On Wednesday I made the point that I thought the shooter in Salt Lake City’s Trolley Square Mall shot an inordinate number of women.
Our good man, The Heartless Libertarian made mention that a higer percentage of women hang out at malls, which would account for the percentage of women to men. A very good point and the exact same one that The Wife brought up while we were discussing it at the breakfast table that AM.
However, I should have updated that post to say that that point is quite possibly the reason he chose a mall.
Especially after seeing the guy’s juvenile arrest records.
The shooting rampage at Trolley Square was not Sulejman Talovic’s first act of violence.
At age 12, Talovic was before a judge for allegedly holding a knife over the head of girl while stating, “I’ll kill you,” according to a source who is familiar with the case.
Two years earlier, Talovic was referred to juvenile court for throwing rocks at a little girl.
About the same time, he threatened his parents’ landlord with a knife.
The landlord was a male. The guy claims that he thought that he just brought out the young Sulejman’s protective side and that he never reported it to the police for exactly that reason.
We’ll probably never know a whole lot more about his motives, but I’d put money down that he wouldn’t have chosen a location predominantly populated by males because of some screwed up focus on women.
Which is why I was both happy and sad to hear that more women than men in King County are applying for Concealed Pistol Licenses at last week’s Senate hearing; Happy because women are taking their safety into their own hands and sad because they have to.
