SHTF Sewing Needle

For all those of us who have stashed a on needle-and-thread kit or two in our disaster supplies, but have yet to learn how to sew, much less thread a needle. Has a hole in the side so you can just slide the thread in. $5.50. Worth every penny.

This may go well with the Kevlar thread from http://www.countycomm.com

I have several sewing kits. Some are freebie hotel jobs, with a pair of crummy scissors, a few yards of thread in sundry colors, some buttons, pins, safety pins and three or four sizes of needles. These are very handy, everyone should have several in suitcases, purses, glove boxes, the kitchen junk drawer, you get the drift.

Three are heavy MF’n duty in sturdy canvas drawstring bags, containing a generous ball of right twist Barbour’s linen thread,100% cotton button warp, #25 cotton sewing thread, beeswax, an assortment of sail and sewing needles and a sail maker’s palm in each. One has a 1/2 lb ball of artificial sinew.

I can handily mend any sewn object from a silk cravat to a saddle with materials and tools on hand.

Not one has a patented five and a half dollar needle in it. God Bless the lady and her needle. I hope she makes millions. She won’t, however, see a nickel of my money as my sainted Gramma taught me how to thread a needle before my fifth birthday and had me mending my own clothes before my sixth. Not a pretty mend, mind you, but good enough to keep the weather on the outside.

Go to a fabric store and make friends with an old lady working there, there is always at least one. She will know what button warp is and what it can be used for. I’ve stitched on buttons, stitched up my dog, me, caught fish, sewn up tears in tents and convertible tops with button warp. It is also stronger and cheaper than kite string. Selection is easy, it comes in black and white. Get a couple of spools of each. Black is better for fishing. Get some beeswax while you’re there. Wax the button warp to make it sew easier and last decades longer.

Being a Mom, I can thread a needle and mend most anything quite nicely ……… IF my glasses are handy and I can see the darn thing !

If you are storing a sewing kit of any kind, remember to switch out that thread periodically as it will weaken and rot over time.

I’m surprised that no one mentioned the sewing awl. Does everything Gerry’s heavy-duty kit will, but you don’t need the palm.

BTW, an awl will sew an overlock stitch, too.
