That The Wife may be stranger than I am.

While flipping through the upper channels of the cable box, she happened upon the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead. It was about 5 minutes in, where the husband has just been zombified after being bitten by their daughter and he is now focusing his zombie attention on the wife, who is trying to escape out the bathroom window.

The Wife asks: “Would you kill me if I were a zombie?”

I reply: “Hell yes!”

She replies, in full seriousness: “Aww, that’s so sweet.”

I only swore “Until death do us part.” She’s undead, that counts.

The cats at Counting Cats in Zanzibar found a MEMRI video which translated some supposed Islamic scientist on a talk show telling the Saudis exactly how Neil Armstrong discovered, and US government has covered up, that Mecca is “centrally located” on the planet, and is also the source of divine radiation.

Said cats had an opinion about that

I have heard some junk masquerading as science in my time but this takes the biscuit. I have an MSc in Astrophysics and this is just beautifully demented. It is truly in the category Wolfgang Pauli referred to as “not even wrong”. It is a heady mix of muddle, paranoia and nonsense. It’s not even fiskable. The astronomer Fritz Zwicky was a prickly sort who was fond of calling people he disliked “spherical bastards” meaning they were bastards from whatever angle you looked at them. This is spherical bollocks.

After putting on my IQ Protection helmet, I stopped into the HuffPo last night to find just about the dumbest pro-Obama post I’ve seen there in a while

Keli Goff – Obama Has Made History, But Can He Change It?

Yes, you read that correctly.

Was your first reactionary thought “Only if he has a time machine, and if he had one, couldn’t he just make himself President?”, because mine was.

What follows in the article is a healthy smattering of American bashing, calling anyone who doesn’t vote for Obama a racist, etc. And it continues throughout the comments section with people actually admitting that they think voting for Obama will “exorcise the race card from their conscience.”

And speaking of stupid HuffPo comments, they forgot to close the comments on their post about the acquittal of 1st Lieutenant Andrew Grayson of all charges.

Bad mistake. The opener:

Justice does not exist in the US. I am not surprised by this news, but I am appalled that certain members of the US military and many members of firms such as Blackwater can commit premeditated murder, rape and other atrocities in MY name, and NOT be held accountable in any way. How can any of these ‘people’, if you want to call them that, sleep at night? They are not even human – that’s how . . .

Disgusting is not a strong enough word to describe this situation.

I would use the same sentiment of his last sentence to describe the entirety of his comment.

The article quickly left the front page in short order.

A pathetic attempt at revisionist history

Back on the 23rd of May, the Wizbang blog posted about Pat Buchanan’s ignorant attempt to paint the pre-WWII Nazi Germany as not as bad as history would make them out to be.

He seems to have some twisted belief that Hitler didn’t want to invade Poland. That he just wanted them to cede Gdansk/Dandizg to Germany so that his mantra of “all German speaking peoples must be part of Germany” would be fulfilled and that if Poland had done that, he would have been happy and stopped then and there.

Methinks he has missed out on just about the rest of ol’ Adolph’s rhetoric.

I don’t get to read much of the blogosphere during the week, as I only have my lunch hour to do so in. Anything more than a dozen or so sites and a handful of online newspapers during that hour has to be done either before I leave for work or after I get home, which cuts into home time so that The Wife doesn’t become a blog-widow.

When I find something interesting, I cut and paste the url into a word doc with a snippet to tell me what the link goes to, and then bring it home and post on it. I labeled the link to that url “Fucking Buchanan”, because that word and his name always go together whether I’m speaking or just thinking on the topic (I grew up the son of a pig headed Buchananite), and I’m still at a complete loss as to why this man is still taken seriously on the national stage.

Luckily for my sanity, I can go here and read as Victor Davis Hansen wonder the same damn thing.

Because redistributing your tax dollars via FEMA isn’t good enough

You know that living in a place called Tornado Alley or one that is pounded year after year by hurricanes will raise your home owner’s insurance rates. You, as a free thinking person decide to either not live there or to put tooth to leather and pay the extra coin for your choice.

But not any more, if the Democrats in Congress have anything to say about it

As hurricane season begins, Democrats in Congress want to nationalize a chunk of the insurance business that covers major storm-damage claims.

The proposal — backed by giant insurers Allstate Corp. and State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co., as well as Florida lawmakers — focuses on “reinsurance,” the policies bought by insurers themselves to protect against catastrophic losses. The proposal envisions a taxpayer-financed reinsurance program covering all 50 states, which would essentially backstop the giant insurers in case of disaster.

The program could save homeowners roughly $500 apiece in annual premiums in Florida, according to an advocacy group backed by Allstate and State Farm, the largest writers of property insurance in the U.S.

I hate to say it, but the green-weenies and I both agree that this is a bad idea, though for different reasons.

I don’t like my tax dollars being spent in making the lives of others more comfortable (unless it buys AC for soldiers in the Sandbox). The eco-socialists don’t like the way residential and commercial property development would spike with cheap insurance rates (and they say that “the market” doesn’t work).

Either way, this is bad juju.

Members of extremist groups have have not “clearly” committed a crime would receive therapy and counselling under new Government plans to “deradicalise” religious fanatics.

The Home Office is to announce an extra £12.5 million to support new initiatives to try to stop extremism spreading.

The central element of the Home Office plan is a new national “deradicalisation” programme that would persuade converts to violent and extremist causes to change their views.

First of all, how do you not “clearly” commit an act of terrorism? Usually either the burn marks or the jihad death video are dead giveaways. And if they haven’t “clearly” committed the crime, just how do you sentence someone for it?

Secondly, and as Johnathon Pearce alluded to at SamizdataUK, I believe that this is much better therapy.

The Soundboard: Decks and Drums and Rock and Roll Edition

As David mentions below, today’s opening track is Bond related.

In 1998 The Propellerheads dropped a bomb on the world in the form of their album with the same title as that of this post. And if you had a television during that year, you’ve probably heard them and Shirley Bassey selling Jaguars with a track of this disk.

But that was just one of the multiple excellent tunes from the DnDnRnR album, and for those of you who haven’t bought this record, I would like to introduce you to a couple more today.

The first, is their remake of the John Barry composed song

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

It’s eight minutes long, so it’ll be a bit much for some to download, but it is worth it.

But before David got the hankering to go all out bond today, he also suggested the album’s opening track, and with all the political happenings, I think it fits.

Some interesting sampling in that one. And only seven minutes long.
