Now, a decision needs to be made

By folks who voted for Obama and love his intrusion into the healthcare marketplace, and also like their 2nd Amendment rights.

The study, published as a research letter in the June 2014 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine, is believed to be the first to examine doctors’ attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors regarding their emerging role in the assessment of competency for the licensing of concealed weapons.

…..

“There are things we can do now to change this,” Dr. Kathy Barnhouse, a professor of family medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and co-author of the study, said in a press release. “We discovered that the great majority of physicians feel that assessments for concealed weapons permits should best be done by providers specifically trained in making such assessments, presumably with standards to make assessments about mental and physical competence.”

Dr. Adam Goldstein, a study co-author and professor in the department of family medicine at UNC, thinks the problem lies with a lack of uniform standards and public policies across states to determine what is dangerous enough to justify denying a permit.

“Doctors are qualified to do this, but they need guidance,” Goldstein said in a telephone interview. “The physician that best knows the patient is the best type of physician to do these assessments. In most cases, that would be the primary care physician. Doctors who have special training, who may not be the primary care physicians, may also be qualified to do it. The type of questions being asked involve physical and mental capacities. The problem is there are no criteria for assessing them.”

And there lies the problem: They want some some criteria. You and I don’t, because we all know that the criteria will be brutally difficult to the point where Mother Teresa wouldn’t qualify.

Some leftist Representative or Senator is going to write up a cockamamie list of criteria that the Mothers Demanding Attention agree with but which will never pass the House of Representatives. And the Republicans will get blamed for the violence in Chicago.

And now, to top it all off, we have the government acting as a middleman for hundreds of millions of people’s health insurance providers, and acting as the health insurance providers for tens of millions more. You want a permit to own a firearm, you have to get approval from your doctor, who now reports to the government.

Forget about asking the kids if mom and dad have guns in the home. You are just flat out being required to tell them.

The physician that best knows the patient

That’s one of the key problems right there. Physicians don’t know their patients at all, especially now. They get about 4 minutes with each patient. That’s barely enough time to skim their record, much less actually know anything about them.

The idea of a doctor claiming they know their patients better than anyone else suggests that he’s not actually ethical enough to continue with his career.

I got yer criteria right here:

    1. Legal permanent resident or citizen of the US and the state where you want a CHL.

    2. No felony convictions.

    3. No domestic violence convictions (for now).

That’ll do it. No need for any further questions or decisions by doctors.

My father was an MD (graduated 1956) and the “doctors” being turned out today can’t compare with the ones of his generation. The GPs can’t diagnose complex problems and the specialists don’t want a referal without a diagnoses. My wife suffered thru GPs and specialists for over a year with out a clue as to what her problem was. One specialist almost refused to see her because the GP hadn’t come up with a diagnoses so she could treat it. She was the department head at a major university hospital. No clue. I finally figured out what was causing her problems and recommended a course of treatment that was concurred with by several doctors. She’d have died if I hadn’t. Stomach acid blocker had also blocked her Intrinsic Factor which blocked B12 which messed up potasium, calcium, and magnesium levels which caused uncontrolled high blood pressure (240 over 140 during one of many emergency room visits). The emergancy doctors just wanted to stabilize and release rather than actually figure out what the problem was. Do I want narcissistic morons like this having say over whether or not I should own guns? HELL no.

I noted on a recent trip to Spain that in order to get a hunting permit or a permit to purchase a hunting weapon you had to have an interview with a doctor, many of which advertise in the news paper or on bill boards in town. Kind of reminded me of the “doctors notes’ you needed to get medical pot up until recently…People I asked about it just shrugged.
