On Republican complacency.

I think the South Carolina Republican Party took notice of what went on in the NY-23.

Republican leaders in a South Carolina county have censured their own U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham for working with Democrats on a climate bill and other legislation.

The Republican has often worked with Democrats in Congress, but Charleston County Chairwoman Lin Bennett says his work on climate legislation is the last straw.

Graham spokesman Kevin Bishop says Graham is looking for a way forward on energy legislation.

The “Way Forward” is to not bottle up our own resources, like his buddies in the Democratic Party prefer to do.

Graham embodies just about all that is wrong with the Republicans these days. His biggest fault is that he is always willing to “compromise” so that he looks like he is doing “something”. He can do this because he has nothing solid in the way of ideals to stand in front of.

Good on the SCRP. Every time he deals with the Dems they should strip him of a chunk of funding. Maybe when a House member gets more money from them than he does he’ll take notice?

Blind Side

The human race has a large one.

Although no one noticed at the time, the Earth was almost hit by an asteroid last Friday.

The previously undiscovered asteroid came within 8,700miles of Earth but astronomers noticed it only 15 hours before it made its closest approach.
Its orbit brought it 30 times nearer than the Moon, which is 250,000 miles away.

Luckily for us, it was smaller than a RV. But still.

Here’s the Beef

One of the benefits of living in the Bay Area is that Amazon’s fulfillment center seems to be in Hayward or somewhere close by. I get Amazon purchases ridiculously quickly. I ordered the Libby’s canned beef from this post Sunday evening, and the first month’s shipment arrived today, way ahead of schedule.

It’s tasty!

I opened a can for lunch. I’ll add pics later, but the primary difference between the Libby’s and the prior favorite from Costco is that Libby’s has less meat and it’s in gravy. But it’s a very tasty gravy! The beef itself is almost exactly like the Costco version, so much so that I suspect they might have had the same manufacturer. (I don’t remember the Costco beef’s country of origin, but the Libby’s is from Brazil. Mmm, Brazilian beef….)

I’m quite satisfied with this purchase, and highly recommend it to any beef-lovers prepping for anything from earthquake to SHTF. Beats holy hell out of a bunch of jerky.

Full Custom

Tam wrote about the building of custom firearms here. Chris Byrne followed up with his views on the subject, here.

Let me just take a moment to put something down on the subject.

For the same reasons as Chris, I must have at least some customization in my firearms. My arms are extra long. The LOP on my rifles approaches a foot and a half. My eyes aren’t what they once were, and they were never great. Because of this I have done many experiments with sights. Everyone likes a good trigger. I require them and will repeatedly send a gun back until the smith gets it perfected.

I have a Remington 700 in .308Win that cost me as much to build as a factory new Barrett M99. It is one of my favorite rifles to take to Boomershoot every year.

When folks hear how much I’ve got into it, some of them as why didn’t I just buy the Barrett? My first reason is because I have a decent supply of .308Win and no supply of .50BMG. Secondly, the Barrett wouldn’t have been big enough for me from the factory and I’d have had to put another few hundred dollars into making it fit. Oh, and when I’m on my game, my 700 shoots sub half-MOA groups.

I have the same LOP problems with shotguns. I’ve learned to compensate with customization. Without it, my nose gets introduced to my thumb.

I recently put a fully kitted HK USP’s worth of cash into a Browning HiPower. Besides the fact the HK thinks I suck and hates me, I didn’t buy a new wunderpistol that money because the HiPower does everything exactly the way I want it to. And because it is the number of deliveries on target that matter and not how impressed the bad guy is with your firearm selection, I’m quite happy with it.

Likewise, all of my 1911’s are either frame-up builds or base model customs.

While I may not have the quantity of individual pieces that some guys have, I no long “need” anything. Sure, there are firearms I “want”. And in time, I will acquire them. But until then, I’m fully kitted.

Chris touched on the topic of selling custom firearms and losing money by doing so. I know that if I ever had to sell my 700, I’d only get $1200 to $1500 out of it. Luckily, when I had the stock built, I made it fully is adjustable, so my potential market is larger. But still, getting 50% out of a fully customized firearm is average. Some get more. Some get less. I recently sold my customized Ruger MKII-10 and only took a 10% loss, but only because this model is somewhat rare and the buyer REALLY wanted one.

Other than that one pistol, the somewhat recent firearms purge from my safes were all factory models that I hadn’t yet customized. I sold them all to friends and family for what I paid for them.

I highly recommend that every single person build at least one firearm from the frame/receiver up in their lifetime. After the joy you get from your first firearm, there is no joy greater than that of a gun you built explicitly for yourself and no one else.

Halloween night saw the murder of Seattle Police Officer Tim Brenton and the attempted murder of his rookie partner, Britt Sweeney, as they sat in their cruiser in the Rainier Valley area of Seattle filling out paperwork. Last Friday, Seattle detectives arrested a local student, Christopher Monfort, as a suspect in the case, but only after he attempted to evade arrest by pointing a pistol at the detectives.

Monfort is alleged to have snuck up behind the officer’s car with a rifle, shot and killed Brenton, cycled the action, and shot and wounded Sweeney. Officer Sweeney was able to return fire and make Monfort retreat. One of the clues to the identity of the shooter are Sweeney’s hits on the vehicle used by the suspect.

While local leftists will brush Monfort’s past off as nothing of substance, he was also an anti-war artist (though not a very good one), and some of his studies fell into the field of Criminal Justice, though he was more than likely studying that for “Social Justice” reasons.

According to a UW graduate school abstract, the title of a project Monfort presented in May 2007 was ” The Power of Citizenship your Government doesn’t want You to know about. How to change the inequity of the Criminal Justice System immediately, through Active Citizen Nullification of Laws, as a Juror.”

This piece of shit hasn’t even been arraigned yet and I can already see the Mumia-like protesters demanding he be set free and SPD be made to apologize for shooting him.

Glad they could make it official

One of the big stories from while I was on vacation that didn’t get the press it deserved was that Eco-Socialism is now an officially recognized philosophy equal to a religion in the UK.

In a landmark ruling, Mr Justice Michael Burton said that “a belief in man-made climate change … is capable, if genuinely held, of being a philosophical belief for the purpose of the 2003 Religion and Belief Regulations”.

The ruling could open the door for employees to sue their companies for failing to account for their green lifestyles, such as providing recycling facilities or offering low-carbon travel.

The decision regards Tim Nicholson, former head of sustainability at property firm Grainger plc, who claims he was made redundant in July 2008 due to his “philosophical belief about climate change and the environment”.

In March, employment judge David Heath gave Mr Nicholson permission to take the firm to tribunal over his treatment.

But Grainger challenged the ruling on the grounds that green views were political and based on science, as opposed to religious or philosophical in nature.

John Bowers QC, representing Grainger, had argued that adherence to climate change theory was “a scientific view rather than a philosophical one”, because “philosophy deals with matters that are not capable of scientific proof.”

That argument has now been dismissed by Mr Justice Burton, who last year ruled that the environmental documentary An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore was political and partisan.

The decision allows the tribunal to go ahead, but more importantly sets a precedent for how environmental beliefs are regarded in English law.

Are you an Eco-Socialist who thinks that your company should be forced to do more to help you tele-commute?

You now have legal precedent for your suit!

Does your company own or lease any private aircraft?

Make them justify said ownership or contract.

Or the next direction I see this heading…..

Does your company not take your vegan sensitivities into account and have a cafeteria that serves foods which contain meat, dairy or fish products?

You may remember my rant here about Costco’s sudden discontinuance of their excellent Kirkland in-house brand of canned beef. It was easily a fraction of the price of other canned beef products available on the market, as I found out to my dismay when I went to restock our survival/earthquake stored food. We’ve eaten all that we had on hand, and now have a 90-days’-worth hole that needs to be filled.

Enter Amazon! They’ve got Libby’s canned beef, in almost the same size package, at a fairly cheap price ($0.27/oz). Haters

I’ve never been one to say nice things about Led Zepplin.

Yeah, I can be a blasphemer on the topic of Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham. I’ve never bought any of the albums, and am widely known to turn the station if they pop up via the FM radio.

It’s mostly Robert Plant’s voice that does it for me. I’ve stated multiple times in the past that I would be more inclined to buy their albums if I could find them in some sort of a kind of karaoke version.

While not costing me friendships or any such thing, it does put me out of “The Crowd”.

Until last night.

The other day I was driving down the road and my favorite Rock station was on a roll, having played four excellent bits of tunage in a row. The set was so good that I didn’t even notice until a few minutes in that they had slipped in Zepplin’s The Immigrant Song.

And I’ll be damned if I wasn’t carrying right along as though I didn’t mind.

All of which leads me to have to admit that I have procured albums One through Four, so that I may survey them ad nauseum. And I am certain that I will get sick of them sooner than later.

On a side note, in my searching for which albums to listen to first, I came upon a group of folks who despise Led Zepplin.

I don’t care who you are. Once you decide that you are going to spend hours at Amazon so that you can write bad things about a rock n roll band, you need to realize that you’re full of hate.

I was told that the election of President Obama was going to bring in a time of peace and love. Yet another lie.
