A good survival whistle can be made, in the field, from a rifle-round hull. Using your sharp survival knife, carefully cut across the base of the neck of the hull, leaving it attached to the hull by about 3/16″ of brass. Now take your pliers, or a suitable mandrel such as a loaded spire-point round, and bend the cut neck until it is at right angles to the body of the hull.

Put your lips to the neck and blow hard. A shrill sound should come from the hull, more than loud enough to attract a rescue party’s attention to your situation. This sound is not duplicated in the wild by any animal, so it will stand out in the woods.

You can make the sound by just blowing across the open end of a hull, but it’s tricky, as the position of your lips relative to the opening must be exact. The partially-severed neck of the hull does this positioning for you, the right way, every time.

Wow — I’ll have to try that one!
