Rock Island Update

So I mentioned earlier that I sent the Rock Island .45 in for warranty service. It sat unfired during the summer until Phil arrived for the Gunblogger Rendezvous and noticed that the awesomely light and crisp factory trigger came with a nasty tendency for the hammer to follow the slide when you dropped the slide release. I like full-auto as much as anyone, but this had to go back.

Well, out of the blue, I got a call Monday from Arnel at Rock Island Armory who said he’d just opened the box with my gun and confirmed that it was “badly damaged” but he’d repair it right away.
Yesterday he called again to say he’d repaired it, tuned it up, and just shot 8 rounds with no problems and would be shipping it back to me directly.

He didn’t have to make either of those calls, and I wasn’t expecting them. In addition, on a number of points, both conversations were perfect examples of consumer-oriented customer service.

Now, the company I work for has a fair number of customer-service representatives, so I’m familiar with customer service both coming and going, so to speak, and I can say hands down that Arnel provided outstanding customer service to me.

I bought the RIA because it was well-made but cheap inexpensive. With customer service like this, I would not call this a cheap pistol. Kudos, RIA!

How did it get “badly damaged”? It’s a great price and one that I find very interesting. I like the smaller vertical old-school cocking serrations more than the current trend too, and I would change to a standard plug and a short guide rod.

It came from the factory that way. I bought it new and didn’t fire it or do anything other than fondle until Phil arrived and pointed out the problem.

I dislike the vertical cocking serrations, myself. I find the angled (and deeper-cut) ones help me rack the slide. I like forward serrations, too. Call me a wimp, I don’t care.

I really wish they’d put slide-mounted safety knobs on there, like the Beretta 92. Those really work great to rack the slide — just drape index and second finger over ’em and pull. But of course, that way lies madness and flame wars from all the folks who hate slide-mounted safeties for some reason. 🙂
