You know you are in Montana when

There are multiple copies of Guns & Ammo magazine sitting next to multiple copies of Ladies Home Journal in the Maternity Ward Waiting Room.

I think Craig from MTPolitics can back me up on this. And the wife keeps wondering why I want to move there.

Here’s a secret: the actual reason the Analog Wife is over in MT-Land is that her oldest brother and his wife were about to welcome their 5th child into the world, and the young gentleman arrived yesterday.

My memory is a bit fuzzy because the wife called and told me shortly after I woke up yesterday, so you’ll have to excuse me, but I remember her saying something to the effect of ‘Jacob Andrew’.

Pictures, and possible corrections, coming forthwith (or, whenever they get time to email them).

Mo Money! Mo Money! Mo Money!

That is the only reply the American Left has when the topic of why American schools are failing not only to educate the students properly, but society in turning out a substandard product.

Other than the nose-high world of “Art”, I know of no other industry where you can produce a horrible product, ask for more cash, and actually get it (other than just about every other government agency, of course).

It is the same here in Washington as it is everywhere else. Give students who are functionally illiterate a diploma and kick them out into a world they can’t function in = more money for schools.

And not just money, but special benefits for teachers who are untested as to skill, unproven in ability and products of their own educational system.

Take the Teacher Home Loan Program in Seattle. If you are a teacher at any of the Seattle Public Schools, you automatically qualify for assitance to buy a home within the outrageously expensive district (median home price: $400K).

How odd that, in a market that is artificially inflated, and if you ask me, nowhere near worth the cost, the reason the program, has only helped a grand total of five teachers in nine months buy homes in the district isn’t because they don’t make enough, but because they make too much.

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels announced last November a new loan program to help public-school teachers buy a home.

Nickels said the program would “bring homeownership within reach for many teachers,” and his office sent out a press release proclaiming it would help as many as 70 teachers in the first year.

Nine months later, only five teachers have received loans.

Why? Many teachers make too much money to qualify for the loans, and those who qualify can’t find many houses or condos in Seattle they want and can afford. The low number of loans seems to show just how hard it is for young professionals, particularly singles, to become homeowners in Seattle’s hot housing market.

“I don’t know anybody my age that owns a home in Seattle unless they have a spouse that made it possible,” said Kim Christiansen, 32, a science teacher at Ingraham High School in North Seattle, who recently used the city loan program to buy a $199,500 West Seattle condo.

Yes, you read that correctly, $200,000 to own AN APARTMENT in hipster-ville.

So much for the “Overworked and Underpaid” spiel that the NEA and the WEA are always lying to us about.

By the way, for those not familiar with Seattle’s geography, her new West Seattle home is not only at nearly the opposite end of town from where she teaches, before she can even enter downtown Seattle, she has to cross a bridge famous for its horrific traffic snarls just to get to downtown. After that, she can either hop onto the crumbling viaduct, which is again, usually jammed up, or take the surface streets through downtown to try and bypass the viaduct, or just say screw it and get onto the stretch of I-5 that goes through downtown which, more often than not, is moving at less than 30mph (if not stopped completely) from 5am to 8pm.

Winston Churchill wrote a book titled “The River War”.

An excerpt:

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it.

No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.

A couple of months ago, Winston Churchill III gave a speech.

An excerpt:

Those who have declared jihad against the West, and Western values, such as freedom of speech, are doing all in their power to mobilize against us the large Muslim communities living in our midst. In North America, there are an estimated six million Muslims in the USA, plus a further three-quarter million in Canada; while in the European Union, they number an estimated 20 million, including nearly 2 million in Britain. Unlike most other categories of migrant, the Muslims are reluctant to assimilate and, all too often, wish to pursue their own agenda.

Both the speech and the book are well worth the time to read them. Lee at Right Thinking from the Left Coast has a link to the speech, as well as a link where you can download “The River War” free of charge (choose the zip file, Comcast got it to my harddrive in 7 seconds).

It is a pity that having given the Islamists at least 107 years to assimilate and become the equal of the western world, they have chosen to stay in the 7th Century.

Point this fact out to anyone who tries to lie to you and say that the main reason they’re attacking us is because of the abject poverty they live in. If they still won’t shut up and read these two items, you are then free to connect foot to testicles, for you have done everything to enlighten them away from their leftist talking points.

Can’t win on the issues

Seattle liberals and ‘progressives’ are afraid of losing their stranglehold on Washington State in the mid-term election in November.

The state Republican Party has fielded the former CEO of Safeco Insurance, Mike McGavick, to run against incumbent junior Senator Maria Cantwell. McGavick took Safeco from what was an actual slippery slope of financial ruin to where they are today, an industry leader. When he resigned his position to run for the Senate seat, McGavick got a very nice severance package consisting of $28 Million dollars.

And because McGavick is running quite close to Cantwell in the polls, the left wing of the Democratic Party has ignited their base to make baseless acusations against him.

A descendant of a founder of Safeco Corporation and her politically active attorney will announce later this morning that they’re suing Senate candidate and former Safeco CEO Mike McGavick for the $28 million he was paid by the company this year.

Emma Schwartzman is the great, great granddaughter of a Safeco founder. She is scheduled to appear at a press conference near Safeco’s Seattle headquarters with attorney Knoll Lowney. who successfully challenged in court Tim Eyman’s property tax initiative. Lowney and his firm have given political donations to liberal candidates and groups such as Washington Conservation Voters. His law partner, Richard Smith, announced last week he would run for state Supreme Court.

According to a press release sent this morning the “central claim in the suit is that a significant portion of the $28 million McGavick received from Safeco after he resigned as Safeco’s CEO resulted from a fraudulent transaction between McGavick and the Board of Directors that breached defendants’ fiduciary duties to shareholders. The suit also alleges that the Board of Directors violated federal securities laws by concealing the magnitude and extraordinary nature of the payout.”

The Democratic Party and supporters of Sen. Maria Cantwell have already focused on McGavick’s pay. The state Democratic Party filed a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission in April, alleging that McGavick’s compensation was an illegal campaign contribution. In June, liberal blogger David Goldstein was searching for Safeco shareholders angry at McGavick’s compensation.

The key piece of information in that blockquote is the last sentence.

David Goldstein is better known as ‘Goldy’ from Seattle-based left-wing Horses Ass. org blog. He has made complaining about McGavick’s successful venture into capitalism a full time subject at his place since McGavick’s campaign started gaining steam.

A little fact checking done by a local invesitgative reporter working for the Seattle NBC affiliate, Robert Mak, shows that the great, great granddaughter of the founder of Safeco Insurance owns only 50 shares out of an outstanding 119.2 million shares available. A pittance, and proof that the anti-McGavick left has had to dig deep to find an angry shareholder because, since McGavick’s time in “The Big Chair”, Safeco’s stock price has risen 118%.

Eric Earling at Sound Politics has some more facts and numbers for you to be impressed by.

As can be expected by anyone looking at the facts, the McGavick campaign has responded to the suit by calling it what it is “a politically motivated character attack” . Cantwell can’t beat him on the issues, so they have to try and get his finances locked up via court order.

Not that this is the first time Goldstein has played scummy politics. Goldstein was also the guy who first publicised a story about members of the family of an opponent of Goldy’s darling County Executive, Ron ‘Tax to the Max’ Sims, calling the opponent incompetent and a liar.

I know that everything goes in politics, but when you have to connive people to make basesless accusations, you cannot then go on to claim the high moral ground.

At least they’re enterprising little capitalist potheads

For a while I was a believer in the legalization and sale of narcotics by the government.

Then I grew up and realized that the inept bureacracy that is the government (be it federal, state or county) would never be able to under-sell or out-market the druggies.

Craigslist becomes a place for pot peddlers

The classified-advertising Web site craigslist has become popular in recent years with young, tech-savvy city dwellers seeking apartments, jobs and for-sale items.

But it’s also being used as an Information Age black market for some Seattle-area marijuana dealers.

“I’m not too concerned about getting caught,” said Eric, a Bellevue man in his early 30s who peddles pot online through craigslist.

Local and federal law enforcement officials said they’re aware dealers like Eric are turning to craigslist and other Web sites to sell pot, but the amounts sold are generally so small they’re not very concerned.

I wonder if they’ll ship it to you UPS or if you have to pick it up?

Just a friendly reminder

Everyone here (especially if you’re in Washington State) is registered to vote, right?

Estate tax item secures spot on state ballot

A measure to repeal the state’s new estate tax has secured a spot on the November ballot, elections officials announced Wednesday.

Last month, sponsors submitted nearly 400,000 voter signatures for Initiative 920, exceeding the 225,000 valid signatures needed to qualify for the ballot, as well as the cushion that is required to cover duplicate or invalid signatures.

A check of about 12,000 randomly selected voter signatures showed an invalidation rate of about 15.5 percent, much less than the error rate threshold of 25 percent that the office had calculated.

“Death should not be a taxable event,” said sponsor Dennis Falk of Fox Island, who predicted success at the polls.

“The voters will turn out because this is a nonpartisan issue. It is an issue of fairness.”

The Democratic-controlled Legislature imposed the new tax last year after the state Supreme Court threw out the old system. The revenue, estimated at about $100 million a year, is tied to a special education account to boost higher education and to maintain voter-mandated class size limits.

Amazingly, those “Special Accounts” always seem to dribble off into the general fund. Yet another reason to vote for repeal.

Your Opinion Requested

First of all, thankee to everyone who stopped by with grilling tips and tasty flavors for when beef meets fire.

Today, I would like your opinion as to whether the left’s refusal to believe any other point of view about what happened in Qana, Lebanon than that of Hezbollah’s is just knee jerk anti-Israelism, in that they truly believe Israel purposly targeted a building they knew to be filled with only women and children (and oddly, no men) ?

This isn’t even the good news

Really, it isn’t.

Senators OK more coastal drilling

The Senate voted Tuesday to open 8.3 million acres of federal waters in the central Gulf of Mexico to oil and gas drilling — setting up a confrontation with the House, which wants even more drilling in waters now off-limits.

Supporters of the Senate measure said it would be a major step toward producing more domestic energy and forcing down natural- gas prices, which have soared in recent years.

The Senate approved the measure by a vote of 71-25.

The good news, friends and neighbors, is that the House leadership wants nearly double that amount and the Senate will begin negotiations with the House in Spetember.

Remember: Only eco-socialists think that “Energy Indepenence” means solar panels and electric cars.

Getting Prepared: Part 1

Co-Worker and RNS reader, Paul, emailed me these rather interesting photos of emergency bunkers in Switzerland.

From photographer, Leo Fabrizio:

For over four years, I have developed a photographic documentary work on Swiss fortified constructions – bunkers. Each element of these photographs has a relation with Switzerland and particularly the mountain landscape that is an inherent part of our identity. The bunkers are a integral part of a finely developed popular defense military system in Switzerland, a military with historically strong links to the landscape.

After the cold war ended many of the bunkers became obsolete. The tendency is to forget them or even to renounce them, my approach on the contrary, aims to expose them from a new angle. This approach has led me to discover a great number of bunkers, some in remote areas, sometimes difficultly accessible, covering the whole of the Swiss territory. The relations between these basic shaped bunkers and the often-sumptuous landscape surrounds them became an essential part of the study. I looked for the most spectacular bunkers, notable for their camouflage devices, true theatre scenery made with the utmost care. A quality indeed fully Swiss.

Some of them only look like houses built into the hillside. Others look not only formidable, but damn near indistinguishable from the hillside.

Take a looksee. And maybe get an idea of what yours should look like.

Getting Prepared: Part 2

It looks as if Cynthia McKrazy is making preparations for her loss in the upcoming run-off election

A Democratic congresswoman from Georgia is suing The Atlanta Journal-Constitution for libel.

Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney filed charges against the newspaper’s editor Cynthia Tucker and publisher John Mellott for an editorial column that ran in the Sunday July 30 paper about McKinney’s alleged altercation with police, according to All Headline News.

McKinney’s attorney, J.M. Raffauf, said the column describes McKinney whacking a police officer with her cell phone, a charge McKinney denies.

The suit says that other facts were misstated including a reported suggestion by McKinney that President Bush had known about the September 11 terror attacks in advance, and had allowed the plot to unfold so that he and his friends could profit from the resulting wars.

The suits says that McKinney wants an “immediate retraction in writing these false and libelous statements” and “demands that your retraction and correction be accompanied by an editorial in which you specifically repudiate your libelous statements.”

The DANE has all the evidence the AJC will need to get this case thrown out of court.

You’ll remember that when she lost in 2002, her father came up and blamed none other than “The Jews” for her loss.

I expect that we’ll be seeing a replay of 02 here int he next couple weeks, not only for wittle Cyndie’s loss, but also for the case getting tossed.

And just as a supplementory pontification, I can guarantee that we’ll hear nothing from the American Left who are all over a deserving Mel Gibson.
