Sunday Rangeday

So Sunday, I head off to the range to warm the barrel up on my Boomershoot rifle. Out of ammo, except for some Aussie ball that was given to me by one of the shooters at the 500yd parctive and some US M80 ball (still in links, don’t ask).

I figured, if nothing else, I’ll get some steady rest practice in.

Glenn, the new rangemaster at the Renton Fish and Game rifle range, and also an employee at Ben’s Loans, a local gun shop, was kind enough to loan me his rest and bags for the morning so that I could do an actual test on the rifle’s accuracy without me needing to resort to using my ‘Pile O Sandbags’ (rest and bags currently on order).

First up a pic of the gear,

I stopped by the smith’s Friday morning and had the mount and rings put on. Unlike last week, when I had only 5 inches of elevation left at 100yds, I now have 35 inches, plus with this new base and the quick detachable rings, I can move the scope and get more.

Here are the results (note: I have gotten flak for being modest with my pistol targets in the past, only showing the average ones. I will not be taking that with this rifle).

I was using a 50ft NRA Smallbore Rifle target (like this one) at 100yds because I am lazy and didn’t want to have to walk out to change the damn thing. The bulls are 1.5 inches across and I was firing 5 shot groups. Aim small/Miss small.

That was the Aussie Ball ammo. I’m looking for a source.

That was the M80 US ball. You can buy it almost anywhere. This is a decent price.

Mea Culpa: I had a couple with the Aussie that had two in the white and more than a couple with the M80 that only put two out of five in the black. No bragging, those were all my fault.

54 days until Boomershoot and I’m working on it.

Most of my groups look like the Average group that you posted. That is with black hills 175 grain match ammo. I occasionally get a better groupings, but I am sure that it will improve once I have a better rifle to shooter interface and much better cheekweld as my sight picture is not consistent shot to shot right now.

My barrel is fully broken in but my stock is absolutely crap. My new stock should be shipping tomorrow or wed. I will have to paint it and bed the action. I will then evaluate the need to bed the scope mount. It probably does not need bedded as it fits flush with no play whatsoever.

As you say boomershoot is coming.
