Immortality

My first exposure to this sort of thing was as a third-grader in San Diego. When the family would go on trips to Tijuana, I’d dutifully tail along, bored by all the shops with nothing of interest to me — until I fatefully looked up one day and realized that almost all of them had picture rails tucked up high, next to the ceiling, and on those rails were….

velvet paintings of nude women. Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed every trip to TJ after that.

There were velvet Elvises, Hendrixes, and the like too, but I ignored those.

Now that’s funny right there

Not only did Obama’s team piss off a bunch of supporters by sending them text messages “announcing” Biden at 3 am — 3 am! where have we heard that one before? — after it was old news by several hours, but also…

they’re probably pissing off the rest of their supporters who, like me, JUST GOT THE TEXT MESSAGE NOW. Saturday afternoon. 12:32 pm Pacific time.

From: 62262
Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee. Watch the first Obama-Biden rally live at 3pmET on www.BarackObama.com. Spread the word!

Can we say FUBAR? Suddenly I’m not so worried about the competence of the alleged Obama political juggernaut.

More Biden

From Talkleft:

Have I mentioned that Joe Biden “‘wholeheartedly supported’ the actions of federal agents at Waco and reportedly “visibly sneered at witnesses in Senate hearings who questioned agents’ acts.“

OH JOE BIDEN NO.

Weekend Poetry

courtesy of ExistingThing, here’s some Grantland Rice to get you going with your weekend tasks and chores.

Hold to the course, though the storms are about you;
Stick to the road where the banner still flies;
Fate and his legions are ready to rout you–
Give ’em both barrels–and aim for their eyes.

Life’s not a rose bed, a dream or a bubble,
A living in clover beneath cloudless skies;
And Fate hates a fighter who’s looking for trouble,
So give ‘im both barrels–and shoot for the eyes.

Fame never comes to the loafers and sitters,
Life’s full of knots in a shifting disguise;
Fate only picks on the cowards and quitters,
So give ’em both barrels–and aim for the eyes.

OH JOE BIDEN NO

I got what I wanted — Biden for Obama’s VP.

Good times.

Might I suggest a meme? In honor of the popular “Oh John Ringo No” —

“OH JOE BIDEN NO”
sounds like something we’ll be using here frequently over the next few months. Every time he just can’t keep himself from saying that one last thing that goes a bit too far.

Like “My ancestors came up from the coal mines of Pennsylvania.” (1987, plagiarizing Neil Kinnock’s speech.) OH JOE BIDEN NO.

Or, “I think I have a much higher I.Q. than you do” followed by a string of falsehoods inflating his academic credentials. OH JOE BIDEN NO.

Or this:

Or this:

OH JOE BIDEN NO!

Or, of course, relevant for gun owners, this from “I’m the original author of the ‘Assault Weapons Ban'” Joe Biden:

OH JOE BIDEN NO.

Obama, Bye

obys.jpgAndrew Sullivan notes the Obamaniacs’ pre-reaction to the idea of pro-war, pro-Clinton Evan Bayh as his running mate. Sounds like fun times ahead.

It would be hard to fuck up Barack Obama’s brand any worse than picking John McCain’s honorary co-chairman of the Committee for the Liberation of Iraq. We really shouldn’t have to say anything more than that.

More importantly:

Gun Policy: Bayh received a very low score from the NRA, and the highest possible score from The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence

Hmm

When I type “Pawlenty” into my Yahoo-powered NRA-ILA search box, I get back this:

Nothing found for “pawlenty”

Do they know something we don’t? Nothing wrong with a McCain-Pawlenty ticket in my book except that it’s kind of boring and safe. OTOH, he’s got a great NRA rating, so that’s good.

The Great Brain is Back

Many of you, I suspect, read the Great Brain series of books as a kid. The adventures of the conniving, swindling smart kid T.D. Fitzgerald were fun, but the real value of the series was the view of small-town life in the late 1890s. The books are real gems, and if you have young boys you could do worse than to get them hooked on reading with this series.

For thirty years I have read and re-read all seven books in the series, not knowing that there was an eighth! Yes, after John D. Fitzgerald’s death, some additional Great Brain stories were found in his notes. All too few, but enough for a short book, and The Great Brain is Back is a delight like the rest of them, and a fitting conclusion to the series. Diane deGroat’s illustrations are modern but with enough of the Mercer Mayer feel to compensate for his absence as well (he illustrated all the previous books).
And now that you’re all grown up, you really should read J.D. Fitzgerald’s original stories of Adenville and the Fitzgerald family, written for adults: Papa Married a Mormon and Mamma’s Boarding House. They’re wonderful.

Camino del Rey

If you have already seen this famous video, watch it again. If you haven’t seen it, you’re in for a treat. Like a first-person shooter, but with a trance soundtrack and bloodcurdling heights.

Added to my Things to Do whenever I visit Spain: go there and do this.
