Enough already!

Seriously, Police Officers, do you get extra points toward retirement for every dog you shoot in the course of your duties?  When are police going to wake up to the fact that shooting dogs is bad for public trust unless that dog is charging or currently clamped onto an appendage?

You know, the corollary to the modern trend of treating pets like children is that someday, when a cop wrongfully kills a pet, the owner’s gonna go after the cop’s kid.

It isn’t just dogs. It’s Dogs, cats, kids, grandmas, anything and everything that might possibly pose the tiniest bit of potential threat to an officer is being tazed, sprayed or shot at the earliest opportunity. Further, it is a direct result of what passes for teaching in the academies today. I saw it when I went through in 2003. My academy instructors were explicitly clear, that rule #1 was the officer goes home safely at the end of every shift, and you do what you have to do to make that happen. Somewhere along the line, agencies have lost sight of the fact that officers can not do the job without taking risks, and while it is certainly wise and good to try minimizing those risks, it seems to me we have a bunch of trigger happy cops out there these days.
