There is a new reason to rejoice: Sarah Silverman is back on the market!
“Need” would be a good word here.
At 140 pounds, the American-made, $7450 Zero X weighs in about 100 pounds lighter than a typical 250 cc dirt bike. The weight savings come from the green wheelie machine’s diminutive size and 6061-T6 aluminum frame, which tips the scales at a feathery 18 pounds.
Between those rails sits the easily removable, 40-pound, lithium-manganese spinal battery pack. “That’s our secret sauce,†Zero’s Saiki says of the power source, which he says can recharge in 2 hours for 2 hours of driving or a 40-mile range, depending on conditions. The unit is fully recyclable and can be swapped for another one in a mere 30 seconds. The 58-volt, 2.2 kwh pack is a proprietary design with 168 cylindrical cells, each with its own heat sync for cooling. The pack itself costs around $3000 and is built to last about six years, or 600 full-depth charging cycles.
The battery supplies power to a 17,400 watt, 23-hp electric motor, which is actually very similar to the units in many neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) like the GEM. The motor spins a fine-pitch, lightweight chain hooked to a big, 72-tooth sprocket at the rear wheel. The larger the sprocket, the quicker the acceleration—but more on that later. Speaking of wheels, the rims have a special 20-in. hollow design to save weight, wrapped with 75/90-20 tires. Size-wise, the wheel and tire combination is essentially halfway between a mountain bike and a motocross bike. And Saiki says just about any bicycle shop can service the wheels, tires and brakes.
“Ultimate Scout Bike” would be a good set of words to follow the one mentioned above.
Why?
But the speed of the Zero X may not be as important to some as its silence. We can imagine a casual trail ride on a pair of these bikes where both riders can not only hear the sounds of the wilderness around them, but also carry on a conversation as they ride. Try that on a two-stroke.
Mmm, yes. Permalinking this for future reference.
The Nutroots “support the troops” by wanting to “bring them home”.
So why won’t he go visit those he claims to “support”?
A coalition of military groups is planning a nationally televised town-hall-style meeting with the presidential candidates near Fort Hood, Tex., the largest active-duty military installation in the country. But so far, only Senator John McCain of Arizona, the presumptive Republican nominee, has agreed to attend.
CBS has agreed to broadcast the meeting live from 9 to 11 p.m. Eastern time on Monday, Aug. 11. The candidates would face questions directly from an audience of 6,000 people, made up of veterans, service members and military families from the base.
Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, the presumptive Democratic nominee, has not agreed to participate.
……
Carissa Picard, managing director of the Fort Hood Presidential Town Hall Consortium, said she had suggested Aug. 11 and asked the campaign to suggest other dates if that was not convenient, but after several conversations she had not been able to work anything out.
“I’m having extreme difficulty getting the Obama campaign to commit to this event, and we do not understand why,†said Ms. Picard, whose husband is deployed in Iraq. “We made it very clear to them that if they would commit to the event, we would work with them on dates.â€
Ms. Picard, you might as well give up now. Answering unscripted questions that deserve honest answers isn’t something Obama does.
Let the man just eat his waffle and spout some stump practiced talking points to his sycophants. Haven’t you heard, he’s the Obamessiah.

First of all, I’d like to thank all those who came back after seeing the pre-announcement on Thursday/Friday. Please do not confuse the mockery of pomp and fluff for actual pomp and fluff (I will inform you all immediately when I am taking myself too seriously).
At this time I would like to announce that I will be building up an AR type lower receiver (or six) in the not too distant future.
Making a stripped lower such as this

Look more like this

And I would like some feedback as to how many folks would be interested in a detailed photoblogging of said build here. If I get enough folks, I may even take video along with the pics.
Also, I’d like to let you all know that I have turned the ignition switch into the ON position for the “Phil’s Co-Worker AR Building Club”.
The premise is as follows: They go buy a stripped AR type lower, the guts and the stock of their choosing, and I instruct them on how to assemble it all together and point them in the direction of the upper of their choice to mate with their new creation.
And at this time, I am extending the offer to all the local-to-me folks in the gunnie-sphere. For the price of a simple gentleman’s agreement (aka: Free), I will meet up with you and show you the whowhatsit on building a solid AR lower. My tools, your place, your hands.
The Gentleman’s Agreement (or Lady and Gentleman Agreement, as the case may be) is as follows: A handshake deal that if you ever decide to sell said lower/firearm, I’d like the right of first refusal.
For those not living in the PacNW, if I can get a decent sized number of folks who are interested in building one, I wouldn’t object to holding a dealio Friday evening at the Gunblogger’s Rendezvous in Reno this October. Again, I’ll bring the tools and let you test your build on my 5.56 upper during the Saturday range session. For you Californistan residents, I think we can figure out a way to build up CA legal lowers relatively easily. This would all be dependent upon my being able to secure a location other than my hotel room.
I can tell you quite positively that if you build one, you’ll be able to build a dozen of them. And you’ll probably want to. This mind-numbingly simple process will help you gain the knowledge of exactly how the gun functions making malfunction troubleshooting easy as well as allow you the opportunity to do your own maintenance and repairs.
So what say ye?
(more on the method behind my madness below the fold)
Likewise, a negative on blood running down the streets.
The Chicago pro-civil rights rally at the Thompson Center went off beautifully last Friday.

The Heartless Libertarian’s wife is an member of the Military police. While on duty a week or so ago, she found a pair of cats
Mrs: “They still don’t have names. I thought about Heckler and Koch, or Mosin and Nagant…”
HL: “If you wanted to name them Heckler and Koch, they’d have to be aloof and arrogant.”
Pause
Mrs: “They’re CATS.”
I don’t care who you are, that’s funny right there.
Btw, the settled names are Sig and Mauser.
I might have gone for Paul and Wilhelm myself.
Your suggestions are welcome in the comments.
In the past, here at RNS, we’ve noted few examples of judges ignoring all scientific evidence and siding with an environmental group to shut down cattle grazing, or what have you.
Oddly enough, it looks as though the logic and reason of like-minded citizens such as ourselves has finally won through
An 11-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled it’s improper for federal judges to act as scientists when weighing in on disputed U.S. Forest Service timber projects.
The court said environmentalists had asked it “to act as a panel of scientists that instructs the Forest Service how to validate its hypotheses regarding wildlife viability, chooses among scientific studies in determining whether the Forest Service has complied with the underlying Forest Plan, and orders the agency to explain every possible scientific uncertainty,” Judge Milan D. Smith, Jr., wrote. “This is not a proper role for a federal appellate court.”
Environmental groups The Lands Council, based in Spokane, Wash., and the Wild West Institute, in Missoula, Mont., contended the Forest Service’s logging plan exceeded what was needed to restore the forest’s historic character and claimed logging would harm the region’s ecosystem for species including small, migratory owls.
So the scientists at the USFS spent taxpayer dollars to study a plan that would gauge the impact of admitting commercial logging into a burned section of the Idaho Panhandle National Forest.
These scientists came to the conclusion that logging there would not cause significant harm to the ecosystem.
The eco-socialists, not liking the scientific findings, asked the federal court system to make the USFS rethink their study. The 9th Circuit, having finally seen the error of their previous decisions in this case, told the eco-socialists to “Listen to the Scientists”, which is what they are demanding everyone do in regards to their global warming death cult beliefs, but apparently isn’t good enough advice on something as small as a burned timber sale.
This decision came down last Thursday, and it looks as though some jackass didn’t get the message.
A federal judge has overturned a decision by the U.S. Forest Service to allow oil and gas drilling near a forest and a river in Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula.
U.S. District Judge David Lawson of Detroit ruled Thursday the agency had acted “arbitrarily and capriciously” in 2005 by giving Savoy Energy LP of Traverse City a permit to drill an exploratory well near the Au Sable River’s south branch.
The proposed wellhead would be located in the Huron-Manistee National Forest about three-tenths of a mile from the Mason Tract, a 4,679-acre wilderness area prized by anglers and other outdoor recreationists.
I wonder if someone needs to check the honorable judge Lawson’s Caebla’s Club Card to see if he buy much tackle and line?
Either way, Judge Lawson needs to remember that he wears a Black robe, and that scientists wear White coats, that, while they may be similar in cut and shape, do signify different areas of expertise.
Maybe if we let him call himself a “Law Scientist” he will let the findings of folks who have studied large amounts of actual hard science to earn the title “Biologist” alone?

Booty’s been scarce since the late Prof. disappeared from these pages. All that’s left seems to be this pale imitation.
Mapjack. Like Google Earth but much faster (at least for me), more user-friendly, and, well, it’s just awesome. You can zoom around to see the sights in exotic cities like San Francisco or Pattaya, or even Yosemite or Lake Tahoe.
