I was listening in to a legal webinar the other day on some of the lovely things we can expect from Obamacare.
One of the speakers was Christopher E. Condeluci, former tax counsel to the Senate Finance Committee and one of the drafters of this very law.
He repeatedly expressed his surprise, and that of his fellow drafters, at all of the states that are now refusing to set up their own health-insurance exchanges, instead letting the fedgov handle the mess.
Let’s just say I am glad I was on mute.
I doubt that this means he’ll actually read the items he votes on in the future
But I am concerned that we are running out of time before this job-killing tax goes into effect. So, for now, the best thing to do to ensure that this important industry continues to create jobs and producing life-saving devices is to delay this unwise tax.
He wants the Medical Device Tax portion of Obamacare delayed and/or repealed. He cast one of the deciding votes on the legislation, which he apparently did not read.

In many reports on the situation involving the Right-To-Work legislation passed in Michigan this week we have seen the non-union employees who work at union shops called “freeloaders” by the union folks protesting the legislation. It has been a staple in the posts around the leftosphere as well.
These are people with jobs, who pay taxes and spend their money in their local economies.
But try calling a third-generation welfare recipient a “free-loader” in front of their media or political cohorts and you will regret it worse than the last time you ate too much Taco Bell.
In the blathering going on about the upcoming expiration of the “Bush Tax Cuts For the Rich” we are getting a very rare small light of truth from the Democrats.
For a decade now, every time the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts were brought up in the media they were given the above mentioned title. However, during their present crying and wailing session about their expiration their main complaint is that it will cause the taxes of the middle class to go up, with the figure $2200 mentioned quite frequently.
So, are they now admitting that they have been lying for the past decade and the “Tax Cuts for the Rich” weren’t? Yes, they are. They just hope no one notices.
With the so-called fiscal cliff approaching, politicians are virtually unanimous that the expiration of the Bush-era tax law presents a clear and present danger to the middle class. According to the White House, the typical middle class family’s taxes would jump by $2,200 per year. The president recently took this message directly to the people: “Tell members of Congress what a $2,000 tax hike would mean to you. Call your members of Congress, write them an email, post it on their Facebook walls. You can tweet it using the hashtag ‘My2K.’â€
Curiously, however, hardly anyone has noticed that today’s sentiment is a flip-flop for just about any Democrat who has run for any political office any time in the past decade — from the presidency on down. Why? First, consider the Left’s decade-long mantra deriding the Bush tax policies as “tax cuts for the rich,†then ask a simple question: how could the expiration of “tax cuts for the rich†hurt anyone but the rich?
In other words, if the Bush cuts actually were just “tax cuts for the rich,†then their expiration couldn’t hurt the middle class. On the other hand, if their expiration would hurt the middle class, then characterizing them as “tax cuts for the rich†was a false message all along.
One of my Senators, Patty “Osama bin laden builds daycare centers” Murray, voted multiple times against those tax cuts. I have been reminding her and her staffers of that. Rather frequently. For my own entertainment, of course.
You should look and see if your Reps and Senators were around at that time and see if they need their memories jogged as to how they felt about lowering taxes on the middle class back then.
You may learn a new insult and/or cuss word or two.

It actually helps to have some experience in the mortgage business. Unlike Joseph Stiglitz, Martin Feldstein, Glenn Hubbard, and others who have written op-eds and influenced policy makers, I actually know something about the track record of giving delinquent borrowers a “break†by modifying their mortgages. What lenders have found is that, even in good times, loan modifications just set borrowers up to fail again. Maybe in the confines of your faculty office you can design a program that should work in theory. But in the real world, we observe failure in practice.
But, Mr. Kling, when you’re getting paid six-figures to write theories that give the media types AND the political types warm fuzzies when they repeat them, why should it have to work in the real world. That just spoils it.

I made it into the 9th Circuit courtroom just now for the CCW cases, including Richards v. Prieto, from my old stomping grounds in Almost-Berkeley Yolo County. Unlike prior Nordyke cases in the same courtroom, spectators so far have been limited to 25. I was 22.
