Travis McGee in the White House

Kevin and Lawdog might be particularly interested in this. Like Kevin’s my worldview was shaped in large part by the writings of Heinlein, Robert Parker, and John D. MacDonald. So I was pleased to read that George W. Bush and Karl Rove included the Travis McGee series by MacDonald in their recent reading contest:

When we got too competitive last year, we both started reading John D. MacDonald mysteries, which are really delicious. He’s a wonderful writer, a Floridian, who writes a wonderful set of mysteries, Travis McGee mysteries, and we both decided that we loved them. We were reading them quickly, enjoying them a lot, and then we realized this was being far too competitive. So we limited the number of John D. MacDonald mysteries we were both reading, so we could get back to the serious stuff.

–Karl Rove

Heinlein, Parker and McGee are the three writers whose pages I dogear the most, to mark the spot where a phrase or concept struck me as worthy of further study or reflection. As Kevin says, “Good stuff.”

How many books did you read in 2006? Bush read 94; Rove, 110.
