Greek Fire

The ancient equivalent of napalm might have been what was used to start the blazes raging through Greece.

Either way, it is charged that arson is responsible for the vast majority of them.

While watching the CBC broadcast of The Prisoner of Azkaban I caught an abbreviated version of their national Sunday evening news show. Their report included information from the Greek natioanl police about how they suspect radical political parties in connection with these fires.

Oddly enough, nowhere else on the Googled news stories that I can find is this mentioned. All the reports that I can find are talking about three arrests (one middle aged guy and two 18 years olds) for a couple of the arsons, and a reward of up to a million Euros for information on any others. This BBC report talks of 32 arrests, but doesn’t mention anything more than that.

However, every report I’m able to find via Google talks about how, because of the Grecian zoning ordinances, forested areas are off limits to building and how the reporters believe it was developers who set the fires. They imply that the developers want this land cleared so they can go to court and claim it and build on it.

50+ forest fires, set almost simultaneously, by developers? Yeah, sounds fishy to me too.

Especially when I hear about some of the lesser political parties are calling for a halt to the special elections set for September 16th.

This’ll be worth keeping an eye on.

I’m surprised they even cited a crime, because that leads to questions like this about who the suspects are, and that’s above your pay grade as a member of the general public!

You can’t handle that type of knowledge!
