Moving the furniture around a bit

As you have probably already noticed, things have been realigned here at RNS.

I’d like to thank Craig at MTPolitics for taking some time to help me get some front page issues fixed.

You’ll also notice on the side bar that the search box is now up top for easier searches and that David’s links are now no longer in the basement.

We may not have done as a complete change as first Uncle and then Caleb did, but I think it looks much better.

Let me know what you think.

Texas Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and 46 other senators have asked for Senate floor time for House-passed legislation to roll back District of Columbia gun laws.

In a letter Thursday to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid , D-Nev., the group asked him to call up the bill before the end of the 110th Congress.

“We ask you to ensure that D.C. residents do not have to wait any longer to realize their constitutional rights,” Hutchison and her allies wrote. The letter was signed by five Democrats.

Pro-gun-rights lawmakers say the District government is not abiding by a June Supreme Court decision in District of Columbia v. Heller that voided the city’s handgun ban. The D.C. City Council promulgated temporary laws in July, and another set of temporary laws Sept. 16, even as city officials work on new permanent ones.

Have I gone insane?

Leftist blogs are still carrying on in their Rapture. Even this morning they are carrying on about how McCain is still proud of his vote for deregulation. Likewise, they are wailing to anyone who will listen about Lindsey Graham.

I may have other disagreements with both McCain and Graham, but deregulation isn’t one of them.

Why is it that even those who are supposedly intelligent on the topic of financial markets among the media and the left are on their soapboxes complaining about someone who passed a law instead of railing against those who used said law as a gloryhole?

I know that politics is politics, but getting into discussions on the topic with them is impossible. That a small number of someones may have abused their positions is beyond their realm of thought, but on the other hand, blaming those who removed a useless restriction are, in their own words, in need of prosecution?

I do my best to open my mind up wide enough to try and see their point of view, and not only do I get derided for asking a simple question, but my brain falls out.

Those anti-traffic camera folks have just about as bad a luck

Police in Scottsdale, Arizona are continuing to crack down on those who disagree with the city’s photo enforcement policies. Jason Shelton, 36, was arrested yesterday at around 6pm while videotaping more than a dozen activists who peacefully stood on the red light camera-equipped street corner of Shea Boulevard waving signs. The signs described automated ticketing machines as “scameras” and urged passing motorists to visit CameraFraud.com, the group responsible for organizing the event.

“Bring your favorite sign expressing your views on the fraudulent cameras, or use one of ours,” the announcement for Thursday’s protest stated. “Be ready to have some fun with some passionate citizens who care.”

Scottsdale Police cared enough to send four undercover officers in a pair of unmarked white GMC vans to monitor and videotape the event. According to eyewitness accounts provided to TheNewspaper, Shelton at one point walked over to the vans assuming they were driven by employees of Redflex, the private Australian company that operates speed camera vans for the state. As soon as Shelton got near with his camera, irate officers wearing jeans and military-style ballistic vests leaped from the vans to arrest Shelton who was armed only with a cardboard sign and a camera.

Last month, Scottsdale Police arrested Shelton on the charge of “obstructing of government operations” because he videotaped a similar protest involving a Redflex speed camera van.

Scottsdale PD is now saying that they went to the protest specifically to arrest Mr. Shelton because of an eBay scam. Anyone want to bet he was selling photo radar defeating items?

Washington State fired up their photo radar machines along I-5, between Chehalis/Centralia and the city of Vancouver, just across the river from Portland, OR. No stats are out yet, but I figure the DOT/WSP will be out bragging about the number of tickets issued and/or the amount of “revenue” generated around Thanksgiving time.

All Washingtonians need to be keeping an eye on their mail from now on. Some jurisdictions are treating pictures which only give them a partial plate number as the lottery and sending tickets out to any vehicle with similar numbers/letters in the hope that someone would pay the fine.

In other Washington State transportation news, those in charge of public transportation in the tri-county area will lie to you. Repeatedly.

The Washington Policy Center blog has analyzed to recent press releases from Sound Transit and found both of them stretched the truth more than just a bit.

Sound Transit claimed that Proposition 1 on this November’s ballot will reduce CO2 emissions somewhere between 0.71% and 1.11%.

Unfortunately, they failed to factor in the emissions put out by the buses and trains in the ST fleet.

The next lie was when ST claimed to have 10 million riders.

Maybe it is because they don’t have a statistician on staff, but their terminology is incorrect and misleading: They had 10 million trips.

As the WPC blog points out: Trips do not equal Riders.

And no, I don’t want them to go off and hire a proper statistician. Firstly, because it dumb mistake like this give me blogging material, and secondly, because I don’t want my money wasted on yet another bean-counter for a very self-promoting agency.

A Difference

There is The Nanny State, and then there is The Panty State.

Do not confuse the two. Women who have taken too many “Women’s Studies” course and feel that they need to call themselves “Feminists” don’t like the latter one.

An Australian pub offering free drinks to women who remove their underwear and display it to patrons and staff will be investigated by alcohol licencing regulators, authorities said on Thursday.

The Saint Hotel in Melbourne has promised a “No Undie Sundie” event over the coming weekend, where woman who remove their underwear and hang it above the bar will receive A$50 ($39) worth of free drinks.

Women who flash their bras and underwear to staff also get free drinks, the pub said, in a promotion that women’s protection groups said was “almost an invitation to sexual assault”.

Maybe under The Caliphate it is considered an invitation, but last time I checked, OZ wasn’t under the rule of one. Not to mention that those types aren’t allowed in bars in the first place.

Also, what kind of sorry bastard thinks that a woman flashing her underwear at the bartender is a “thumbs up” signal for rape?

Jeff at Alphecca points to an article where the reporter must have missed the meaning of the words “Gun Show”

Among the assault rifles and razor-sharp throwing stars for sale at a recent Freeman Coliseum gun show, fierce loyalty to John McCain also was on display. Lit by flashing red lights and imprinted on buttons, his name greeted browsers at the booths of dealers who consider this year’s presidential contest a momentous occasion.

“This election is the most important election in my lifetime,” said Sheryl Loughlin, a 62-year-old Cibolo resident who wore a “No B.O.” (Barack Obama) button high on her shirt.

And guns were ever-present.

No shit! Guns at a Gun Show! Why the nerve of some people!

I was expecting to be able to stock up on my needlepoint supplies and instead I got a bunch of rednecks clinging to their guns!

Next up, David Hardy finds stats on Florida’s falling crime rate, and then points to a very likely cause

The number of Floridians with permission to pack heat has jumped nearly 50 percent in three years.

In 2005, one year before the state Legislature’s decision to provide anonymity to people holding concealed weapons licenses, there were 347,350 active permits statewide.

Now, that number has swelled to about 520,000.

Oddly enough, despite the best efforts of the gun pushers at the NRA, blood still isn’t running in the streets, even though one in every 35 people in Florida has a carry permit.

It is almost as though there is such a thing as a responsible gun owner.

Update to the Washington State Lead Ban

Gunpundit got a comment from Kathy Davis, head of the Washington State Department of Ecology Lead CAP (Chemical Action Plan), and she stated

Ecology’s plan does NOT recommend any new ban on lead ammunition. The agency wants to reduce lead in the environment to protect the health of people, and wildlife. The plan proposes working with hunters and shooters on a voluntary, educational program to promote the use of non-toxic alternatives to lead. Read the lead plan and our fact sheet about how the plan address ammunition on Ecology’s webpage.

Now, like Murdoc, I am skeptical of the end goal of this CAP. None of the examples named in the .pdf file had an outcome that would be considered “favorable” for gunnies.

Which is why I urge you all to contact your the government officials involved in this and your elected representatives to try and get us another meeting where we can at least get a verbal promise, and hopefully one in writing as well, that this will not turn into a ban on lead projectiles.

If they can do it in Olympia, they’ll try to do it in Sacramento, Salem, Boise, Helena, Cheyenne, Denver, Carson City and Phoenix.
