their potential, and own none of their albums.
Now if we could just get the rest of the “No Blood for Oil rock bands down their and deny them re-entry to the US, I’d be happy.

They actually published this Letter to the Editor

On reading your May 1 editorial “The Shoot-First State,” I am struck with a sense of deja vu. It seems to me that The Post ran the same “Wild West” editorial when Virginia decided to allow its citizens to carry guns legally.
We now see the same tired predictions of shootouts and streets cluttered with dead bodies in the Sunshine State. It didn’t happen in Virginia, and it won’t happen in Florida.
Any use of deadly force in claimed self-defense, anywhere in the United States, will certainly be investigated, and that level of force must be shown to have been justified. A killing, wounding or even display of a weapon in response to a lesser threat can and will be treated as a crime.
The Post has reported that Sarah Brady deplores the Florida law, lamenting that people might be able to respond to deadly force with deadly force rather than running away.
Reasonable people might wonder how a woman or elderly or disabled person would be able to “just run away” if threatened with death or grievous bodily harm.
The Post’s response to the idea that innocent people might defend themselves is certainly predictable. But its wild “predictions” are out of its own warped imagination.
It is The Post, not the state of Florida, that is living in a “Wild West” fantasyland.

Joe Huffman reposted this editorial by Jospeh P. Tartaro from after the mid-term elections of 1994
Rep. Charles Schumer (D-NY), Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Sen. John Chafee (R-RI) made their big anti-gun push after Terry and Florio lost. They are all going to be back in the 104th Congress and they have said nothing to indicate that they will not keep pushing. Schumer and Feinstein got only part of what they wanted. Chafee didn’t get his bill to ban all handguns in the last Congress, so he can be expected to file it again.
Schumer’s agenda still calls for passage of Brady II, which would require, among other things, that all handguns be licensed by the states along federal guidelines on a “needs” basis, that the licenses would have to be shown to buy handgun ammunition for the particular licensed guns, that the licenses would be renewable every two years at high cost, that people who own more than 20 firearms (rifles, shotguns and/or handguns) or 1,000 rounds of ammunition or one box of primers would have to pay for an expensive arsenal license and be subject to home inspection by the police. Brady II will be filed again, in part because Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA), who was re-elected also, called for its passage during his election campaign.

Joe calls it “A reminder of how far we have come in the last few years.
I can agree with that.
But I would also call it something that should be read by gun owners every morning so as to keep them vigilant.
In the Mecca of eminent stupidity within a morning’s driving distance from me, the City of Portland, OR has pulled themselves out of the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force.
Mayor Tom Potter is acting like a schoolyard bitch-boy because he, like every other mayor in the US, cannot get the Top Secret clearance necessary for unrestricted access to current investigations going on in his city and on the citizens involved.
As John at SomePoorSchmuckBlog says: “Tom just wants to give everyone a group hug.
“I don’t think whether we stay in or out of the JTTF will determine the safety of Portland citizens. I think what will determine the safety of Portland citizens is when we work together, when we watch out for each and care for each other, that our society is safer.”
Pull your head out of your ass Tom; just what exactly do you think your JTTF officers were doing?
I am actually of two minds in all this…
My knee jerk reaction is that of a law abiding citizen who cannot stand having the feds mucking about in his backyard.
On the other hand, no potential terrorist would attack his home city (aka the ‘Don’t Shit Where You Eat’ frame of mind), but they would go after somewhere close by.
Hmmm, what other major metropolitan area could they attack that is within a short interstate drive?
Oh well, I guess I‘m locked and loaded for a reason.
