Toyota Finally Did It…

…they made a real full-size pickup!

Buried in the promotional ad in my mailbox today (below) is the news that the 2007 Tundras will be available with a double-cab AND 8.1-foot pickup bed.

About freakin’ time, I say.

Toyota sells something like one-sixth the number of pickups as Ford or GM, and I’m pretty sure a big part of it is that Toyota never made a four-seater version that could also hold a standard sheet of plywood in the bed without resorting to bed extender doohickeys.

Until now, that is.

Anyway, once these babies hit the well-used market in a few years, I’m getting one. Toyotas just don’t break.

My good buddy, the Old Rangemaster, who has a ranch in N. Idaho, just bought a used Tundra to replace a Tacoma which he had driven for quite a while. He got a three-year old one (lease return) for well under $20K. It’s a nice truck, and is equally at home climbing the trails on his ranch, or taking the highway on his frequent trips back to Portland.

I’ve got an ’03 Tundra that I got “pre-owned” for a steal. The previous owner had bought the truck and used it for ONE YEAR, and promptly brought it back to the same dealer and traded it in for the ’04 four-door version. I talked the dealer down to $23k plus an additional $2k for my trade-in. It had 17,110 miles. 🙂

I love my Tundra. Love it.

MSN had a cool write-up about the development of the truck, I read this a few weeks ago.

I suspected the Tundra was going to get an upgrade when I realized this summer that the new Tacoma’s are almost the same size as my Tundra.

We have a Tacoma that our daughter drove through most of high school and college, but it’s been ours for the last couple of years. It’s just a baby at 75k miles, but it’s easily the best vehicle we’ve ever owned.

The first time I saw Toyota’s “TRD” logo I nearly spewed coffee all over the inside of my windshield.

I read: “Toyota Turd” Then it occured to me. Sport Turd or Utility Turd, what’s the difference?

Sport Turd, long, shiny and smooth, slender, pointed at each end. I see this TRD RAV4 in VIP parking at Husky Stadium.

Utility Turd, short, blunt, bits of undigested fruit peel and corn sticking out, rough wrinkly texture. This one’s parked on coarse gravel at a construction site alongside I-5.

Every time I see the letters “TRD” on a Toyota sport utility vehicle, I can’t help thinking: “Waste Treatment.”

    Hi !
I have a 96 Toyota Camry. The seatbelt in the left-rear will not retract. I have not has an accident, it just stopped retracting. How can I repair or replace it?

    Thank you

  6. David says:

Well, if you’re at all handy, you can just get the factory manual from your local Toyota dealer (the one for our 97 Camry cost something like $45 ten years ago) and just order a new seat belt and install it yourself.

This isn’t a repair I’ve done or even attempted, so I can’t offer any specific advice.
