I owe the authors of Oren’s War an apology; I’ve been sitting on a half-finished review for weeks now while dealing with our Lab/Pit/Shepherd mix Kaya‘s medical problems. If the $3,000 in vet bills to save the dog shot by cops in the post below seems outrageous, it’s not; it strikes me as a bargain.

Seriously, Police Officers, do you get extra points toward retirement for every dog you shoot in the course of your duties?  When are police going to wake up to the fact that shooting dogs is bad for public trust unless that dog is charging or currently clamped onto an appendage?

When municipalities look to cut their budgets, they always go after the departments that they are mandated to fund and leaving their ancillary pet-project stuff alone.

Police/Sheriff departments are usually at the top of the list.

But they never cut the important stuff from the Po-Po’s budget: For example – The fuel bills for cruisers. Why do they let the officers/deputies take them home at night? In King County Sheriff’s Department the majority of the damage to cruiser doesn’t happen because of accidents, it occurs due to vandalism at the officers residence. Slashed tires, broken windows/mirrors/lights, etc.

If they were locked up at the precinct, behind a gate, this wouldn’t happen (and yes, I know about that jackass who tried to blow up cars in the SPD yard late last year. The keyword in the phrase is “tried”).

But it is not done because it is seen by the officers/deputies and their unions as one of the “perks of the badge”.

Seattle PD has officers that don’t even live inside the county limits, but get to drive their cruisers home every day. Why not make it a rule that you only get to take the car home if you live within the jurisdiction’s boundaries?

Or how’s about taking a chainsaw to the damn SWAT budget for once?

Over the last six months of 2009, SWAT teams were deployed 804 times in the state of Maryland, or about 4.5 times per day. In Prince George’s County alone, with its 850,000 residents, a SWAT team was deployed about once per day. According to a Baltimore Sun analysis, 94 percent of the state’s SWAT deployments were used to serve search or arrest warrants, leaving just 6 percent in response to the kinds of barricades, bank robberies, hostage takings, and emergency situations for which SWAT teams were originally intended.

Worse even than those dreary numbers is the fact that more than half of the county’s SWAT deployments were for misdemeanors and nonserious felonies. That means more than 100 times last year Prince George’s County brought state-sanctioned violence to confront people suspected of nonviolent crimes. And that’s just one county in Maryland.

Over at CCinZ, they get their destruction fetish on (in a good way, of course).

Apart from the thermonuclear warheads, SLAM itself was also a very formidable weapon. The sonic boom of a 25+ m long vehicle flying at Mach 3+ at 300 m altitude would cause severe destruction in non-hardened structures on the ground. Additionally, the nuclear ramjet continuously left a trail of highly radioactive dust, which would seriously contaminate the area below the missile. Finally, when the SLAM eventually crashed itself at the end of the mission, it would leave a wreckage of a very hot and radioactive (“dirty”) nuclear reactor.

Sounds like fun. So much so that it makes some folks angry.

I just love that, “Apart from the thermonuclear warheads” (note the plural – it could carry up to 26!). They seriously considered building something the size of a locamotive powered by a nuclear ramjet leaving a trail of sonic and radioactive devestation in it’s wake and it lobbed thermonukes.

I was born way too early and in the wrong country because that’s utterly brilliantly mad. 1950s America with Elvis on the radio and me with my physics degrees and taste for the subtle mathematics of blowing the fuck out of stuff* working on a nuclear ramjet (wow!!!) and cars with fins and wasp-waisted ladies and wasp-waisted fighter jets (NACA Area Rule) would suit me about right.

Yet, it’s 2010 and I still don’t have my sodding jetpack and they’re thinking of powering the country with fucking windmills!

I wannabe George Jetson and I’m going to end-up as Barney Rubble.

When did it change? I’ve seen kid’s books from the ’50s and they celebrated speed and adventure and technology. Nowadays they don’t tell you how to build a radio to listen to Sputnik going beep but how you must compost otherwise Gaia will drown an ickle polar bear or some similar nonsense. When and how did this all go wrong? When and why did we give the fire back to the Gods?

*Apologies if that phrase is too technical.

Who taught who?

Did SPLC learn this from the Obama Administration’s “Jobs Saved or Created” accounting or was it the other way around.

Robert Stacy McCain takes on the SPLC and their “new”, “expanded” list of “Hate Groups”.

One of the ways they pumped up the numbers to “frightening” level was to include each chapter of a group called We the People”. There were 48 chapters. What do “We the People” do to get on the list?

They sue the IRS.

Ohh! That’s almost like flying a plane into a office building in the Obamanation!

Congressman Ron Paul returns a whopping $100,000 of his office budget to the US Treasury

Like him or hate him, Dr. Ron Paul doesn’t just talk a big game about fiscal conservatism, he lives it.  In 2008, his congressional office returned $58,000 to the Treasury.  In 2009, his office returned $90,000.  Now, according to an official press release, Dr. Ron Paul’s congressional office has just paid back $100,000.

At a time when Wall St is running wild, the national debt is $14 trillion, and the federal government is running $1.4 trillion deficits, Dr. Ron Paul’s congressional office is running a surplus and paying back the American people.  At a time when the federal government is paying record salaries and hiring record numbers as the rest of America suffers punishing unemployment, Dr. Ron Paul is operating his congressional office with a frugality that recognizes the current economic climate and respects the suffering of the American people.

Speaker Pelosi heard of this and promptly sent a memo to Paul’s office thanking him. She’d been having a difficult time finding the cash to pay for the fuel to take her and the grandkids to Barbados.
