Look! Up in the sky!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

Nope, its a total lunar eclipse and the west coast will have a front row seat, bay-bay!

Check it out.

Greek Fire

The ancient equivalent of napalm might have been what was used to start the blazes raging through Greece.

Either way, it is charged that arson is responsible for the vast majority of them.

While watching the CBC broadcast of The Prisoner of Azkaban I caught an abbreviated version of their national Sunday evening news show. Their report included information from the Greek natioanl police about how they suspect radical political parties in connection with these fires.

Oddly enough, nowhere else on the Googled news stories that I can find is this mentioned. All the reports that I can find are talking about three arrests (one middle aged guy and two 18 years olds) for a couple of the arsons, and a reward of up to a million Euros for information on any others. This BBC report talks of 32 arrests, but doesn’t mention anything more than that.

However, every report I’m able to find via Google talks about how, because of the Grecian zoning ordinances, forested areas are off limits to building and how the reporters believe it was developers who set the fires. They imply that the developers want this land cleared so they can go to court and claim it and build on it.

50+ forest fires, set almost simultaneously, by developers? Yeah, sounds fishy to me too.

Especially when I hear about some of the lesser political parties are calling for a halt to the special elections set for September 16th.

This’ll be worth keeping an eye on.

To say I was disappointed

Would be an understatement. But everyone makes mistakes.

Last week Roger L. Simon made one, in my book at least, when he said “Sign Me Up” to the idea of a National ID Card.

And you are uneasy again. The government is incompetent, you say. So what? Who said the government should do the work itself? Outsource it to Oracle, Sun Microsystems, some Silicon Valley wizards. The technology of this sort of thing is advancing at a breakneck clip. The side benefit of this is that an advanced high tech card can replace, or at least displace, all those green cards and driver’s licenses we have been using as de facto ID cards and that are so easily counterfeited or stolen. Sure some super-hacker will figure out how to put my fingerprints on your card and vice-versa, but those cases will be nowhere near as common as the shenanigans we deal with now.

As anyone who has kept up with Joe Huffman’s posts on ID cards can attest, the counterfeitors will most likely have their cards done and in circulation before the feds.

File under: Too many links, not enough time.

Just over a week ago, a group of eco-socialists staged a protest at an Israeli owned warehouse in the UK.

Their idea of funny: Taking down the Israeli flag and raising a “palestinian” one.

Pics here at the Gateway Pundit

At least we know where their core moral equivalence ideals are coming from.

If blowing up civilians is OK for the “palestinians” then doing so to save the planet surely seems reasonable in their minds.

Also: Tigerhawk compares Operating Systems to politics and the Insta-man gives us a great quote:

Leftism as Microsoft Vista — promises a lot but doesn’t deliver, and is kind of bossy.

Meanwhile are rightie politics like Linux? You know, fairly efficient, but requiring more work than most people are willing to put in?

Yep

Tell everyone you know who likes Socialized Medicine

That they’d better take up smoking to show their support for those programs.

Thank you for smoking

There are some differences in detail between the Senate and House bills authorizing massive expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), yet the competing plans have this much in common: Some states will be winners, others will be losers, but they’re all going to have to recruit millions of new smokers. This is because both plans depend on an increase in the federal tax on cigarettes, with the House version upping the levy 45 cents and the Senate 61 cents. Unfortunately, economic reality makes clear just how imprudent it is to take such a course.

There are two ways in which this is true. First, raising the federal tax on smokes will decrease sales. Even congressmen know that a higher price for a commodity reduces the number of consumers able to purchase it. The hitch here for SCHIP and the states is that the latter also tax cigarettes, which means they will lose revenue as a result of the federal increase.

Add a higher federal tax to those factors, and it is impossible to envision sufficient revenues to finance SCHIP as Congress intends. So Congress will need millions of new tobacco customers to replace those who quit, die or reduce consumption. At least 9 million new smokers will be needed during the next five years to ensure sufficient revenues to pay for the expanded SCHIP program. And that illustrates yet another law of economic reality — government actions almost always have unintended consequences, and they are usually bad.

Light em if ya got em, single payer advocates.

Coming to a MetroCenter near you

What with every other goofy Euro idea making its way across the pond, it won’t be long until we see something like this in our major cities.

The Dutch drivers’ organisation ANWB is critical of a government plan to force owners of polluting cars to pay higher parking fees. On Tuesday, a spokesman of the Dutch Ministry of the Environment said diesel cars and Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) will soon pay more to park their cars. By contrast, environmentally friendly cars will see their parking costs reduced.

The government is due to discuss the bill next month. If accepted by the parliament, the new law could be put into practise in 2008.

Seattle is already eliminating as much parking as possible within the limits of downtown, making parking hard to find and expensive as hell, and is building parking garages at either end of town, forcing people onto the county’s inept bus system to get around. They have also started a program of making one of the surface level main thoroughfares through the city a “Bus Only” street and have plans for at least one of the others to be as well.

One of the reasons I haven’t been back, except on my employer’s dime, for years.

And as an added item of interest, if you live in an unincorporated part of King County and want a Washington State Concealed Pistol License, as of my last inquiry just a couple months back for a friend, you have to go to the downtown offices of King County Administration for your initial application. Renewals may be handled at a King County Sheriff’s Department Precinct Substation. Something about fingerprints, I do believe.

The Will of the Public

Seems to have been ignored by the local newspapers.

Hit this link and you will find a Letters to the Editor page full of local residents who have no qualms in telling the Seattle Times, who did print the photos as requested by the FBI, albeit a day late, as well as the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, who did not print the photos, just what they think about these cowardly moves.

Yes, the Editor selects just what letters it will print, and so we are not seeing all of the opinions of the populace on this matter here, but to print a page full of reasoned objections to their editorial decisions takes a bit more cojones than the PI seems to have.

RNS Quote of the Day, 08/27/07

From the Reagan Diaries:

Tuesday, June 9 [1981]

…Ended day with an N.S.C. meeting on the [Israeli] bombing of Iraq. P.M. Begin insists the plant was preparing to produce nuclear weapons for use on Israel. If he waited ’til the French shipment of “hot” uranium arrived he couldn’t order the bombing because of the radiation that would be loosed on Baghdad.

I can understand his fear but feel he took wrong option. He should have told us & the French, we could have done something to remove the threat….

[Followed by:]

Wednesday, June 10

More meetings about the Israeli bombing. Under the law I have no choice but to ask Cong. to investigate & see if there has been a violation of the law regarding use of Am. produced planes for offensive purposes. Frankly, if Cong. should decide that I’ll grant a Presidential waiver. Iraq is technically still at war with Israel & I believe they were preparing to build an atom bomb.

Skunked

I came home with nothing from the gun show, which is very odd.

Oh sure, i picked up an original sling for The Hun Bastard, and an aftermarket one for the Israeli Mauser. A couple of steel G3 mags somehow got bought as well, but no new rifles or pistols.

I spent most of the morning there tryign to talk a guy out of his Marlin 1895SS in 45-70, but he was stuck at $50 more than I was willing to go. Oh well, I’ll see him next month, I’m sure.

That and I don’t really need another caliber added to my collection just yet. I’ve already got four pistol calibers to worry about, not counting 22LR and two rifle calibers. Waidaminnit! Only two rifle calibers? Hmm, maybe I do need another?

UPDATE: On the upside, since I didn’t buy anything at the show and was looking for it there, I just finished up buying this for the Israeli Mauser (which I’m sure David will approve of (and which I reallyneed to get a name to)).

In Memorium: The Booty Eulogies

I am sorry that I could not get this to Phil in time for last week, I would have been honored to have my words about John Thomas shown earlier than planned.

I still cannot believe that I will never speak to him again. His soothing voice was always welcome to me, whether it was over the telephone or in person. While his accent was always evident, whenever he would speak in my tongue I would melt.

Though I would have followed him anywhere, would he have allowed me, our wanderings though my home town of Milan always reminded me of how lucky I was to live here.

Someday I will have a memorial erected to John Thomas that will stand in La Scala, where we would always view the opera.

I say “Ciao” to you today John Thomas.

I am sure that when I pass that I will be able to say it to you again.
