The Root of the Problem

Ian Welsh, frontpager at FireDogLake blog, shows his ignorance of how money moves around. After blather on and on about why “The Rich” should have their taxes increased, he closes his post with this line.

Everyone can be prosperous. But everyone can’t be rich. Choose what sort of society you want – or have others choose for you.

Why can’t everyone be rich? Oh sure, not everyone can be a Hilton or a Buffett, but there is plenty of loot to go around so that everyone could be rather well off. I believe that it is people like Welsh here who are part of the big circle as to why people stay poor: They keep getting told that they can’t make it no matter how they try.

Even people who have pulled themselves out of near destitution, like one presidential candidate and his wife I could name, tell people this and they eat it up like gummy bears.

Why, I’ll never know.
