The glasses in particular are the result of a comment by Massad Ayoob some years ago. He claimed that he kept shooting glasses in his car for passengers and especially kids to protect their eyes from shattered glass or other hazards that might show up while driving. I wear tough glasses myself most of the time anyway, and I don’t have a lot of passengers, so generally these sit quietly in their cases. However, they’d be the first thing I’d put on during an earthquake, and I’d be glad to have ’em. As much trouble as they’ve given me over the years, my eyes are still pretty darn precious.
The binoculars have been fun. How many times have you wanted to look closely at something in the distance? Happens a lot to me. It takes as little as 20 seconds to pull over, pop the binocs out, and see what you want to see. Drives my wife nuts.
