The problem for the IRS, and for those who support its current level of intrusion in American lives (and its expanded one under Obamacare), is that this scandal is coming at a time when American distrust for government institutions is at incredibly high levels. Consider this poll: http://vlt.tc/vgs 68% of Americans answer “yes” to the question: “Does it feel like the federal government has gotten out of control and is threatening the basic civil liberties of Americans, or doesn’t it feel this way to you?” The sample is plurality Democratic; and the proportion of independents who agree that the federal government threatens civil liberties is a whopping 76%. While overall the IRS scandal is deemed the worst, Independents and Democrats think the White House attack on journalists is the most pressing of the scandals. The ultimate effect of Obama’s second term could be a crumbling faith in governmental institutions, which is only going to spread in an era when no one in government is trusted on civil liberties.

Archangel Mosin Stocks Shipping

I finally placed my order for an Archangel stock and a batch of 10-round mags for my Mosin Eddie. And good timing, too, because they’re shipping!


I can’t tell if that’s factory background noise, but it sounds like the opening bars to “Money,” which would be very appropriate! This is a fantastic example of how easy it still is to create wealth from nothing — “nothing” being an idea, well-executed.

Here’s a nice overview and mag test from a fellow who got his already. This thing has even more well-thought-out design features than I’d realized.

I cannot wait to get mine. I suppose I should buy some 7.62x54R ammo one of these days….

Paperless Rifle

Stumbled across a nice Remington 721 from 1952 in .270 at the FFL today and snapped it up. Has a 2.75x scope and a decent, if slightly heavy trigger. Looks well-used but cared for.

 

 


I’m not much of a .270 fan, so why?

 

Here’s why:

Being more than 50 years old, once in my hands it’s legal to transfer twixt consenting adult Cali residents without any paperwork –at least until January 1, 2014, when even that loophole gets plugged.
I’m no straw purchaser; just like the idea of owning rifles with some flexibility built in.

Rape Self-Defense License

We would not allow cities or states to require poor women to spend several hundred dollars on training and licensing before having a child or an abortion and I don’t see how it is any more constitutional to require a woman to spend several hundred dollars to obtain a license to defend herself against rape.

I think this is an excellent term and we should use it often in making the case for 2nd Amendment rights.

Joe Scarborough has a sad that his talking points were flushed down the toilet after a wipe of reality. And not the soft & quilted kind.

One cannot be sure if he actually believes all of what he says. He is, after all, a politician who went into broadcasting.

Maybe one day he’ll say something as true as Ace did last week.

We have gone from having a country with a government to having a government with a country.

A Hofstra University student being held in a headlock at gunpoint by an intruder was accidentally shot and killed by a police officer who had responded to the home invasion at an off-campus home, police said Saturday.

Junior public relations major Andrea Rebello was shot once in the head early Friday morning by an officer who opened fire after the masked intruder pointed a gun at the officer while holding the 21-year-old student, Nassau County homicide squad Lt. John Azzata said.

In a tense confrontation with the officer, gunman Dalton Smith “menaces our police officer, points his gun at the police officer,” Azzata said. The officer opened fire, killing Smith and his hostage.

Azzata said the Nassau County police officer fired eight shots at Smith, who police described as having an “extensive” criminal background. Smith was hit seven times and died. Rebello was shot once in the head.

Sadly, that officer still had a better hit/miss ratio than the officers who responded to the the Empire State Building killer.

It’s Not a Bug

More than 8,000 French households’ tax bills topped 100 percent of their income last year, the business newspaper Les Echos reported on Saturday, citing Finance Ministry data.

The newspaper said that the exceptionally high level of taxation was due to a one-off levy last year on 2011 incomes for households with assets of more than 1.3 million euros ($1.67 million).

President Francois Hollande’s Socialist government imposed the tax surcharge last year, shortly after taking office, to offset the impact of a rebate scheme created by its conservative predecessor to cap an individual’s overall taxation at 50 percent of income.

The report goes on to mention that the French is redrafting a bill to that this “surcharge” will only effect business.

Because France doesn’t have double-digit unemployment or anything.
