Oh, ignore me, will you?

One of the ominous/fun (take your pick) things about Microsoft Outlook is the ability to track what happens to an email you send.

For instance, I sent this apparently effective email to Cooper Firearms a while back during the late unpleasantness. I got a very quick response from Dan Pickett. However, I also cc’d Dan Cooper himself, and, well, I just now received this:

I don’t really mind. I think he got the message, don’t you?

(incidentally, I told Dan Pickett after he responded to my email that I was satisfied and would resume lusting after Cooper rifles and making plans to buy several. I’m true to my word — I’m currently focusing for obvious reasons on getting a few more paperless rifles, but I’m pretty close to being done with that and will turn to saving for my first Cooper.)

Transportation officials in Texas are scrambling to prevent hackers from changing messages on digital road signs after one sign in Austin was altered to read, “Zombies Ahead.”

Chris Lippincott, director of media relations for the Texas Department of Transportation, confirmed that a portable traffic sign at Lamar Boulevard and West 15th Street, near the University of Texas at Austin, was hacked into during the early hours of Jan. 19.

Well, they are talking about Austin. I know there are some brain dead mofos there.

A Human Rights Tragedy

A Palestinian human rights> activist and journalist who used to work for the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem has been executed by Hamas on charges of “collaboration” with Israel, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip said over the weekend.

They identified the man as Haidar Ghanem, 46, of Rafah.

They pointed out that Ghanem, who was a field researcher for B’Tselem, had been sentenced to death by a Palestinian Authority court in 2002 after being found guilty of passing on information to Israel that later resulted in the elimination of Fatah gunmen.

Ghanem, according to the Palestinians, was among dozens of suspected “collaborators” who were executed by Hamas during Operation Cast Lead.

Oh, and that sound you hear is that of Human Rights Watch stuffing their heads in the sand.

More violence from the Save the Planet crowd

Going green was a cause she could really sink her teeth into.

The frantic passenger who bit a veteran driver’s arm was upset that his bus wasn’t a hybrid, he said Thursday.

“She came on the bus, and she said she waited more than an hour for a hybrid,” said MTA driver Peter Williams, 42. “I said, ‘I’m not in control of what bus is assigned to me.'”

Williams, a dad of two who is in the Navy Reserves, plans to take a little time off after Wednesday’s bizarre attack on an uptown M104 bus.

The woman, Shelia Bolar, 49, started hollering at Williams soon after she boarded the Broadway bus on the upper West Side.

When her rant was done, she she grabbed his arm.

“Miss, don’t touch me while I’m operating the bus,” Williams warned Bolar.

At W. 79th St., Williams let passengers off and gestured to a dispatcher he called for help.

“That’s when she bit me. … I couldn’t believe it.”

Bolar chomped through a jacket, a sweater and a thick shirt, causing a bruise and swelling but not breaking skin.

“She bit through all that,” said Williams, still shocked.

And then she fled – but cops nabbed her blocks away. Bolar, who faces assault charges was held without bail, pending a psychiatric exam.

See, you do have to be crazy to believe the hype.

Specialty pistol silliness

This is what happens when you’re doing a whole bunch of “home gunsmithing” jobs at once. Being surrounded by guns, frames, barrels and parts makes one giddy and prone to weird inspiration. Staying up til 2:30 am might have had something to do with it too.

The result: a Thompson/Center Encore 20-gauge shotgun — with a pistol grip. Long enough to be legal with a 24″ barrel, and surprisingly lightweight and handy. Balance is just aft of where the rear sight sets. Would be a really easy-carrying field gun. Don’t know how many birds you’d actually hit, though.

And yes, those are Williams FireSight rifle sights. They came with the barrel even though it’s a smoothbore. I’ve shot clays with this gun with a shoulder stock mounted, and it’s doable with the rifle sights — just different.
