I’m Popular!

Or at least my work location is.

Some or most of you may know, I work in the trash and recycling industry. At my place of employ I changed offices within the last month or so. I went from what is called our “Operations Building’ to the scale house at our transfer station.

I went from a slightly smelly locale to a very stinky one. I wrote about it here and here.

As you could guess, not too many folks like to hang out where I am because of the odorous confines. Well, that has all changed! I got one of these!

I opened the door to the scale house the other day and had this very strong coffee smell hit me like a brick. I first wondered if we had just emptied one of the many local coffee packaging factories in town (I live in Seattle, duh!). But no, I was guided to the vestibule area of the building and shown that by the girls in the day crew.

I immediately thought “jeez, what am I running now, an espresso stand!?!”

Again, no. The thing is a completely self serve coffee press. Super strong coffee, 50/50 and decaf.

Want a Mocha? Hit the button brother!

It even serves the best freaking hot chocloate I have had this side of melting the stuff down myself. Which is good because I don’t drink coffee.

AND IT IS ALL FREE!

Now, being that my prime directive at work is that of “Map Geek” and I get paid to know where everthing and everyone is at, I started getting used to the long haulers who were new in town coming into the vestibule and asking for directions when they’d get lost.

It only took about two weeks for my directions requesting customer base to triple as word got out that I was a walking/talking MapQuest program. Before this machine showed up it was not unusual for me to get 6-8 truckers a week in there.

This machine is going to double that.

Oh, and BTW, doun’t let truckers play all tough with you. At least once a night I hear “Oooh, you got cocoa!”

  1. I hope you are not laboring under the fallacy that this is new equipment. I used to do my EMT training at AMR’s main station in Portland, and they’ve had one of those machines for at least ten years that I know of.

But, you are correctimundo about the cocoa, it is SUPERB! I am a coffee drinker, and I thought that the coffee was only average, though.

    rivrdog, out.

Oh hell no, I don’t think this is high technology!

I’ve seen them before in other places, but this is way too nice for my employer to be getting. I’ve been working for them for five years now and the coffee makers we had previously were at least 5 years old when I started working there. And coffee was all they made, after someone spent 5 minutes with the filters and the grounds charger and hooking up the water, etc.

And the coffee tasted like crap. Nearly unconsumable according to those who could stomach it because they had to.
