He Smiles

While he bows his head in shame that he couldn’t pass up a deal.

Nope, just couldn’t do it. I made a stop into Palazzo Precision Rifles yesterday on my way to work to talk to the smith who built Barak the Boomershoot Rifle about re-stocking the Ruger 22-250.

After talking for a bit, I made mention that when I get this rifle done (stock, scope, rings and trigger) I would be ready to build my next rifle and I asked him if he still had any of the CZ550 Magnum actions that he had shown me when I made the final pick up of Barak.

To my wallet’s disdain, he said he did. One. He grabbed it out of the box in the safe that it and the other two had been delivered in and let me look at it.

550.jpg

Elegant lines covered in a deep presentation blue finish and weighing in at close to the same weight as my 1911. While turning it over in my hands I noticed that the serial number happened to also be the year I was born.

I couldn’t say “Sold fast enough.

The 2007 Boomershoot rifle is currently ready to be built. It’ll be chambered in .338 Lapua and based from the CZ action and my current thoughts are to have a 30in Hart stainless barrel (not counting the muzzle brake) screwed onto it. If I can find a double trigger set-up for it, I’m thinking of going that route.

None of the manufacturers of composite rifle stocks produce a stock for it as of now, but I’m thinking of laminated wood anyway. Nothing fancy, just nice enough to not make folks drool too much.

I say Boomershoot 2007 because Barak cost me *cough* a lot *cough* and took me from September 2004 to March 2005 to build because of that cost. I was broke for every single one of those months because every spare penny went into that rifle.

And while I didn’t enjoy the being broke part, I thoroughly enjoy every single time I put a round downrange through that rifle. I seriously cannot stop smiling when I pull the trigger and it puts the bullet right where I pointed it at any distance I’ve tried.

And I don’t want to not enjoy the building of the gun I have already named ‘Ma Bell’ (because I can reach out and touch someone with it), so I am going to take my time.

I’ll be getting the 22-250 ready for Boomershoot 2006 and I will attempt to dominate the 400yd targets with it, so long as I keep up with my wind doping practice this winter, and Barak will be there for the longer distance targets.

Just as an FYI, I do try to talk Mike Palazzo into getting himself a website every time I stop by his place. He is hesitant because he isn’t very web savvy. If you want to know more about Palazzo Precision Rifles, just click that ‘Email Me’ button in the right hand column and I’ll tell you everything I know.

Mike is the only smith I would pay to build me a rifle. Every penny spent is spent well and I could not recommend him more. This is coming from a guy who has dealt with easily 75% of the smiths in the Seattle/Tacoma/Everett/Olympia area at one time or another.
