One thing I didn’t know about having a lifted Cherokee before creating one is that, like motorcyclists and other subgroups in the world of internal combustion transportation, Jeep guys signal each other while moving through traffic. I think it took two whole days before I first got fanned. While I wasn’t surprised, I did find myself not being ready for it until I came up with a standardized reply.

Some guys signal with a whole hand. Others just put up a thumb. I flash the Rock Hand \m/.

This last Thursday I was driving home from school and got fanned by a hand of a fellow Cherokee driver. Unfortunately, at that moment I was getting my ass kicked at high decibels from Rush’s Live at the Hammersmith Odeon and was in the middle of the Anthem track. I had just reached for a fistful of fourth from the shifter when the fanning happened. I whipped up the Rock Hand from the Hurst handle so hard I damn-near sprained my wrist.

This was not some sort of limp wrist problem. I shoot 1911’s on the regular and have shot all the .4 and .5 caliber magnums without injury. I just had Too Much Rock for One Hand.
