   Lots of folks make victimhood part of their identity. It’s a fun gig if you’re into that sort of thing, getting attention and sympathy from others for the wrongs that have been done to you or your kinfolk. It’s easier to take on the mantle of victimhood rather than be proud of your accomplishment because to accoomplish something you have to do something. You don’t even have to suffer to take on the mantlehood of victimhood; you can acquire it if your ancestors or predecessors suffered. For some, this mantle of victimhood becomes the greatest part or even the whole of their identity.
   The aforementioned SWM exposed a certain void in their lives simply by asking for other experiences or narratives or interest. “Yes, you’re a victim, but what else are you?” he asked. And they replied so badly because they have nothing.
   However, this phenomenon isn’t limited to liberals and progressives. Sometimes Christians play up the victimhood card as well. Phelps and Westboro is a particularly odious example of this; “we’re so persecuted because we’re putting forth the word of God and people don’t like it”. When someone rants about God being taken out of the schools, and there being a concentrated assault on Christianity, they’re taking on the victimhood mentality. Poor, white racists do it as well; they’ve victims of ZOG, Jews, and folks of darker races. (Ask yourself when you’ve last seen a successful racist who admits Klan membership.) And the Muslim terrorists definately take it on, with their constant hate upon Israel for ruining the pan-Arab caliphate dream, or when they rant about godless Westerners corrupting culture and countries in the Middle East, and the history of American & European meddling in geo-political affairs since the end of colonialism. For them, the use of victimhood is so high as to elevate every suicide bomber and every victim of Israeli defense to the status of martyr.
   Victimhood & identity: another tactic we all use in the game of politics.

   PS- please notice the part in bold. If you ignore victimhood, in their black/white world, this means you’re automatically privledged.

   pdagh72 voices a complaint similar to one I’ve made about gays. I got someone severely pissed at me because I explained to them — patiently — that they had to define themselves by MORE than just their sexuality, or they would never find acceptance. They had to be a PERSON, not just a cardboard cut-out.

    Ed, the modern liberal no longer recognizes the hatred between sub-ethnicities within a larger race (the exception being Jews). Your hatred for Italians invading Gaul, or an Irishman’s hatred of the English in his land, is all in the distant past and should be forgotten, says the modern progressive. If you’re in America, you’re now just White. And even if you’re of French extract, you’re still on the hook for what the Belgians did in the Congo, or what the English did in India, all because you’re white.
    Ironically, unlike blacks and Latino/Chicanos/whatever they’re called this week, you are not allowed to celebrate any kind of racial pride. Nope, it’s racist (and difficult to “take back” since there’s a lot of actually racist people who go around shouting “white power”). However, you are allowed to celebrate your sub-ethnic / cultural pride (Irish, German, etc).

    Yeah, I’ll pass on ‘white power’. I don’t see anything wrong in celebrating Scandinavian culture though (I’m descended from Swedes on my dad’s side).
