RNS Quote of the Day: 12/11/08

NPR will be laying off 7% of its employees because of a budget shortfall.

While commend them for not just going back to mommy and asking for more funds, do we really NEED NPR for anything?

We’ve got over a half a dozen other alphabet stations singing the Democratic talking points on the hour every hour, why do we need one more brand infatuated with He Who Shall Not Be Middle Named (unless it is He at His inauguration)?

Here is the story as published at the HuffPo, which is where we get our QotD.

In our city, the NPR local news “partner” is our corporate owned newspaper! So much for independent media.

Since when is something that is government financed “independent”?

Isn’t that like calling the USMC “independent”?

They saw the $$$’s

And just like the leeches they are, now the SEIU wants your tax dollars handed over to them.

In those nice cloth bags with the dollar signs on the side like in the cartoons, if at all possible!

The powerful Service Employees International Union has decided that, because of the $700 billion financial-system bailout, it wants to organize bank workers.

In an e-mail dated November 12 and obtained exclusively by CNN, a member of SEIU’s Private Equity Project outlined initial discussions to organize bank workers “since the banking industry is now being infused with billions of taxpayer dollars.”

The e-mail was written by SEIU’s Inga Skippings to the director of the Washington office of the Association of Community Organizing for Reform Now (ACORN), a longtime ally and partner of the union.

The SEIU and ACORN: Two Wastes that Work Great Together.

If your definition of “great” is milking anyone accosiated with them for every penny not glued to the floor.

The NEA will have something to say about this

The schools are there to teach the little youngins to rely on the police for all their defensive needs.

Not to fight for themselves

Georgetown officials are considering a plan that would have fourth- and fifth-graders trained to help fight off an armed gunman should one enter their elementary school.

Why, these kids might just grow up to have minds of their own or something!

They wouldn’t have heard from me

If an H&K G36K accidentally winds up on my doorstep, I’ll be calling in sick to work so I can find a good place to hide it

When the parcel arrived by courier, grandmother Catherine Roots prepared to unwrap the horse harness she had been eagerly awaiting.
Instead, she was left shocked and frightened by the contents, fearing she had been caught up in some gangland arms deal.
The box contained a Heckler and Koch assault rifle, which was supposed to have gone to a police headquarters two miles away.

It went astray when someone at the suppliers got the final letter of the postcode wrong.
Mrs Roots called police and two armed officers arrived ‘within minutes’ to collect the gun.
Dorset police, who have apologised several times, assured Mrs Roots that it could not fire bullets.
It had been converted to produce an infrared beam for training exercises at their headquarters in Winfrith, near Dorchester.

I don’t care. I’d find a way to convert it back.

The cops play finders-keepers. But I playit better.

RNS Quote of the Day: 12/10/08

Head up ass.

Full speed ahead (in an electric car)

The price of a gallon of regular gasoline, which peaked at over $4 last summer, is now about $1.75. This means that today’s drivers are enjoying the equivalent of 1980 prices, according to the Energy Information Administration. Meanwhile, the average per-gallon tax on gasoline is about 40 cents, including state levies. The federal portion of that has held steady at 18.4 cents since 1993; thus, in real terms, consumers have gotten a significant gas tax cut over the past 15 years. This tax should have been indexed to inflation long ago.

Congress should enact a steep, inflation-indexed hike in gas taxes, one big enough to alter consumer incentives and habits permanently. This would take back some of the de facto economic stimulus consumers have received from the recent drop in gas prices, and it would be a hard sell politically.

Washington Post Editorial Department – 12/08/08

Because that is exactly what we need right now; to slow down the economy more.

Catch 22

So long as the 22 you’re catching isn’t Class 3

We can’t have machine guns because they are unusual because they are regulated by the government, they are regulated because they are unusual, they are unusual because they are regulated, they are regulated because they’re unusual.

Stop thinking that loop right now or you’ll go insane.

Good for you, Oregon

I wonder where I can find stats like this for my home state?

More Oregonians will get concealed weapons permits in 2008 than in any year since tallies began in 2000.

The Oregon State Police say sheriffs reported 115,600 permits for the first 11 months of 2008, with estimates of another 10,000 expected in December.

The total for 2007 was 97,227 permits, the highest previous annual number.

Somebody show these numbers to the Bradys and tell them the NRA lost this election.

Turn that frown upside down

Just don’t do it in the offices of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is restricting glasses, hats, scarves — and even smiles — in driver’s license photographs.

The new rules imposed last month are needed so that facial recognition software can spot fraudulent license applications, BMV officials told The Times of Northwest Indiana.

The software compares applicants’ new photographs with old photographs on file to protect them from identity fraud, said BMV commissioner Ron Stiver.

“We take very seriously our responsibility to help protect the personal identity of Hoosiers, and the employment of this innovative technology is yet another important step forward in doing just that,” Stiver said.

What a crock. Why are these restrictions always “for the protection of the citizens”? Can’t they just say that in the not too distant future, after an appropriately scary event, they’re going to employ facial recognition software in the public square like they have in the UK?

In case you missed it the last time I posted about ID photos, my WASDL has me in this pose

Because, really, who’d give a ticket to that charming a fellow?

It also gets giggles at the bank and other places where ID is necessary.
