Better late than never

Thanks to a chance conversation I had with an acquaintence, which I then mentioned to The Wife, and a Science Channel program she watched one night when the insomnia kicked up, she has handed me the opportunity to make Firebase Blue water independent in short order.

I’ve locally sourced all the pieces needed to collect, store, and even transport close to 1000 gallons of water for TEOTWAWKI purposes. I have also found a source for food storage containers in both “Long Term” and “Tonnage Capacity” categories.

The reason I’m telling this is that there are quantity discounts. If you’re in the Puget Sound area and want to do some back scratching and/or need help transporting large items (or large quantities of bulky items), give me a shout and let’s talk.

Well, that market is blown

For the other Preppers who, like myself, use the gov’t surplus sales departments to buy kewl items, you can thank FOX for shitting on the market.

This will be a pretty screwed Spring/Summer shopping scene.

You Got It. They Want It.

It is just that simple.

The 50 U.S. states are holding more than $32 billion worth of unclaimed property that they’re supposed to safeguard for their citizens. But a “Good Morning America” investigation found some states aggressively seize property that isn’t really unclaimed and then use the money — your money — to balance their budgets.

Unclaimed property consists of things like forgotten apartment security deposits, uncashed dividend checks and safe-deposit boxes abandoned when an elderly relative dies.

Banks and other businesses are required to turn that property over to the state for safekeeping. The problem is that the states return less than a quarter of unclaimed property to the rightful owners.

…..

California law used to say property was unclaimed if the rightful owner had had no contact with the business for 15 years. But during various state budget crises, the waiting period was reduced to seven years, and then five, and then three. Legislators even tried for one year. Why? Because the state wanted to use that free money.

“That’s absolutely correct,” said California State Controller John Chiang, who inherited the situation when he came into office. “What we’ve done here over the last two decades has been dead wrong. We’ve kept the property and not provided owners with the opportunities — the best opportunities — to get their property back.”

Chiang now faces the daunting task of returning $5.1 billion worth of unclaimed property to people. Some states keep their unclaimed property in a special trust fund and only tap into the interest they earn on it. But California dumps the money into the general fund — and spends it.

“It’s supposed to be segregated and protected,” Palmer said. “California has taken all of that $5.1 billion and has used it as a massive loan.”

California became so addicted to spending people’s money, that, for years, it simply stopped sending notices to the rightful owners. ABC News obtained a 1996 internal memo in which the lawyer for the Bureau of Unclaimed Property argued against expanding programs to notify rightful owners. He wrote, “It could well result in additional claims of monies that would otherwise flow into the general fund.”

I expect nothing less of them.

You all do have your Last Will and Testaments up to date with all the correct and pertinent information of your property, right? (The Mom will be getting her wish grated within the upcoming weeks as The Wife and I get our updated and finalized).

That is very kind of you!

We must not have enough semi-tractors to handle the work.

Oh, we do?

Well then, we must not have enough drivers to pilot the tractors.

Oh, record unemployment?

Well then, I’m at a loss as to why you and I are paying to upgrade semi-tractors owned by Mexican operators so that they can haul trailers throughout the US.

In the latest effort to accommodate its cherished trade partner in the south, the U.S. government is paying to upgrade outdated Mexican trucks that hemorrhage illegal amounts of exhaust on their trips north to deliver merchandise.

The Mexican trucks enter the U.S. under a 17-year-old international trade pact known as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and they’ve created an air pollution crisis. The air quality in border towns has been especially impacted by the exorbitant levels of exhaust released by the Mexican trucks, which also fail to meet American safety standards.

Since the Mexican truckers have no intention of fixing the problem, Uncle Sam has stepped in to save the environment. U.S. taxpayers have picked up the cost to replace old mufflers on dozens of trucks and many more are scheduled to be upgraded by the middle of this year. The unbelievable story was reported this week by an Arizona newspaper that says replacing the old mufflers with new catalytic converters will reduce harmful diesel emissions by up to 30%.

I’m just kidding about being at a loss. The administration cares more about keeping Mexico happy than about Americans being employed. It’s really just that simple.

Spooky Inflation

I don’t watch much TV. I happened to have CNBC on just now to check the commodities and stock tickers, and found myself watching an ad for SunSetter Retractable Awnings. (You know, the one carefully targeted to retiring baby-boomers’ images of themselves, with the cute-hot middle-age-ish wife and the just-a-bit-too-hunky-for-her-husband. Of course a hot couple like that’s gonna need a retractable awning to shade all their swingers’ parties, don’tcha know.)

Anyway, so they get into the pitch and the guy’s mouth very clearly says the words “as little as three hundred ninety-nine dollars” but what the voice-over says is “FOUR hundred ninety-nine dollars.”

Apparently this edit may have been done as far back as two years ago. Still, for some reason the spooky, intentional unobtrusiveness of the price-jump made me feel like Roddy Piper in They Live for just a moment. Are there lots more commercials that have been modified this way?

Don’t forget that They Live still has the best fight scene in a movie, for my money.

UPDATE: Of course, what should CNBC be showing but “America’s Tax Cheats,” with footage of SWAT teams with armored vehicles (!!) busting down tax cheaters, in partnership with the IRS. Niiice timing. I knew CNBC was propaganda central, but Jesus!

I think I’ll go drink some whisk(e)y now. Lots. Before the price goes up and I can’t afford the Federal liquor tax.

DOUBLE-PLUS-UNGOOD-UPDATE: Okay, this is just too weird. Now I’m noticing this crap everywhere I look. We got a letter in late March from the Wynn/Encore Las Vegas resort advertising a “getaway package, three nights in a deluxe resort king room if booked 60 days in advance.” Usually I toss these things, but I was sorting through old paperwork and found the identical solicitation letter from 2009.

2009: Three nights (plus two tickets to La Reve) for $249.

2011: Three nights (plus two tickets to La Reve) for $349.

Let’s see, a $100 increase in two years, that would be a 40% inflation rate for that deal over the two years. Only 20% annual inflation on that deal per year, folks!

RNS Quote of the Day, 04/12/11

I can safely say that few people have less respect for the law than lawyers. Abuse of law is not just common, it defines the industry.

–Hustlebear, How to Handle Lawyers Threatening You

Speaking as an attorney, I have to say he’s quite right. It’s sad, really, but true.

I told the couple who host us at Boomershoot some of the details about the crap I deal with every day, most of it either fighting other attorneys or setting up barriers to protect my bosses’ businesses from those sorts of attacks, and they were, I think, a bit shocked at how I went about some of it.

Sometimes it feels like working on a privateer, fighting off pirates. Sure we privateers use the same tactics the pirates do, but we’re really the good guys, see? Sigh.
