More: They refuse to talk about issues

The local Democrat Party has decided that debating the issues with Mike McGavick, the Republican challenger for Maria Cantwell’s Senate seat is a losing proposition, because they are now suing McGavick’s former employer, Safeco Insurance, to discover if he was the one who initiated the use of credit scoring potential customers.

Safeco Insurance, formerly run by Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike McGavick, is fighting a Democratic Party attempt to obtain information about its use of credit scoring to cancel automobile-insurance policies.

As Safeco’s president and CEO, McGavick promoted the use of credit reports as an effective tool to predict who might be at higher risk for an accident.

This is, of course, a blatant partisian attack. They only want this information so that if their guess proves correct, they can attempt to use it as a crudgel against McGavick in campaign commercials and literature.

Some consumer advocates, though, say credit scoring discriminates disproportionately against the poor and minorities.

A credit score is a number generated by a computer analysis of data in a consumer’s credit history.

Safeco relied on credit scoring to cancel more than 2,000 auto-insurance policies nationwide, The Wall Street Journal reported in 2002. The company said it had 2.8 million policies at the time.

Being late on a few bills would not have gotten people cancelled, as can be witnessed by the miniscule number of cancellations. Being a complete credit cheat would.

The Democrats want to use this to call McGavick a racist, but I doubt that if they get the information, they’ll have the numbers to back that up. Not that it’ll stop them from trying.

  1. Kyle says:

Yet another example that the Democrats believe that if you are a minority, you are a natural born shirker. Classy mofos, there.

  2. I think that the Democrat party has completely forgotten that the point of private businesses is to make money.

In the insurance industry, that means avoiding unacceptably high risk. This is why you can’t get flood insurance in Louisiana unless it’s from Uncle Sam (not sure where in the Constitution they found that power.)

They’ve also forgotten that, if you’re really good at providing the leadership necessary for a company to make money, you get paid accordingly.

And nobody has still explained exactly what Ms. Cantwell, Esq. did as corporate counsel for RealNetworks that earned her so much money. At least we know what McGavick did for SafeCo-he made them a very, very profitable company.
