That could be a problem

Some of the OWS freaks got a meeting with the “Congressional Progressive Caucus” yesterday.

An Occupy Wall Street group will take to the House later this week, only this time the meeting is a planned occasion with the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Ten organizers from New York’s OWS group will speak to the caucus about their legislative priorities, according to an email sent to Members and obtained by Roll Call.

But, because they’re a “leaderless group” there was an unforeseen problem.

Apparently this meeting has been cancelled, because of pressure from other Occupy members over how these 10 came to represent the movement. “Somebody’s taking the reins in terms of representing the group to Congress. But the rest of Occupy’s not ready for that yet,” said one protester.

I bet things like that never happened in their student government role playing sessions.

Four years for possession in knife crackdown

Anyone caught carrying a knife in town and city centres in Scotland in the coming weeks faces a potential four years in prison, under a new crackdown announced today.

The six-week pilot scheme will see cases automatically prosecuted as more serious offences, increasing the length of jail terms available to sheriffs from one year to four.

The move follows a similar strengthening of prosecution policy in July covering anyone found with a knife on licensed premises or public transport and in incidents linked to local gangs.

Prosecutors say anyone caught as part of the latest crackdown will be arrested and brought before a sheriff and jury.

Scotland’s top law officer, Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland, QC, said the pilot would involve a zero-tolerance approach to the problem. He said: “The public will wish to enjoy the festive period in our towns and cities without fear. The zero-tolerance crackdown should help to deter anyone stupid enough to think about carrying a knife.

What if you buy a knife for someone for Christmas? How do you get it to the car? And what about scissors? You know, for wrapping gifts. What if you need a new pair?

The Shoe is on the Other Foot

And now that foot is going straight into their mouths.

Last Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed the REINS (Regulations from the Executive In Needs of Scrutiny) Act. This bill would give veto power over Executive Orders and other regulations coming from the Executive Office to the controlling party of either chamber of Congress.

Don’t like an EPA decision/ruling? Either the Senate or the House can veto it and then bring it under consideration of Congress. Essentially, this is the House’s idea for keeping a unitary Executive under control.

I like it. Anything that slows down the paperwork from the federal government is, in my mind, a good thing.

The left, after spending eight years crying about “King George” is getting a case of the vapors because their guy can’t do whatever he wants with a stroke of the pen.

They thought long and hard about it

And two economist professors to the left of Paul Krugman have published a paper (pdf) stating that the “optimal” top tax rate should be…….

Wait for it…….

Wrap your head around that for a moment.

Peter Diamond of MIT and Emmanuel Saez of UC Berkeley believe that their research proves that the “optimal” top tax rate for folks making $1,000,000 or more per year is more than 3/4 of their earnings, and that the skyrocketing of the rates should begin at $400,000, for “the fair distribution of the tax burden”.

Of course, the leftosphere went nuts over the idea.

I noticed that in their “references” section of this paper, they quote their own prior research more than a dozen times. As I stated after the conclusion of my Social Sciences writing course, the favorite pastime of Social Scientists, such as economists, is to quote themselves and their friends while writing a paper that justifies their per-conceived ideas.

Read it if you’ve got the stomach.

On a side note, one of the left-bloggers uses the line “From whom much is given, much is expected.” Now, if my google-fu is up to par, this is a paraphrase of Luke 12:48. The writer is attempting to justify the idea that because someone has earned much wealth, then their tax burden should be far higher so as to “help” those who earn less.

However, if one were to think about the phrase logically, wouldn’t it be those who rely on the money taken from someone at the point of a gun who should be the ones who should live under the higher expectations? We expect more from our constabulary because we give them extraordinary powers over their fellow citizens. Likewise with our politicians.

I guess that the receivers of charity are only following that example.

What Sebastian and Bitter are doing on March 15th next year?

Why?

Because the NRA will be bringing their NRA U program to UPenn-Philly and I’d like to get a look at those protests.

In an effort to educate the next generation of gun rights advocates on exercising and maintaining their constitutionally guaranteed Right to Keep and Bear Arms, NRA has developed a comprehensive program for college students called “NRA University”– NRA U for short.

NRA U is a two-hour training seminar for college students interested in learning more about NRA, the Second Amendment, gun safety, legislative threats to gun rights and the gun control debate.  NRA-ILA staff will travel to a college campus and provide seminar attendees with the tools they’ll need to become more effective activists in the fight to protect our freedom, both on and off campus.

Staff will address the myths of gun control, covering topics such as the history of the Second Amendment and the use of guns for self-defense, and provide the NRA’s solutions to reducing gun crime and accidents.

In addition to ensuring a more balanced discussion of this issue on campus, NRA staff will talk about the various NRA programs in which students can participate.  Students will also learn about opportunities to work with like-minded activists in their area.

While I don’t doubt that the protests would be just as vocal at the college I attend, I am not a full-time student and am therefore not allowed to invite speakers or speaking groups. There is also no “Conservative Student Union” or “College Republican: group that I could forward this onto. Sure, the MeCHA group has permanent status, as do the rainbow of racial student groups. But nothing for middle aged white guys.

There is the LDS Student Association. I wonder if they’d be interested?

Being Like Han

I have told this story before, but it has been a while so I think it should be retold.

When DVD for The Phantom Menace hit stores, I was unprepared for their marketing practices.

I was walking through one of our local mega-malls for some stupid reason or another. As I was making my way to one of the stores on my list I rounded a 90 degree corner and came face to face with a pair of fully clad and armed Storm Troopers less than 25 feet away.

I was already in what Colonel Cooper described as Condition Yellow, but being a GenXer, fully educated in the evilness of the Empire, seeing the pair of Imperial goons sent me immediately past Condition Orange and into Red. My hand swiftly went from my side and around the front of my coat to push it back so that I could access my pistol.

Thankfully, reason and sanity quickly ganged up on my fight/flight reflexes and intervened with my motor skills to tell me that these were fictional bad guys and to immediately stop that maneuver.

So, be like Han, just not with the bad guys in that particular universe.

More on Gingrich – Churchill

Steven Hayward, who’s been generous in donating autographed books to the annual Soldiers’ Angels Project VALOUR-IT benefit raffle at Boomershoot, is the author of one of my favorite books on Churchill, specifically, on Churchill and leadership. So the same day I posted about the Churchill/Gingrich parallels, I shot Steven a Facebook message inquiring if he might opine on the subject someday soon. He replied that he was seriously thinking about doing so.

Today, he did.

Reactions ensued, and he responded.

All interesting, and worth your time, I think.
