America’s Churchill

I was about to write a post about the parallels when I found someone had beat me to it. And done a fantastic job, too.

I don’t see Gingrich as the likely GOP candidate, but by God, if he got into the Oval Office, “Churchillian” would be an understatement.

Not saying that’s necessarily a good thing; remember Churchill was despised by an awful lot of folks on both sides of the aisle. But where I can’t see Romney being one of the “great men” in history (in the meteor-through-the-firmament sense of greatness, not the “what a great president!” sense), I can see Gingrich having it in him.

Gingrich is a designed and crafted product, not a man.

Well, yeah, designed and crafted by Gingrich himself. I mean, the ego on the guy is unreal. But Churchill was exactly the same way. For example, who else goes around thinking of himself in the third person? Churchill did.

He is already the equivalent of Churchill – in his mind.

I have a hard time with “Greatness” in men who can’t control their moral responsibilities and actions. Newt has exhibited that failure.

I like a lot of his ideas, but his inability to control his moral compass concerns me.

I’d be worried about his ability to control his moral compass if I believed he had one. As it is I see him as a very, very good, very knowledgeable, intelligent practitioner in political rhetoric. He knows which buttons to push and how to push them. Big deal. The same things could be said of Ted Bundy, you understand. The best thing Newt could be doing is teaching history at a private college, but I don’t want to see him anywhere near DC.

Churchill?! This guy ran one very successful election cycle, using a promotion new to the electorate, to gain control of the House. Then he pissed his success away by failing to succeed in passing conservative legislation, and allowed himself and his party to be demonized by the Clintons. The CLINTONS! He even screwed up his own elected position by being unable to keep his trousers up.

    Churchill?! Ha, ha, ha.
