How comfortable are illegals in WA?

This comfortable.

Carlos Hernandez packed up his family and left Arizona after the state passed its sweeping immigration crackdown. The illegal immigrant’s new home outside Seattle offered something Arizona could not: a driver’s license.

Three states – Washington, New Mexico and Utah – allow illegal immigrants to get licenses because their laws do not require proof of citizenship or legal residency. An Associated Press analysis found that those states have seen a surge in immigrants seeking IDs in recent months, a trend experts attribute to crackdowns on illegal immigration in Arizona and elsewhere.

“It’s difficult being undocumented and not having an identification,” said Hernandez, of Puebla, Mexico. “You can use the Mexican ID, but people look down on it.” An American driver’s license is also a requirement for many jobs.

The immigration debate has thrown a spotlight on the license programs, which supporters say make financial sense because unlicensed drivers typically do not carry car insurance. Opponents insist the laws attract illegal immigrants and criminals.

The guy is comfortable enough to have the tale of how he left Arizona after it became unfriendly published in the Seattle Times. I won’t even talk to them and I’m a citizen.

Sadly, if they thought they could get more good press than bad press out of it the majority of WA legislators would go down and publicly protest the AZ law.

Good for the LA Times

Identifying bad teachers is not so hard.  I mean, these journalists did it.  And we all know that the best way to make a journalists eyes light up is to shine a flashlight in their ear.

RNS Quote of the Day, 10/16/10

One of the most sobering observations… comes in the form of a disarmingly simple calculus presented first by Isabel Sawhill and Christopher Jencks. If you finish high school and keep a job without having children before marriage, you will almost certainly not be poor. Period. I have repeatedly felt the air go out of the room upon putting this to black audiences. No one of any political stripe can deny it. It is human truth on view. In 2004, the poverty rate among blacks who followed that formula was less than 6 percent, as opposed to the overall rate of 24.7 percent.

12yr old kid races in the NASCAR Legends Division.

Fast cars. More than slightly dangerous, even with they safety precautions and gear.

But that is not what the folks at the HuffPo are angry about.

Gray Gaulding, a 12-year-old known for being an up-and-coming NASCAR star, has an interesting sponsor: GunBroker.Com, an online handgun distributor.

The web site promises “the world’s largest online auction of firearms and accessories” and offers access to a range of weaponry in addition to guns, including knives and swords. Other services, such as taxidermy and safari planning, are also available. No mention of the preteen driver is found on the site’s frontpage.

Gaulding is the youngest driver in the NASCAR Legends Division and has won $20,000 this year. A winner of ten races, Gaulding has been racing since he was three years old and loves the attention.

Teh Outrage!

They can’t even get the basic premise of GunBroker right. How do they expect anyone to take them seriously?

Who are you?

If you are a small business owner, or the person who interviews people for a medium or large business, they that is the question you repeatedly try to find an answer to throughout your hiring process.

Can this person read a clock? Are they lying about their previous experience? Or their educational history? Do they have a harassment history? Or a criminal history?

Every single employee that a business has to hire carries with them a certain amount of liability to the company. Even the best of the best employees.

However, in most cases, their liabilities are far outweighed by the benefits they bring to the company.

Some folks in the Obamanation want to make getting the liabilities answer even more difficult than it currently is.

Companies using criminal records or bad credit reports to screen out job applicants might run afoul of anti-discrimination laws as the government steps up scrutiny of hiring policies that can hurt blacks and Hispanics.

A blanket refusal to hire workers based on criminal records or credit problems can be illegal if it has a disparate impact on racial minorities, according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The agency enforces the nation’s employment discrimination laws.

“Our sense is that the problem is snowballing because of the technology allowing these checks to be done with a fair amount of ease,” said Carol Miaskoff, assistant legal counsel at the EEOC.

With millions of adults having criminal records — anything from underage drinking to homicide — a growing number of job seekers are having a rough time finding work. And more companies are trying to screen out people with bankruptcies, court judgments or other credit problems just as those numbers have swollen during the recession.

Just ask Adrienne Hudson, a single mother who says she was fired from her new job as a bus driver at First Transit in Oakland, Calif., when the company found out she had been convicted seven years earlier for welfare fraud.

Hudson, 44, is fighting back with a lawsuit alleging the company’s hiring practice discriminates against black and Latino job seekers, who have arrest and conviction rates far greater than whites.

Then the Latino and Black communities and families need to instill in their children and young adults that getting rolled up by Johnny Law has lifelong punishments beyond just jail time and to keep their fucking noses clean.

One of the larger parts of First Transit’s operation are contracts with school districts. She was very likely a school bus driver. Do you want criminals driving your children to school? Probably not. And neither do the school districts who contract with First Transit.

Tough shit, lady. Maybe if you had thought about how stealing tax dollars for your personal benefit might hinder future job searches before committing the crime, you wouldn’t be where you are now. You made your bed, now sleep in it.

My employer has taken to using a temp agency to find a few of my new coworkers. They put them to work doing menial data entry jobs to see if they can show up on time and work within our rather outdated system for a few months before actually hiring them. So far, we’ve avoided a semi-professional forger, a drunk, and a guy who couldn’t find his very large ass if I twisted his head around and told him it was what my foot was sticking out of.

In 2000, I went through a previous employment check, a criminal background check, a credit check and more than a couple tests. Miraculously, though I think it is more that I’m competent and didn’t lie to my prospective employer, I was hired and have been their over a decade.

Something in that formula worked.

Time Off

Summer Quarter, and the final exams that come with it, is finally over.

The results are in and I made Epic Fail on the Math final, getting a 71.88%. However, because I can read both calendars and clocks and did well throughout the quarter, I’ll have a 93% score for the class.

Fall Quarter has me moving on to Calculus. I’m trying to get excited about this, but finding the proper enthusiasm to dredge some “care” out of “Give-A-Damn Bay” is not in my drop-down menu right now. And I don’t see it in my future since I’ve been reading the Amazon reviews on the $135 textbook I have to buy for the class.

(I used to work in the book wholesale world and I know how much it costs them to print and bind books of this size. Let’s just say that a latte is more expensive. I’ll be having a post on the Higher Education Racket in the next day or so.

My employer only reimburses me for classes if I get an 80% or better and I thought that I would end up having to deal without reimbursement for my Philosophy 106 class because of my horrid performance there. But, in true classic American underdog style, I studied my ass off and aced the last quiz and got a 95% on the final. I should end up with an 84.51% for the course and not have worries on the money front because of this particular class.
On a side note, the last quiz was actually given the day AFTER the final. I guess this is because the list of courses a person has to take to get a PhD in Philosophy and a Masters in Education so that they can teach Philosophy does not include one on “Time Management and Organization”.

Cough

Congrats to David on the new internet interface machine.

But dude,

What you very likely paid for that thing would pay for two quarters of my college tuition.

I do everything you described on an Athlon organized refurbished desktop that I bought 4 years ago for $299.

Enjoy, my man. But next time you go to the Apple store, wear a belt on your pants so they can’t get inside your underwear so fast. And make sure it has your name engraved on the back so there is a chance they’ll remember it.

First Post from the New Machine

Patience is a supreme virtue where electronics are concerned. We patiently endured a free but ancient wintel POS but it finally died; we ditched it in favor of a 17″ MacBook Pro with the i7 chip running at 266 GHz and 8GB of RAM.

The new beastie arrived yesterday, and it’s smokin’ fast. I can run MS Excel, be copying several gigabytes of files in the background, be streaming di.fm in one window and running a crystal-clear HD Youtube video in another, and there’s no skipping, no hesitation, nothing of the sort.

As of last week, if I wanted to play a video without multi-second pauses, I had to kill off every other application running.

This thing should last us four or five years. I’m quite pleased with it — Apple’s packaging, attention to detail and sheer user-friendliness are just as good, if not better, than I remembered from my last Mac, a Powerbook 180c that lasted me through law school and for a half-decade beyond.

The WordPress posting interface is a bit different, in Safari, though — can’t yet figure out where the little toolbar went to. On the other hand, I should be able to organize all of my Boomershoot photos lightning-quick and start posting them again, for example. A single photo would take minutes to load on the old machine; now they’re instantaneous.

Two Drink Minimum

Boss gave me two free tix to see some guy named Rich Vos at the local comedy club. Wife and I and a couple friends will check it out tonight. Hopefully he’s funny. At least we’ll get a nice (albeit expensive) dinner out of it.
