My other highlight of the weekend was shooting my Sharps .45-70 and banging metal on the hill. The 535 gr. bullets won’t set off the boomers as the velocity at the muzzle is around 1100-1200 fps. By the time it reaches the metal silhouette target at 650 yds. up the hill the velocity has petered out to about 870 fps, I’ve downed a can of Diet Coke, read another chapter of Atlas Shrugged and checked the oil on my Suburban. Then comes the sweet sound of the gong clang meandering back down from the hill to our ears. According to my android ‘shooter’ ballistics program, the energy is still above 900 ft-lb. If I could see it coming (can you see bullet trace when it’s coming toward you?), I might be able to dance out of the way in time, but I’d rather it not hit me.

One of the more humorous moments came when someone who will go unnamed here shot the Sharps and after the shot began to tell us how he pulled the shot and missed. Then in the middle of his rant, comes the unmistakeable sound of that chunk of lead smacking the metal target. We all had a good laugh with that one.
