Range Weekend AAR

Saturday was the March Edition of the Blogger Blastorama held at the City of Olympia Indoor Range. My bout with insomnia last week ended Saturday morning and I overslept this one by close to an hour, but that wasn’t too much of a problem as Headmistress SondraK, her husband JR and her neighbor Nancy had to watch a safety video and take a safety test before the range master would let them on the range (for insurance reasons, first timers only) and that took close to an hour, so all was good as I arrived just as they were finishing up the reqs.

The Oly range is a nice set up that the city police use during the week and the public uses on the weekends. The range is divided into two parts with the qualifying/civilian portion being a twelve bay 50ft pistol and rimfire rifle area and the other portion being open and having a good sized area for just about any type of training the officers need to do. I may have to see if I can get into the patrol clique and see if I can get in during the week. The Seattle PD Spec Ops range is nice, but it is outdoors and has hard structures. I love being able to move wall sections and make it different each time.

Anyway, we had a good ol time punching holes in the paper targets even though the rangemaster was unbending in his denying us the use of my Michael Moore targets. Oh well.

Here is Ms. Sondra shredding the bullseye with her CZ83 in her famous BDU bottoms.

On Sunday, I continued testing some new ammo loads in the Boomershoot rifle at the local rifle range. This week we had some more Hornady and some more Black Hills and I found a deal on PMC Silver and decided to give it a try.

Here are the results. 5 shot groups at 100yds.

If you click on the pic and supersize it you’ll be able to read the numbers of the bulls 1 thru 10. I warmed up the barrel on 1 & 2 with some M80 ball. 3 & 4 were PMC 150gr SPBT Sierra Game King projectiles. 5 & 6 were PMC 168gr HPBT Sierra Match Kings. 7 & 8 were Black Hills 168gr HPBT and 9 & 10 were Hornady 165gr SPBT.

Once again, the cheapest ammo did the best. Head scratching did occur. I’m still trying to make up my mind as to which ammo to buy for Boomershoot and I will hopefully have my mind made up by next weekend when I take it out to 200yds and put some wind on.

Also once again, I am embarassed by how poorly I am able to control this rifle. It could take years before I can come anywhere near it’s level of accuracy. I know that it could have kept the fliers away, especially on bulls 4 & 5, if my skills were a bit better. Working on it.
