When the Washington State Democrats requested the hand recount that went on to get their candidate the win in the Governor’s race, they had to pay $730K to the state as a deposit. After they won the recount, they requested their money back, but were denied when the Republicans filed their court case, and the money was being held pending the outcome. Now that all that business is over with, the Dems want their money back again.
And according to the law they should get their money back, with reasonable interest.
The Secretary of State for Washington is offering them a standard 2%, which is what his office is getting while the money sits in escrow.
“Berendt, who said the party needs the money to pay off nearly $3.5 million it spent defending against the GOP lawsuit, says he thinks an agreement can be reached without more litigation.�
So, the Washington State Dems would not be opposed to suing the state (read: TAXPAYERS) for an exorbitant amount of interest because their people in the King County Elections Office failed to make the hand recount win believable.
