Heading Out

This morning were loaded up and rollin’ to the Temple of Boom. I have some image posts lined up for the days while we’re gone, in case we can’t get off our collective butts for long enough to post from the site.

Yesterday I was thinking of a little road music and just happened to find a track I could bend to my will.

Orofino by Morning

Orofino by mornin’, east of Lewiston
Boomershoot at the Huffman place, is what is going on
When that sun is high above the western sky
I’m hittin’ boomers out at 710
Orofino by mornin’
Orofino I’ll be there.

Been going for almost a decade, my truck even knows the way
Lost some tarps and tripod somewhere along the way
I got real hot date with my .308 and hope the wind calls are fine
Orofino by mornin’
Orofino on my mind.

Orofino by mornin’, east of Lewiston
If you’re smart and play safe you’ll get what’s going on
I spend about about half a grand earned by my own hands
You know its too much fun to be free
Orofino by mornin’
Orofino’s where I’ll be.

And here is your backing track

I’ll talk with you all again soon.

Not enough notice

I definitely need this for Boomershoot. I wish I had found it a couple weeks ago.

Obviously, a shining star

And future public representative of the Obama Administration

The top watchdog for the Department of Homeland Security altered and delayed investigations at the request of senior administration officials, compromising his independent role as an inspector general, according to a new report from a Senate oversight panel.

Charles K. Edwards, who served as acting DHS inspector general from 2011 through 2013, routinely shared drinks and dinner with department leaders and gave them inside information about the timing and findings of investigations, according to the report from an oversight panel of the Homeland Security and Government Operations Committee.

A year-long bipartisan investigation by the panel also found that Edwards improperly relied on the advice of top political advisers to then-Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and acquiesced to their suggestions about the wording and timing of three separate reports.

The Washington Post obtained an advance copy of the Senate document, which will be released to the public Thursday.

I hope they squeeze his nuts so hard (figuratively) that the President puts his head in his hands.

Not anymore

It used to be “To Protect and Serve”.

Now it’s “We know you did something wrong. Give up your rights so we can figure out what it is”

Which is stupid, because that is too big to even fit on the side of the car.

DOJ Whines That A Warrant To Search A Mobile Phone Makes It More Difficult To Catch Criminals

The US government has entered its reply brief in the US vs. Wurie case and its argument in favor of warrantless searches of arrestees’ cell phones contains some truly terrible suppositions.

Police Chief: Not Wanting To Talk To Police Officers Is ‘Odd’

The backstory is this: a woman was walking down the street when a motorcycle cop approached her, asked her if she lived in the area and if she would talk to him. She says his approach made her feel uncomfortable, so she refused and continued on her way.

This was followed shortly thereafter by the cop dismounting, chasing her down, tackling her and placing her under arrest. The police chief claims this arrest was for “walking on the wrong side of the road,” (as well as “evading arrest” and “resisting arrest”) despite the fact that the woman wasn’t ultimately charged with anything.

How can you walk down the wrong side of the road? As long as you’re not in the road, I can’t figure out what the problem might be.

Fire Sale

Due to some late cancelations, Joe is having a half-off sale for Boomershoot spots.

We have had quite a few cancellations due to things like Obamacare premium hikes, a funeral (the Oso mudslide), and various health issues. What this means for you is, due to the cancellations, I’m putting the remaining positions on sale. The High Intensity, the Private Boomershoot Fireball, and the main event on Sunday are all half price for the next few days. This does not apply to the Precision Rifle Clinic or Field Fire.

Tell your friends this is a rare opportunity. Boomershoot prices have not been this low in many years and may never be this low again.

Joe is right. I think you stand a better chance of seeing a unicorn pooping purple twinkies than you do seeing this happen again.

As for my title post; Ry is in charge of the Opening Fireball again this year. There will be fire. I work with 7000 degrees over my head and stand behind 30,000 degrees on a daily basis and I am still pretty darn sure that I’ll be impressed.

Making it up

The psychiatric industry has discovered another “disorder” to cover for bad parenting.

Modern psychiatry has become a hotbed of corruption, particularly the kind that seeks to demonize and declare mentally ill anyone who deviates from what is regarded as the norm. This is abundantly evident in the latest installment of the industry’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM, which dubs people who do not conform to what those in charge declare to be normal as mentally insane.

The so-called “condition” for why a person might choose to resist conformity has been labeled by the psychiatric profession as “oppositional defiant disorder,” or ODD. The new DSM defines this made-up disease as an “ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile and defiant behavior,” and also lumps it in alongside attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, another made-up condition whose creator, Dr. Leon Eisenberg, admitted it to be phony on his death bed.

As you might suspect from this type of open-ended description, almost any personal behavior perceived by someone else to be undesirable or strange might be categorized as symptomatic of ODD. Children who throw temper tantrums or fight with their siblings, for instance, might be declared to have this supposed mental illness, as might children who express disagreement with their parents or teachers.

Hey mental health professionals, when can we expect to get a disorder declared for those who blame a tool for the actions of people? Or maybe one for people who only believe “facts” that help their position? Can we at least get one for people who believe that banning racial preferences is racist?

In Economics News

If you’ve ever wondered why 40 = 40 = 40, hit this link and read about Gummi Worms and Sweet Tarts. Also, why government intervention cannot stop stupid people from doing things that hurt their economic standing and causing more government intervention.

If you want to see corporations leave your state, just do this:

A California effort to lead a national debate over the growing wage gap between CEOs and average workers took its first step in the state Legislature on Thursday with support from Democratic lawmakers, organized labor and former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich.

Reich, who served in the Clinton administration during the 1990s, said the bill would reward “responsible” companies with lower tax rates and help the middle class while countering a trend that he said endangers the underpinnings of the American economy.

SB1372 would punish companies that pay CEOs more than 100 times the median wage of their workers by imposing a higher corporate tax rate. Companies with less of a wage gap would be rewarded with a lower rate.

If I was that worried/pissed off that my bosses boss was making 101 times what I was making, I’d just find a job with another company. But then again, I took the time to develop job skills.

No Sunday Funnies

I didn’t see anything I liked. Instead you’ll get the tale of why I wasn’t reloading ammo for Boomershoot yesterday.

Dave, David and I set up the Boomeragio at the far end of the line, complete with couch, tables, a hammock and a grill. We believe that just because we’re out of doors in the middle of a field there is no reason to be uncomfortable. We’re grown ass men who own vehicles with enough cargo space and just make it happen.

Especially this year. There was a snafu in getting on-site food for Friday and Saturday, so it will be more important to be able to cook up some grub than usual. There will be someone there on Sunday with Chinese food, if I remember correctly.

Sadly, when I went out to test the Boomeragio grill and make it ready for transport yesterday morning, it suffered a critical failure and almost blew me up.

If you look in the middle of the pic you’ll see two foil hoses that come up from the bottom of the grill. I lit the grill up, and while there were little flames coming out of some of the burner holes, most of the flame was coming out of the middle of the backside of the burner at a length of about eight inches.

After the above inspection, I immediately went inside and sat down at the RNS blogging station and looked up the part. Long story short, while the part itself was only $20, to get it here in time for Boomershoot was an extra $30. There were no local parts in stock that I could find in 30 minutes on the phone.

Not being one to despair, I immediately hopped on CraigsList and contacted a of couple ads. The first guy to call back was about 30 minutes away so I re-emailed the second guy and told him to disregard mind my previous email. I arrived at the first guy’s house, hooked up some gas for a function test, flipped him a Jackson and loaded it up.

Boom bitches! $20. The electronic ignitor and all five burners work. If you’re wondering why it was only $20, you should see the grill he’s replaced it with. He needed the grill gone to fit the new one on his patio. He said that he had told his wife that he would have it sold before she got home from work. She bet him he couldn’t. I had it in the truck within two hours of his ad going up. I decided not to tell him that I thought that was worth a replay of Steak and BJ day. How he handles that win is up to him.

Barron already asked and I think I forgot to give him a thumbs up for bringing his eats up for some heat, but yes bring your food down, man. In fact, I’m opening up the Boomeragio grill to all those who ask. Just leave some room on the grill for us, OK?

Update: Unless I can find a reasonable couch within reasonable driving distance before Thursday, there may not be a couch this year. Also, since I was laid off, I really don’t have anywhere to dispose of something that large without paying through the nose to the county to get rid of it. On the plus side, I might be able to see out the back of my canopy on the way to Orofino this year.

Das Benchen Schuten

So, I am a couple hours behind in completing the bench I plan on using at Boomershoot, but it will be done before the close of business on Tuesday night.

20140424_210908a (click to enbiggen)

Here it is without the top mounted.

I attempted to make the seat more easily installed/removed, but that turned into about 3lbs of fail and I had to start from scratch with a new bracket. That set me about 2hrs behind from being able to bring it home.

So, around 1730PST on Tuesday night, picture me installing the top onto the bar (I already have the holes drilled and counterbored), installing a couple shims to try and get rid of a wobble in the seat, cutting and bending some locking pins, and building the stinger (a surprise feature!).

More pics on Wednesday.
