A Holiday, Of Sorts

Today is Earth Day, 2006. People the world over will be celebrating and doing things they believe will help the planet.

How it will help the planet, I don’t know. I’m a Professor of Posteriology, not Earth Science.

I do have a couple students who are, as The Kid would call them, environmentalists, and they started what they called “Communing with Mother Gaia” yesterday, taking time off from classes, and went and did their thing.

Seeing as how I’ve never seen anyone “Commune” with anything, I had my interns complete the week’s instruction and I tagged along.

After a little bit of a hike, Miss Selena found a nice quiet place to “commune”

A little later I caught up with Miss Cherryl “communing” along the beach after a refreshing, though rather cold, swim.

Apparently, “Communing” means sitting quitely and not doing much. There is a lot of staring up at the sky and over the horizon.

But what do I know? My idea of a ‘healthy environment’ is making sure the bearskin rug is clean, the fireplace is lit and having some Barry White in the disc changer.

A few years back I commuted to San Francisco on Amtrak from up near Sacramento. Since there’s no longer a railroad bridge across the Bay, the last leg was made on an Amtrak bus. One bus driver in particular always tuned to a local station that played a lot of Barry White.

We all agreed that there’s something creepy about listening to Barry White at 7am, especially when sitting in comfy seats surrounded by good-looking young professionals. Nobody likes walking into work all hot and bothered. Men and women alike, we all avoided that bus driver when we could.
