My first exposure to this sort of thing was as a third-grader in San Diego. When the family would go on trips to Tijuana, I’d dutifully tail along, bored by all the shops with nothing of interest to me — until I fatefully looked up one day and realized that almost all of them had picture rails tucked up high, next to the ceiling, and on those rails were….

velvet paintings of nude women. Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed every trip to TJ after that.

There were velvet Elvises, Hendrixes, and the like too, but I ignored those.
