The Soundboard: No Particular Reason Edition

Yep, no particular reason.

OK, maybe worked sucked again.

I would actually go this Repub event

It looks as though some New hampshire Republicans are beginning to see which side their bread is buttered on.

GOP Fundraiser to feature machine gun shoot

City Republicans will be packing some serious firepower at their next party fundraiser.

Tired of the usual chicken dinners, the Manchester Republican Committee is planning to arm supporters next month with Uzis, M-16 rifles and other automatic weapons for a day of target practice at a Pelham firing range.

“The thought just struck me one day: a machine gun shoot. What the heck?” said Jerry Thibodeau, the committee chairman.

Thibodeau, who is himself a hunter and skeet shooter, pitched the Aug. 5 event as a fun social gathering, as well as a demonstration of the party’s support for Second Amendment rights.

If I’d have been able to get the day off work, I would have attended the campaigning done by Rep. Dave Reichert of Washington’s 8th District at a pistol range in Bellevue last year (even though his administration of the King County Sheriff’s Department continued the longtime policy of roundfiling all applications for Class 3 items).

It kind of makes me feel warm and fuzzy when the politicians aren’t afraid to be around heavily armed citizens.

Especially when the response from the Dems is thus

The concept prompted shudders across the political aisle. Chris Pappas, the city Democratic party chairman, called the event “not just in poor taste; it is downright offensive.”

“The citizens of Manchester have lived through a deadly spike in violent crime the past year-and-a-half, despite the campaign promises of (Mayor) Frank Guinta to lower crime rates,” Pappas said. “That the mayor’s political party would seek to glorify the use of machine guns for political gain is unconscionable.”

It’s not the guns, pussy. It’s the criminals.

RNS Quote of the Day: 07/26/07

A Thursday Trifecta of truly disturbing proportions

Surely there will be some nonhuman animals whose lives, by any standards, are more valuable than the lives of some humans.

Peter Singer - Godfather of the animal rights movement in his book: Animal Liberation: A New Ethic for Our Treatment of Animals, 2nd edition, 1990.

There are some circumstances, for example, where the newborn baby is severely disabled and where the parents think that it’s better that child should not live, when killing the newborn baby is not at all wrong … not like killing the chimpanzee would be. Maybe it’s not wrong at all.

Peter Singer

Your dog can show you when he or she wants to go for a walk and equally for nonviolent sexual contact, your dog or whatever else it is can show you whether he or she wants to engage in a certain kind of contact.

Peter Singer

This is like the third or second one of these freaks that likes to talk about having sex with animals.

The Welsh can be damn useful sometimes

If it works, set me up, bubba.

A breakthrough technology developed by three engineering lads in Wales could hold the key to converting carbon emissions into beneficial substances such as biodiesel, methane gas, and fertilizer.

The cleverly-dubbed Greenbox was designed to be fixed underneath one’s vehicle where it could gobble up carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide until the next fill up, at which point the box would be switched out for a new one while the filled canister headed to a bioreactor for processing.

Sounds complicated, we know, but strapping these bad boys beneath every gasoline-powered vehicle in a given nation could boost its biofuel production exponentially — all without spending another penny (or pence) on research. Unsurprisingly, the trio of inventors are staying mum until they (hopefully) convince the government or a private company to grab ahold, but unless these boxes learn to swap themselves, we can’t imagine too many individuals bustin’ out the creeper for underbody work at each fuel stop.

Oh puh-leeze. This guy apparently has never seen a gasket.

Hell, if they’d switch them out like propane tanks at the station and give me credits toward my next fill-up, I’d be on this like stink on shit.

Racism and Sodapop

You might ask what the two of them have in common.

Andrew Martin of the NYT will tell you

McDonald’s stock price has quadrupled in the last four years, and the company has reported positive same-store sales, an important industry measure, every month since April 2003.

Given those results, a new McDonald’s menu item is a bit of a stunner. Remember Supersize sodas? They’re back, except this time the chain is trying a new name. Meet the “Hugo,” a 42-ounce drink now available for as little as 89 cents in some markets. A Hugo soda contains about 410 calories.

McDonald’s might as well have called it the Tubbo.

Making matters worse, Hugo ads are available in several languages, making sure that minorities — who are disproportionately affected by the obesity epidemic — are aware of the budget beverage.

I can’t think of a minority that speaks a different language who are fatter than white people per capita. If Martin is talking about Latinos, he’ll need to provide at least some evidence to convince me.

But even a nutritioninst can tell us why McDonalds is gving the supersized another try, even if it never occured to Andrew Martin.

Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition at New York University, says she feels some sympathy for fast-food restaurants. Most are public companies that must continually find ways to grow, and she says that offering bigger sizes is an easy way to do it.

“The companies are stuck,” she said. “They must grow. Therefore they are looking for products that are going to sell. And guess what? The healthy ones don’t.”

Ayup. You can promote the hell out of chicken wraps and rabbit food salads every hour of every day for the next five years (which McDonalds has been doing) and people will still go to Che-McD’s for a Big Mac or the Double Quarter Pounder w/Cheese.

OK, now I’m hungry.

Watermelons in search of titles

They sold their soul for the title of “Council”

President Vladimir Putin triumphed in securing the 2014 Winter Olympic Games for Sochi, but behind Russian national pride is the story of a nasty struggle over possible damage to the Caucasus Mountains.

It began several years ago when Russian companies and government agencies began setting aside environmental norms to clear the way for the Olympics bid. New sports complexes, a press center, hotels and other facilities would have to be constructed around the existing mountain resort of Krasnaya Polyana. Russian prestige was on the line, but there was also the profit motive of keeping Russian millionaires skiing at home rather than at their preferred upscale resorts in Europe.

The obstacle was Sochi National Park and the bordering buffer zone of the Western Caucasus nature reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site. In 2006, existing laws were nullified by the Russian government to rezone areas of the national park that contained original-growth forest and were home to endangered species.

Forest clear-cutting then began, to prepare the site. New rules were even adopted for development in the buffer zone of the neighboring reserve. All this took place with no public hearing or published environmental-impact assessment.

Local activists formed Environmental Watch on the North Caucasus, with Andrey Rudomakha as their spokesman. WWF-Russia (Worldwide Fund for Nature, formerly World Wildlife Fund) and Greenpeace also protested publicly, and Greenpeace initiated a lawsuit in the Russian courts.

Then, a strange turn of events occurred in Moscow. In late 2006, WWF and Greenpeace announced they were satisfied that construction associated with the Sochi bid would follow green norms, even as Greenpeace lost its lawsuit. The government, rather after the fact, named a “Sochi 2014 Ecological Council,” which included respected academics and representatives from Greenpeace and WWF-Russia.

This turn of events left local environmental activists out in the cold, with Rudomakha commenting that the WWF change of heart seemed “strange and surprising.”

The eco-socialists do have a price that they’ll sell their beliefs for: You have to make them feel important.

And these ones will. Right up until they disagree with Putin and he has them killed.

Which will give you a clue as to why they’re so unhappy with Cheney and have been chasing him around like a pack of rabid weasles for seven years.

When Cheney formed a National Energy Policy Group shortly after he and Bush took office, he spoke to those in the industry that actually produces energy and disregarded the eco-socialists who would prefer that we all eat raw food and have no hot running water.

At 10 a.m. on April 4, 2001, representatives of 13 environmental groups were brought into the Old Executive Office Building for a long-anticipated meeting. Since late January, a task force headed by Vice President Cheney had been busy drawing up a new national energy policy, and the groups were getting their one chance to be heard.

Cheney was not there, but so many environmentalists were in the room that introductions took up “about half the meeting,” recalled Erich Pica of Friends of the Earth. Anna Aurilio of the U.S. Public Interest Group said, “It was clear to us that they were just being nice to us.”

A confidential list prepared by the Bush administration shows that Cheney and his aides had already held at least 40 meetings with interest groups, most of them from energy-producing industries. By the time of the meeting with environmental groups, according to a former White House official who provided the list to The Washington Post, the initial draft of the task force was substantially complete and President Bush had been briefed on its progress.

Please feel free to leave your suggestions for a title that Cheney could have given them that would have made them happy in the comments.

I’d call it “Success”

And I think you would too.

McClatchy Newspapers reporter, Margaret Talev, bemoans the fact that the Dems haven’t fulfilled a very vast majority of their campaign promises. The culrpit of this national tragedy?

Republicans, of course.

Constant filibuster threat is tying the Senate in knots

Senate Republicans this year are threatening filibusters to block more legislation than ever, a pattern that’s rooted in — and could increase — the pettiness and dysfunction in Congress.

The trend has been evolving for 30 years. The reasons behind it are too complex to pin on one party. But it has been especially pronounced since the Democrats’ razor-thin win in last year’s election, giving them effectively a 51-49 Senate majority, and the Republicans’ exile to the minority.

Seven months into the current two-year term, the Senate has held 42 “cloture” votes aimed at shutting off extended debate — filibusters, or sometimes only the threat of one — and moving to up-or-down votes on contested legislation. Under Senate rules that protect a minority’s right to debate, these votes require a 60-vote supermajority in the 100-member Senate.

Democrats have trouble mustering 60 votes; they have fallen short 22 times this year. That’s largely why they haven’t been able to deliver on campaign promises.

By sinking a cloture vote last week, Republicans successfully blocked a Democratic bid to withdraw most combat troops from Iraq by April, even though a 52-47 Senate majority voted to end debate.

Republicans also have blocked votes this year on immigration legislation, a no-confidence resolution for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and major legislation dealing with energy, labor rights and prescription drugs.

Nearly one in every six roll-call votes in the Senate this year has been a cloture vote. If this pace of blocking legislation continues, this 110th Congress will be on track to roughly triple the previous record number of cloture votes – 58 each in the two Congresses from 1999-2002, according to the Senate Historical Office.

I looked and looked, but I am unable to find any MSM report who whined when the Republican controlled Congress was deadlocked 58 times a session.

I was, however, able to find a number of articles that were cheerleading the filibusters though.

Yes, Virginia, that liberal media.

RNS Quote of the Day: 07/25/07

Somebody here is confused, and it’s not me.

We are not superior. There are no clear distinctions between us and animals.

Dr. Michael W. Fox, former Vice President of The Humane Society in Washingtonian Magazine, February 1990

While Dr. Fox may have more letters after his name than I do, I think I could put to keyboard a hundred distinctions between my self and just about any animal he could name.

The fact that I’ve never caught my cat downloading kittyporn, or using the compter much at all, being just the first of many.

And here the Humane Society is supposed to be “mainstream” and not radical in the least bit. Though I am glad to see the word “Former” included in his title.

I’d like to make a correction

I saw an error in the Seattle Times the other day which I would like to correct at this time.

The original intro to this article:

As part of their campaign to soothe an anxious middle class, congressional Democrats are preparing legislation that would significantly expand federal aid to the most obvious victims of the global economy: workers whose jobs move to other countries or are lost to imports.

How it was actually meant to read before the leftists who write and edit the local papers got ahold of it:

As part of their campaign to use your tax money to bribe people into voting for them, congressional Democrats are preparing to pay for the chosen lifestyles of modern day buggy whip manufacturers.

Sorry, just had to fix that. It was bugging me to no end.

No Heart or Mind

The dweebies over at Jane Hamsher’s FireDogLake blog were joined by a supposed Iraqi Pediatric Oncologist calling herself Maryam. (With all the fakes coming out the woodwork to whine with the left as of late, I included the “supposed” tag as no proof is offered in any link I could find)

Maryam really, really doesn’t like Americans (unless, of course, you think George Bush is Hitler, at which point she’ll gladly talk to you) and she really, really does like to be forced to wear the hijab.

From her comments in this post at FDL:

Stop telling lies to yourself American. We know that your racist brutal murdering war criminal troops came from your society and reflect its values. we know that because we see how they behave and have to bury their victims. If you are stupid enough to think we feel anything but hatred and contrempt for your soldiers and the country that sent them to make war on my people then you are a fool.

As to Saddam bad though he was your country is far worse.

I’d like to see Pelosi’s log in records. Sounds just like something she’d say.
