Even newer than the New New

Busy weekend after a busy first week back to school. I’ve been spending my days in “The TIG Room” at school learning how to use high frequency voltage to weld small pieces of sheet metal together by pressing down on a pedal with my left foot, holding the “torch” in my right hand steady while moving my left hand side-to-side with the filler rod.

Not the best time I’ve ever had. After all the big sweeping movements of MIG, Flux Core and Arc/Stick welding before this, it makes it difficult to slow back down and control the movement of your hands to within 1/32″.

Anyway, after school, I do MY projects.

This is before I placed the centerpiece and put on the coats of clear gloss. It is now only waiting for its plexi-top.

The foot is a brake disk from a 1/2-ton van and the leg is one of the cams from the Ford DOHC four-banger whose name is escaping me (I think it’s a 2-liter). Standard t-case chain surround and planetary gear center (so it rotates).

Taking a tip from the previous comments, I’m trying to include more “stuff” and fewer nuts and bolts. Lots of gears (timing and transmission), a timing belt tensioner pully and a couple of FabShop skills test (gone wrong and right) items. Most noticeable is the big fookin wrench. It says “Coho – San Francisco” and is 1-3/4″ on one end and 2″ on the other. Not really sure what it is from or for, but I found it at a garage sale.

I made a GMail account for Kadath Heavy Industries yesterday and have ordered new business cards with the address on there. It’s the name of the company (all one word) at the mentioned email company. If you or someone you know is interested in this table, or something of this nature, or any other metal design/fabrication/repair, have them contact me there.

Because they can’t hate the guy enough

A leftist known for writing bad action flicks is going to debut his directing skills on a movie that covers the Rathergate scandal.

Robert Redford is going to play Dan Rather and Cate Blanchett is going to play Mary Mapes.

No word on who will be playing GWB, but five will get you ten that it’ll likely be someone who hates the guy and who’ll play him out to be a minor variation of Major T.J. Kong.

Sunday Funnies

Only a couple good ones this week, so I’m including a panel that in proof positive that the left’s moral equivalency skills are lacking.

Firsties!

I would like to thank all the folks who have stopped by to respond to my posts about the tables I have been building. The feedback has been great and it helped me decide to make more of them to help keep the coffers full during my remaining days as a student.

I am happy to announce that showcasing them here has also led to my first non-local sale.

Daniel S. from the blog Among the Leaves was smitten by one the tables I built last weekend and as of about 1500 hours this afternoon, it will be on its way to his home in Texas.

Daniel’s blog byline says “Hunting, Fishing, Bushcraft and Life Among the Leaves”. He writes about all as that, and he does product reviews, reloading, rifle building and excellent Weekend Zen pics. You should check him out.

I spent the last two days after school doing the finish polishing and clear coating of the table to get it ready for him and I really hope he gets years of enjoyment from it. If I were a better photographer, you could see how nicely the top and foot cleaned up and how the clear coat plus-one’d them both. But I’m a simple guy with a camera phone, so this is the best shot I could get at that hour of the evening.

Coming soon!

Hopefully to a town near you and I.

This carnival, being put on by a group calling themselves Generation Opportunity, will be on the National Mall on the 23rd of this month. They will also be doing a 10-12 city tour, though I cannot find the cities or the exact dates, either on their site or from the leftist blogs whining about it.

For a group partially funded by those eevviill Koch Bros., they sure don’t know how to do publicity very well.

Take Caution

You may laugh so hard you have a stroke

This is the headline, byline, photo and caption to US News’ story about the opening of legal marijuana stores in Seattle

Untitled

They get their legal weed, and are now bitching about how they get it by calling it a “Soviet-style market”.

A large majority of them are fine with socialism in every other aspect of people’s lives. But now that they have to deal with it, it’s bad.

Saw this coming down the pipe

I even have a reply ready.

UN Urges US to Designate Immigrants as Refugees

United Nations officials are pushing for many of the Central Americans fleeing to the U.S. to be treated as refugees displaced by armed conflict, a designation meant to increase pressure on the United States to accept tens of thousands of people currently ineligible for asylum.

Officials with the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees say they hope to see a regional agreement on that status Thursday when migration and interior department representatives from the U.S., Mexico, and Central America meet in Nicaragua. The group will discuss updating a 30-year-old declaration regarding the obligations nations have to aid refugees.

While such a resolution would lack any legal weight in the United States, the agency said it believes “the U.S. and Mexico should recognize that this is a refugee situation, which implies that they shouldn’t be automatically sent to their home countries but rather receive international protection.”

“International Protection”? You mean that Belgium will take some of them? And France? How about we see how many of them would like to relocate to China?

Or, since the UN is so darned worried about these people, they send supplies and other aid (that you and I paid for with our tax dollars as the UN’s largest beneficiary) to the border states and they GTFO of our business.

Yet another reason

To never vote for the Democratic Party member.

Small businesses in Seattle have until 2021 to pay the minimum wage of $15.

But even though he has only 8 employees, Subway franchise owner Matthew Hollek will have to start paying them higher wages by 2017. The reason: The law counts him as a large employer because he’s part of a massive national chain.

Hollek said the distinction will hurt.

“In three years, my wages will be up by 60%, but the sandwich shop next door won’t have to do it yet. I’ll have to charge more, and he can charge less than me,” said Hollek, who has been a franchise owner since 1997.

Seattle’s city council approved a timetable earlier this month for how the $15 minimum wage would be phased in from its current wage floor of $9.32. Businesses with fewer than 500 workers get until 2021 to phase it in.

Companies with 500 or more employees must begin paying $15 in 2017. Chains like Subway, McDonald’s (MCD) or Burger King (BKW) are in the latter category, even if many of their restaurants are run by small business owners.

Franchisees are up in arms over this. The International Franchise Association has sued the city of Seattle, charging that the ordinance unfairly penalizes franchisees.

The average franchisee at the association employs 11 people.

The Democrats on the Seattle City Council were told this would happen. They just didn’t care. They would rather brown-nose for votes than say “No” to the children who want everything but are willing to give up nothing.

By 2021, when this thing goes into full effect, the majority of the people who were hollering for the $15 an hour wage will have moved out of the city because it is too expensive to live there.

Oh, the hate

Some rural fellas are making their trucks “roll coal”.

The left has their dainties in a wad about it.

Pickup trucks customized to spew black smoke into the air are quickly becoming the newest weapon in the culture wars.

“Coal Rollers” are diesel trucks modified with chimneys and equipment that can force extra fuel into the engine causing dark black smoke to pour out of the chimney stacks. These modifications are not new, but as Slate’s Dave Weigel pointed out on Thursday, “rolling coal” has begun to take on a political dimension with pickup drivers increasingly viewing their smokestacks as a form of protest against environmentalists and Obama administration emissions regulations.

Last month, Vocativ noted many coal rollers focus their fumes on “nature nuffies,” or people who drive hybrids, and “rice burners,” or Japanese-made cars.

“The feeling around here is that everyone who drives a small car is a liberal,” a roller named Ryan told Vocativ. “I rolled coal on a Prius once just because they were tailing me.”

Weigel spoke to a seller of coal rolling customization equipment who described why some drivers see spewing smoke as a political protest.

“I run into a lot of people that really don’t like Obama at all,” the salesperson said. “If he’s into the environment, if he’s into this or that, we’re not. I hear a lot of that. To get a single stack on my truck—that’s my way of giving them the finger. You want clean air and a tiny carbon footprint? Well, screw you.”

This should be considered an appropriate reaction to the guy in the hybrid with his nose in the air and a government that wants to tell you how to do just about anything, especially if it is fun.

I do not “roll coal” in my diesel and I have been “spoken to” at least two times that come to mind by leftists in parking lots around the topic of why I feel the need to single occupant my truck. What do I haul with it? Why am I driving it and not hauling anything? Don’t I have another vehicle I could drive instead of it?

When I answered that last question, I said yes, I had a 20 year old Jeep with no catalytic converter on the exhaust that I usually drive, but that that day I felt the urge to powerslide around the cloverleaf on the highway interchange and the Jeep didn’t have the wheelbase for it. Gave her the finger and climbed into the cab.

What is it with some people’s inability to mind their own damn business? I’m unemployed and still have no free time. Where do they find the time to worry about what everyone else is doing?

Now, a decision needs to be made

By folks who voted for Obama and love his intrusion into the healthcare marketplace, and also like their 2nd Amendment rights.

The study, published as a research letter in the June 2014 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine, is believed to be the first to examine doctors’ attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors regarding their emerging role in the assessment of competency for the licensing of concealed weapons.

…..

“There are things we can do now to change this,” Dr. Kathy Barnhouse, a professor of family medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and co-author of the study, said in a press release. “We discovered that the great majority of physicians feel that assessments for concealed weapons permits should best be done by providers specifically trained in making such assessments, presumably with standards to make assessments about mental and physical competence.”

Dr. Adam Goldstein, a study co-author and professor in the department of family medicine at UNC, thinks the problem lies with a lack of uniform standards and public policies across states to determine what is dangerous enough to justify denying a permit.

“Doctors are qualified to do this, but they need guidance,” Goldstein said in a telephone interview. “The physician that best knows the patient is the best type of physician to do these assessments. In most cases, that would be the primary care physician. Doctors who have special training, who may not be the primary care physicians, may also be qualified to do it. The type of questions being asked involve physical and mental capacities. The problem is there are no criteria for assessing them.”

And there lies the problem: They want some some criteria. You and I don’t, because we all know that the criteria will be brutally difficult to the point where Mother Teresa wouldn’t qualify.

Some leftist Representative or Senator is going to write up a cockamamie list of criteria that the Mothers Demanding Attention agree with but which will never pass the House of Representatives. And the Republicans will get blamed for the violence in Chicago.

And now, to top it all off, we have the government acting as a middleman for hundreds of millions of people’s health insurance providers, and acting as the health insurance providers for tens of millions more. You want a permit to own a firearm, you have to get approval from your doctor, who now reports to the government.

Forget about asking the kids if mom and dad have guns in the home. You are just flat out being required to tell them.
