Rivrdog sent me a link to a news story over the weekend.

Reputed mob figure, trash hauler arrested

A reputed mob boss, a former mayor and the owner of a trash hauling business were among 29 people charged Friday in a federal investigation into the mob’s influence over the region’s trash hauling industry.

The indictment alleges that companies owned by James Galante paid a “mob tax” to Matthew Ianniello, the reputed boss of the Genovese crime family. The payments were part of a scheme in which trash haulers carved out routes and agreed not to steal each other’s customers, according to the indictment.

The mob influence stifled competition “by preventing small independent companies from competing,” the indictment alleges.

I highlighted the end of that snippet of the story for a very important reason:

If the feds are going to indict and prosecute these 29 people for the point of convicting them and sending them to prison, then they need to swing into the Pacific NW and do the exact same thing to the Seattle City Council.

And this is why:

Up until a few years ago, the City of Seattle set only minimum charges for ‘Municiple Solid Waste’ (aka MSW). This was so that one of the large national companies couldn’t step in and undercut the small guy, thereby putting him out of business. The larger companies could afford to take the hit from charging 25% less than the smaller companies and while this minimum wasn’t the best idea as to how to control it, it worked relatively well.

So instead of undercutting the smaller guys, the two largest companies came into town and just bought 90% of them up and combined them into two competing powerhouses. The unions didn’t complain about this one bit. And neither did I because it was the nature of the market for it to happen, AND it put me in a better position to ask for extra monetary compensation for my time spent at ‘work’.

But in the past couple years, the Seattle City Council has gone from mildly socialistic to completely Bolshevic.

The city of Seattle is split into two ‘zones’. Only one of the two largest companies is allowed to pick up ANY trash in that one ‘zone’. The other company is subject to fines if they pick up within the other’s ‘zone’. The charges are set by, billed by and collected by the city. The city then gives the collection/hauling companies their money depending on the amount collected/hauled.

If a customer in one zone wants their MSW to be picked up by the other company, that customer MUST pay a 10% surcharge directly to the city. No ifs, ands or buts allowed.

This is for private commercial MSW only. The residential areas have been divided up into three zones and those are bid out to any company, but because of the lock on the commercial end of the business, only two companies will ever be able to gather the manpower to fulfill the necessary bid.

Also, things like commercial recycling are somewhat open for competition, but if you read my post on how socialists killed the recycling industry, you’d know there isn’t much competition there anymore either.

The minimum price fix is still in place for things like concrete, wood and gypsum recycling as well as construction debris, with some of the smaller companies still being able to compete, so long as the larger companies don’t try too exceptionally hard to run them out of town.

But when it comes to MSW, I see no difference between what the 29 defendants in the Connecitcut story are accused of and what the Seattle City Council has done.

To the Council, competition is “A Bad Thing” that they must have control over.

Not Looking for Trouble

I was out rolling about with Grimm yesterday when I saw something I’d seen before, but never really paid much attention to.

This bumpersticker

jeepsticker1.jpg

Seeing as how, from my seat in Grimm’s cabin, I can see directly into the interior of just about any Jeep I could imagine being roadworthy, and that, other than the width factor, I can’t imagine a place that a Jeep could go that Grimm couldn’t, I think that sticker is especially poigniant.

So I’m toying with the idea of getting one for Grimm.

I think he’d like it.

Signage

Reader Paul sent me a link to a North Versailles, Pennsylvania restaurant & lounge called Casa D’Ice.

The owner of Casa D’Ice has very loud opinions on things such as politics. He also has a rather tall and large readerboard which he uses to voice these opinions.

Here is the link to their website. (Their server isn’t the greatest, so if you get an error, the traffic is probably just heavy)

Here is an example of one of the billboards

And finally, if you are anywhere near North Versailles, PA, for all that is right on this planet, patronize this restaurant!

Infinite What?

So I’m crusing Kosland for something stupid and, of course, didn’t have to travel far.

Kos Kiddie “da” goes back to 1957 to find Russel Kirk’s ’10 Conservative Principles’ and does the progressive version of a fisk on them. It is a rather long read, and not really very interesting. That is, until I get to Point #7 on “Freedoms”.

Kirk’s words:

Conservatives are persuaded that freedom and property are closely linked.

And Kirk is right. If you are going to let the government tell you what you can own, whether it be land, cars or firearms, you are giving up all of your essential freedoms by giving up that one.

“da” doesn’t see it that way. To him, the right to own property is just another in a long list of rights; what he likes to call “the progressive pillars of the infinite taxonomy of freedom”

Would you like to hear what else he considers a “Right”? I knew you would…..

Progressives appreciate the incredible breadth of freedom. It’s telling that it took Kirk six other topics (starting with moral order!) before finally getting around to any kind of meaningful discussion of freedom. For as much blathering as conservatives do about freedom, it isn’t really a top priority of theirs. Even when it is, they miss the point of it, as the freedom linked to the ownership of property is among the most vulgar and coarse of freedoms. The cognitive freedoms – freedom of speech, freedom to learn, freedom of and from religion, freedom of thought – as well as freedom from want and freedom from fear are the progressive pillars of the infinite taxonomy of freedom. Those are the substantial freedoms and form one of the two core philosophies of progressivism.

This isn’t at all to say that private property shouldn’t exist, of course! It just means that property rights have to be placed alongside other rights and freedoms. This gives rise to a certain critical but generally positive approach to capitalism: it needs to be housebroken, not smashed.

Freedom from WANT? Freedom from FEAR? WTF is this guy talking about? Just how far does he WANT to take these concepts?

If someone has a Chevy and WANTS a Cadillac, would he go that far, or is he only talking about food, water, shelter? And if so, why doesn’t he just say that? And exactly how would he propose keeping those who do WANT their free Cadillac from using his newly found rights to get themselves one?

If I were to win the lottery jackpot tomorrow, a big one, none of this two or three million dollars crap (though it would be nice), but a 300 million or more jackpot, you know what, it wouldn’t be enough.

It is not that I’m exceptionally greedy or the ultimate power shopper, it is just that I have a long list of WANTS. After buying a nice house and getting my investments set up so that I can live off the interest, the very first WANT I’d fulfill would be to go about suing every single anti-gun organization for attempting, sometimes successfully, to deny me my Second Amendment rights (which you may have noticed “da” doesn’t bother to mention).

Sure, I probably wouldn’t ever win a single case, but if those organization WANT to sue firearms manufacturers into backruptcy, I’d olbige them the same courtesy. When the Brady Bunch, VPC, etc, could no longer continue to assault my rights and my intelligence, I’d find something else to spend my money on, probably my own private island, which I would then use the lawyers from my previous venture to turn into my own country.

Freedom from FEAR? Fear of what, a giant space insect? Fear of the electricity being shut off because you can’t pay the bill because your welfare spigot was shut off? Hell, I’m somewhat afraid of my own government, I’d almost be willing to go along with this if he promised to get rid of that.

There are a couple other “Freedoms” that he has made up which I would like to get into, but frankly, they are just so bang-your-head-against-the-wall stupid that I’d rather not waste my time. Feel free to do so with them or with thses in the comments though.

Creating Headlines

After the countless horror stories from Canadian and UK socialized medicine programs, it is pretty much a given that I believe anyone who thinks that it is better for people to be given “free” medical coverage as opposed to inspiring people to work for their own health care coverage is a out and out idiot.

So imagine the gathering of my ire when I read this headline:

Panel urges guaranteed health care by 2012

The government should guarantee a core set of health benefits for all Americans by 2012 even if it means raising taxes, a nonpartisan advisory panel created by Congress has recommended.

I’ve read the entire article multiple times and, oddly enough, while it mentions this issue as something that may come up in the November elections, it doesn’t mention any names of the people on this panel.

Seeing as how this was written by Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar of the Los Angeles Times and then republished in a very liberal paper in Seattle, I can only assume that the headline was not written by anyone at Fox News.

I say this because of the words used the headline because, anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows that health care itself is covered for ANYONE who wanders their way into ANY hospital.

What they do not say is that the ‘advisory panel’ wants it to be paid for with TAXPAYER DOLLARS.

So, since the ‘professionals’ cannot get the headline issue correct or the story informative, I am going to lend a hand to them. Here is my proposed headline:

‘Analog Kid urges Panel to Kiss His Ass on Healthcare by 2012’

That would get people reading. I have a story to go along with it, but I’ll save that until they send me a request.

Murtha To Run For Majority Leader If Democrats Take The House

Comments by the Klueless Kos Kids

Ok by me. Odd he would not seek speaker instead, but could not hurt to have a Fighting Dem as our leader.

by Esoterically Inclinded

if we take the house there is a good possibility that the house majority leader could be the next president of the united states.

I can think of no better guy in the house.

by Irishkorean

this nips all the Pelosi talk from the right wingers in the bud. He needed to get out in front of all this talk. independents will be much more likely to vote democrat if they look up and see Murtha taking the reigns of the party vs. Pelosi. In the absence of fear, truth becomes absolute.

by bohdi777

This will be pure gold for the (R)s, if we can get it out there far enough. Pelosi doesn’t scare enough middle of the road folks. Murtha does. At least in this Klueless Kos Kid’s opinion

I’m looking forward to having this debate AFTER the election. Jeez, Rep. Murtha, why don’t you just hand Republicans their talking point of the week?

by cardinal

Because he’s gone off his meds, card.

After the Fact

The morning I made my ome from Kobe, the lady who had been cleaning my hotel room arrived a bit early. She said that she had wanted to make sure everything was inorder after the hotel patrons in the adjoining rooms had complained about the large amounts of screaming, banging and other noises that had previously come from my room.

Of course, after she found out who I was (I have to travel under an assumed name due to both my popularity and the jealous husbands), she was ever so kind as to ablige me some of her time, especially seeing as how she was running ahead of schedule for the day.

Repeat Oklahoma Child Molesters Face Death Penalty

Oklahoma on Friday became the fifth state to allow the death penalty for certain sex crimes, although legal scholars questioned the constitutionality of the new state law.

Under the measure signed by Gov. Brad Henry, anyone convicted twice for rape, sodomy or lewd molestation involving children under 14 can face the death penalty.

South Carolina’s governor signed a similar law on Thursday allowing the death penalty for offenders convicted twice of raping children younger than 11. Louisiana, Florida and Montana also have laws allowing the death penalty for certain sex crimes.

Oh, alright! Maybe just a couple bars.

Oklahoma, where the needle gets poked into your vein

And the wavin’ wheat can sure smell sweet

When you see the pervert wince with such great pain!

Don’t Even Think

Of trying to teach them the Hokey-Pokey.

That whole ‘Right Foot In / Right Foot Out’ thing could possibly lead to an overload on their ‘free’ medical system when they all slip and fall.

Canadian Lawmakers Accidentally Pass Budget in House

The Canadian government’s C$227 billion ($204 billion) budget was passed in the House of Commons after opposition lawmakers accidentally failed to stand up to debate the spending plan.

“It passed with unanimous consent,” Finance Minister Jim Flaherty told reporters outside the House of Commons in Ottawa today.
