Who, What, Where, When, Why, How: Part 8

Note: Once again, only one message from John Thomas. But he did eventually reach a way out of the place he was at when we last heard from him, so I’m hopeful this weekend will bring another.

——————–

I could tell that the man who was sent to rescue me, Mack Sauer, was having a very bad day. I didn’t know at the time why those two women worried him so, but I was about to find out.

No sooner had he taken two steps towards them than they had dropped their arm lock and covered the space between them and him, one attcking high and one low. As though expecting this, Mack stuffed the heel of his pistol in the face of the dark haired woman and his left boot into the shoulder of the other.

Unfortunately, and rather oddly, though they were obviously damaged from the initial contact, it didn’t phase them.

With moves like that of cats and the fighting instinct of a pack of dogs, the two women set about savagely taking turns attacking Mack. I started towards them to see if I could help Mack, but he yelled at me to stay back. While I had done what he had told me to do during this rescue so far, I had a feeling that I shouldn’t listen to him now.

I looked around and found a couple tennis ball sized rocks, picked them up and cocked my arm back, waiting for an opportune moment. Mack had been able to grab one the women by her scalp and swiftly toss her a few feet out of the fray. As she sat up and wiped the sand from her eyes I let the rock fly, and it gave an excellent “thunk” when it arrived just behind and below her left ear.

This gave Mack a reprieve from having to cover 360 degrees and he was able to send the other girl to sleepy-time land in short order.

A bit bloddied by the encounter, Mack curtly congratulated me on my aim and started walking over to the helicopter and where it’s former pilots lay. He grabbed the fire extinguisher from behind one of the seats and set about putting the fire int he control panel out.

“Damn, the radio’s cooked! Check those two guys. See if they’ve still got their pistols.”

I rolled the first guy over and was horrified to see that there was a four-inch hole in the visor of his helmet and that if that was his face inside, it looked like someone put a rather large hammer in it via the hole. He was wearing a holster across his chest which contained a revolver. Same horror with the second pilot, and we netted another pistol. I handed them to Mack.

He checked them for ammo and handed one to me. “If you can shoot as well as you can toss a rock, you can have this.” I nodded and remembered that I had to have been over two years since I’d been shooting with Phil. I just figured I’d be careful.

“I’ve found the handhelds and their transponder. Go around the other side and rummage through the emergency packs for some water while I try and reach someone.” Water sounded like a very good idea right about then and he didn’t have to tell me twice. While I was rummaging through the packs I heard Mack calling ” Shake It, Shake It. One. Two. Shake It, Shake It. One. Two. Looking for some fries.”

He repeated himself a couple times until a male voice responded. “We don’t have any fries, but we got onion rings.” Mack smiled and said back “Heya rings, somebody sent rookies to the rendezvous. There were a pair cyberchicks waiting for them here so now someone is going have to write a couple letters letters home. I have the happy meal and the coupon with me safe and sound and we need alternate transport ASAP. Can you see my coupon? Copy?”

“Copy that, Shake. Stand by.” I brought Mack a couple of the water packets as we waited. “Onion rings to shake and happy meal. We see your coupon and advise that you head north for two miles. You’ll be at the river. Go west for another mile. Cherry soda will meet you there. You have 45 minutes. Copy?”

“Copy that.” Mack replied. “Thank you for your order, please pull forward.” was the last thing the radio said before Mack smashed it into the side of the helicopter. “C’mon, Booty, we’ve got a long way to go and short time to get there.”

We set of north at another hefty pace, and it wasn’t long before we were at the river. Heading west, we took it easier though there was no resting. After what seemed like a short time, a woman swung around from behind a tree.

spankable187.jpg

I pointed my revolver, but was told to lower it by Mack. “He’s a little jumpy, Cherry.”

“I could understand that. You have been a busy boy this morning, Mack. Am I to believe what I’m told that you blew up a building, twice, wiping out a household of Haters in the process, then ran six miles and dropped a couple of cyberchicks off at the pool?”

“Yeah. Well, happy meal here helped with the cyberchicks.”

“Why am I the Happy Meal?” I said, both surprising the hell out of myself and instantly realizing that I sounded like the undead.

“He speaks!” said Mack. “I was wonering if you were ever going to say something. Don’t talk too much or you’ll just stress your chords out. By the way, you’re the happy meal because we said so. Let’s get moving Cherry.”

This woman, Cherry, the first woman I could remember for the longest time who was going to try to kill me led the way. West again, along the river until it came to where it dumped into a lake. There was a boat waiting for us, piloted by another woman whom I was introduced to as Root Beer Float.

As she grabbed an oar, she motioned for Mack to grab the other. As they pushed off I finally felt a little relaxed about this “rescue”. Though I didn’t know whom I was being resuced from or by.

But it wouldn’t be long before I was told.

Big Brother’s Living Eyes

First it was the traffic cameras.

Then it was the street cameras that caught you every move.

Then they installed cameras to watch the cameras.

Now they’re paying off-the-clock public employees to bust smokers.

Thousands of council staff are being trained to police the smoking ban in bars, restaurants and shops in England.

Ministers have given councils £29.5m to pay for staff, who will be able to give on-the-spot £50 fines to individuals and take court action against premises.

They will have the power to enter premises undercover, allowing them to sit among drinkers, and will even be able to photograph and film people.

The ban goes into effect on July 1st. By July 2nd I bet that one of these council’s little Napoleon’s abuses his/her power.

“Well love, you can give me free drinks or I can fine your boss. Your choice.”

RNS Quote of the Day: 02/16/07

The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheeps for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as his liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act as the destroyer of liberty. Plainly, the sheep and the wolf are not agreed upon a definition of liberty.

Washington State is moving up in the world

Oh, wait.

From MSN Money:

The state that pays the most in combined state, local and federal taxes, per capita, is Connecticut (35.9%), followed by New York (35.1%), New Jersey (34.3%) and Washington (33.7%).

Damn!

——————–

Double Damn!

HB-2128: Imposing additional business and occupation taxes on major petroleum businesses.

This bill would add a 3% B&O tax surcharge on gross profits.

I swear to fuck that the Democrat Party doesn’t know exactly where the money corporations get to pay taxes comes from. Apprently they think that Exxon/Mobile just has a big-ass money tree that the state can harvest at will or something.

Where’s NOW now?

On Wednesday I made the point that I thought the shooter in Salt Lake City’s Trolley Square Mall shot an inordinate number of women.

Our good man, The Heartless Libertarian made mention that a higer percentage of women hang out at malls, which would account for the percentage of women to men. A very good point and the exact same one that The Wife brought up while we were discussing it at the breakfast table that AM.

However, I should have updated that post to say that that point is quite possibly the reason he chose a mall.

Especially after seeing the guy’s juvenile arrest records.

The shooting rampage at Trolley Square was not Sulejman Talovic’s first act of violence.

At age 12, Talovic was before a judge for allegedly holding a knife over the head of girl while stating, “I’ll kill you,” according to a source who is familiar with the case.

Two years earlier, Talovic was referred to juvenile court for throwing rocks at a little girl.

About the same time, he threatened his parents’ landlord with a knife.

The landlord was a male. The guy claims that he thought that he just brought out the young Sulejman’s protective side and that he never reported it to the police for exactly that reason.

We’ll probably never know a whole lot more about his motives, but I’d put money down that he wouldn’t have chosen a location predominantly populated by males because of some screwed up focus on women.

Which is why I was both happy and sad to hear that more women than men in King County are applying for Concealed Pistol Licenses at last week’s Senate hearing; Happy because women are taking their safety into their own hands and sad because they have to.

Link found at LGF who is getting some crap thrown his way because some of the local SLC media is pissed that he is publishing the shooter’s religious preference over their decision that it had no bearing on the incident.

Paying Union Dues

Does not make a citizen out of you.

Of all the offenders that U.S. District Judge Anna J. Brown has sentenced, a carpenter and union organizer who illegally immigrated from Mexico more than 15 years ago drew one of the biggest crowds.

Instead of spurning Jose Alfredo Cobian of Molalla as a threat to their jobs and wages, fellow union members packed Brown’s Portland courtroom last month in a gesture that reveals the changing relationship between organized labor and immigrant workers.

Many union members continue to support Cobian as he faces the possibility of deportation at a separate immigration hearing today.

How sweet. His union brothers and sisters didn’t go to work so they could support a criminal at his trial.

Sure, he was hardworking, but he was not honest; Not with his co-workers, with his union, his employers or the country that he was residing in. He’d been in the country since 1971 using the stolen birth certificate of a dead infant as his identity and was only caught when someone too smart to be working for the State Department saw something funny when Jose applied for a passport.

At least he’s willing to take it like a man.

“I had a chance to run but chose not to do it,” Cobian said during the Jan. 23 criminal sentencing. “I did something wrong, and when you do that, you pay for your mistakes. And that’s what I’m here to do. It’s something I want to teach my kids.”

Buh-bye, Jose. Hope you make it back the right way next time.

Wouldn’t It Be Neat!

It’s been a good long time since we’ve done this here at RNS. So long, in fact, that it has rolled out of the main archives and currently resides in my harddrive.

I was reminded that we used to do this by Admiral Ahab at the WhatWouldJohnWayneDo blog when he posted one a couple weeks back.

In a nutshell, the premise is: What would you like to see the firearms industry produce in your perfect world?

One of mine actually came true! Someone is making a (relatively) inexpensive and very reliable clone of the HK-91.

I asked for it, and when someone made it, I bought it (The Hun Bastard); proof that I will buy what I ask for if they make it.

I’ll list a few of my wants here and you follow up with yours in the comments. If we get enough participation, I’ll put it in a permanent spot on the sidebar. Ahab went into calibers in his post, but I feel that there are quite enough calibers currently out there to choose from, so I won’t be. However, do feel free to leave your new ammo suggestions in the comments as well.

I’ll begin with my #1 from last time, since it is still my #1

#1: Wouldn’t it be neat if someone would please redesign the M35 Browning Hi Power to fire .45ACP and not change anything else!?!

I don’t care about the currently popular wave of Combat Tupperware on the market. I also don’t care that DA/SA and DAO guns are also currently very popular. If someone made an M35 in .45ACP, dealers wouldn’t be able to keep them in stock, even if they cost $1000 for a plain jane model. I’d buy two, even over the wife’s protests and I think that the proponents of the Plastic Fantastic guns would soon see the error of their ways when they wrapped their paws around a real pistol.

The pinnacle of JMB’s pistol designs shooting the most effective stopping power caliber available to concealable semi-auto pistols. Nuf said. (we’ll be discussing .40 and 10mm next week, I promise).

#2: Wouldn’t it be neat if someone other than Springfield Armory was building M1As (or at least quality manufactured and reasonably priced replacement parts)?

The only reason M1As cost what they do is because there is only one full-bore manufacturer and a couple of small ones. These rifles are not rocket science; you use the proper steel with the proper heat treatment, machine them to spec and assemble them. (And why do replacement parts have to be either wallet breaking due to scarcity or complete junk?)

#3: Same question goes to M1 Garands (but at least you can still get rebuilders/shooters from CMP).

Somebody buy up the Winchester name and equipment and start churning these things out by the thousands at under $1000 and I’ll buy five.

#4: Wouldn’t it be neat if you could buy a bolt action receiver, from say Remington, for less than the cost of an entire rifle?

Barak started out as a 700ADL rifle, bought new for $385 dollars. Last time I checked, Brownells wanted $400 for just a receiver and then I still have to pay someone to strip the trigger and bluing from it. Why can I not buy an “in the white”, triggerless, unbarrelled action for $250 to $300?

I know that it costs more than $85 to roll a barrel and screw it in and machine cut and finish or mold and finish a stock. So why isn’t Remington saving themselves some cash and gaining a few new customers by doing so?

#5: Same question as #3, but for Magnum caliber bolt actions (current minimum cost is approx. $695).

Like I said, I don’t really have any special ammo requirements; .22LR, .22-250, .25-06, .30-30, 7.62×51, .30-06, .300WinMag, .338Lapua and .50BMG are plenty for rifles, TYVM. And 22LR, .380ACP, 9mm, .38Special, .357Mag, .45ACP and .44Mag are plenty for handguns.

If we weren’t wasting time with new crap like the over-hyped Short Magnums (WTF kind of oxymoron is “short magnum” anyway?) we could be making more 7.62×51 (a mil-surp cartridge that currently costs over $0.50 a round. Again WTF!?!)

OK, now it is your turn.

The Soundboard: Waiting to Wait Edition

This song exemplifies my situation Sunday night and all day Monday and Tuesday as I tried to get 2400MB of video loaded up at 50K a second and then wait for the “random” GoogleVideo screening process to take place.

Angry Chair – Alice in Chains

I’m not so sure that the Offical RNS blogstation Chair was angry, but I was sitting in it and I certainly wasn’t in a good mood.

Btw, this bit of tunage contains one of Cantrell’s best solos.
