Josh Gerstein over at Politico sent Threat Level his piece underscoring once again President Barack Obama is not the civil-liberties knight in shining armor many were expecting.

Gerstein posts a televised interview of Obama and John Walsh of America’s Most Wanted. The nation’s chief executive extols the virtues of mandatory DNA testing of Americans upon arrest, even absent charges or a conviction. Obama said, “It’s the right thing to do” to “tighten the grip around folks” who commit crime.

And remember that in the Obamanation, some standard fishing practices will be a crime.

I think the Pilgrim’s trip across the Atlantic took longer than it did for this idea to do so.

I remember the President saying, “Everybody is going to have to give. Everybody is going to have to have some skin in the game.” But, we all knew that he didn’t mean everybody. Take a guess whom those who pay nothing are picking at the polls.

More reason for a flat tax, or at least, an everybody pays something tax. Good idea, Mr. President.

We are annoyed by the assumption on the part of certain public figures that the citizen should be able to prove the need to acquire a means of protecting himself. The citizen’s personal needs are no business of the state. Liberty, when in place, grants the right of the citizen to do what he chooses as long as he does not stamp on the rights of others. Nobody needs caviar or a pleasure boat or opera tickets. Whether he wants these things is, again, no business of the state.

I know that this quote is not new. But, I had never heard/read it and figured that maybe a few readers here may not have as well.

I found this gem in the April 2010 issue of Guns & Ammo. There is also a good article about how the M16 got a bad rap in Vietnam, at no fault of its own, and how to this day it and all of it’s variants still carry that stigma.

I done a good thing

Today was the last day of science club, where I (and two other Engineers) showed 4th & 5th graders how to attach a sling to the end of their trebuchets and thereby increase the throw by a factor of 5 or more.  Talk about engaging the minds of our youth.

Mom always told me that children are the Stormtroopers for the Lords of Chaos, and today I hope I gave them all another tool to use in the quest to spread mayhem.

US Mulls ‘Black Box’ in new cars.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration chief David Strickland told a congressional hearing on Thursday that the regulator is considering whether to make “black boxes” mandatory for all new vehicles.

The devices can capture data on speed, braking effort and other details which can be vital in reconstructing accidents.

It’s true that a rising tide lifts all boats. But how those boats are handled makes a big difference when the tide is out and the waters get rough.

State governments across the country are dealing with the continuing national recession in different ways. In Idaho, our focus is on stability. Predictable tax and regulatory policies are what our employers need in order to maintain their operations through this rough patch, and it’s what employers elsewhere are looking for when they consider expanding or relocating.

Other states, however, have chosen some interesting and in my view counterproductive approaches. Last month, for example, Oregon voters approved their legislature’s decision to raise taxes on the wealthy and on many businesses by $727 million. The immediate result was that my phone started ringing – and so did phones over at our Department of Commerce. It seems that word has spread about our Project 60 initiative, and that we are open for business, including theirs!

This a definite RTWT piece.

The collaborative opportunity in Haiti, when you talk about Hugo Chavez, and some of the other people who are demonized [think Castro], and you know, when some of these countries accuse us of an occupation — where I believe this was strictly a humanitarian action by the United States military, and an incredible one – I’m a little sympathetic. Because every day, this elected leader is called a dictator here, and we just accept it! And accept it. And this is mainstream media, who should – truly, there should be a bar by which one goes to prison for these kinds of lies.

Making the 2010 elections look even brighter

It seems that Chuckie Schumer wants the Democrats to Go Big AND Go Home.

Lawmakers working to craft a new comprehensive immigration bill have settled on a way to prevent employers from hiring illegal immigrants: a national biometric identification card all American workers would eventually be required to obtain.

Under the potentially controversial plan still taking shape in the Senate, all legal U.S. workers, including citizens and immigrants, would be issued an ID card with embedded information, such as fingerprints, to tie the card to the worker.

The ID card plan is one of several steps advocates of an immigration overhaul are taking to address concerns that have defeated similar bills in the past.

The uphill effort to pass a bill is being led by Sens. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), who plan to meet with President Barack Obama as soon as this week to update him on their work. An administration official said the White House had no position on the biometric card.

Because I don’t care which side of the aisle you’re on, nobody but politicians and folks who do this under contract for the government likes Biometric ID’s.

If it’s a bad idea, it’s going to have Schumer and Graham’s name on it. That is not bipartisanship. That’s Graham being an idjit.
