Peek Into My Mind: Bookmarks

Tomorrow my buggy office computer’s getting wiped and all-new software installed.

Part of the backup process involves clearing out my intarwebs bookmarks, and since I tend to bookmark as a placeholder — sort of an “I found this interesting but don’t have time to look at it now; a gift to you, future self!” process — I figure I’ll just take most of ’em and plant ’em here. Uncle’s new meme

In case you missed it, Uncle started a meme with his post on the Audi Superbowl ad.

The commercial should have ended with a guy in a big ass Ford Earthfuckertm that gets 5 miles per gallon with seats made from baby seals blowing past the roadblock billowing smoke. And, for effect, the driver flips them off. I’d buy that car. Not this little compliant pansy car. You appeal to Americans in an ad by showing rebellion and general orneriness. Not passiveness, compliance, or sheepishness.

Wait until ACORN is publishing the textbooks

The Open College Textbook Act of 2010

HR 4575 – To authorize grants for the creation, update, or adaption of open textbooks, and for other purposes.

Section 4 – Part E

(a) Grants Authorized- From the amounts appropriated under subsection (i), the Secretary is authorized to award grants, on a competitive basis, to eligible entities to carry out the activities described in this section, including creating, updating, or adapting open textbooks. The Secretary shall award grants in a manner that will result in the creation of a comprehensive slate of high quality course materials for introductory courses in a variety of subject areas.

(b) Eligible Entity- In this section, the term ‘eligible entity’ means–

(1) an institution of higher education;

(2) a professor or group of professors at an institution of higher education; or

(3) a nonprofit or for-profit organization that produces open textbooks.

As a current college student, I can tell you that it is already difficult to find a text book that even mentions “climate change skeptics”.

This would make it impossible.

Background ad absurdium

In America you need to have a background check to buy a firearm.

In the UK, you need to have a background check to see you child at their school.

Last week, the boy Puddlecote’s school e-mailed their regular newsletter. At the end of the sterile but cheery message was a plea for parent participation.

“The children are always pleased when parents hear them sing at our assembly shows, so please come along if you can. Remember to bring your CRB checks with you”

Now, I’m CRB checked but was working. However, there are plenty others who would be able to attend but have never required clearance from the CRB in work or voluntary activities. And seeing as the process, in my experience, can take up to three months, anyone without clearance who wished to attend was effectively barred on the remote premise that they might be a paedophile.

Drive your child to the assembly and then go sit in the parking lot, perv.

Guilty until proven innocent, after all, it seems.

Doing the criminal’s work for them

Who needs enemies when you have government like this?

The Department of Health Care Services said Monday it has breached the privacy of 49,352 people who receive adult day-care services from the state.

The department said that letters it mailed a week ago to 49,352 Medi-Cal beneficiaries wrongly included each patient’s Social Security number on their address labels.

The department said the security incident took place Feb. 1, but it was only told about it on Thursday. It started to notify the 49,352 beneficiaries about the problem over the weekend.

“At this point, there is no evidence that unauthorized parties have acquired or accessed beneficiary personal information,” the department said in a prepared statement.

DHCS officials said they regretted the breach, which has so far cost the state $50,000. It blamed itself and a private vendor for the problem mailings.

Karen Johnson, a deputy director at the department, said officials are investigating and will figure out who pays for what when they get the findings.

Just who do they think they’re kidding. All of us at RNS know who is going to have to pay for it.
